Thanks so much for watching! I haven't stopped thinking about Better Call Saul since I finished watching it-so, of course, I had to compare it to my other favourite prequel! Besides maybe The Godfather Part II, I'm not sure it gets much better than these. But prove me wrong-what are your favourite prequels?

There's also a special edition Banshee created by West Coast Customs for Rockstar back when GTA V was released that very briefly appears in the beginning of the season five episode Bagman. And then, of course, there's the fact that Steven Ogg (Trevor in GTA V) appears in both seasons one and five, so there are actually a few more connections between BCS and Rockstar's games. Quality knows quality.

I remember screaming when the 1st trailer of RDR2 dropped and Dutch showed up at the end lol because despite his short time in RDR1 I could easily see why John followed him and why others continued to. Even when he's dying he still has to have all eyes and ears on him because even in all his lying prothletizing he still says kernel of truths. I think thats the most heartbreaking thing about Dutch, he was right.

What I love about the two cliff scenes in RDR 1 and 2 is how people can interpret them in so many ways. You could see it as Dutch saying the same dialogue in both scenes because this is his last wirds that he’s rehearsed for years. Informing his performative and two-faced nature. In this interpretation, Dutch is never genuine with anyone, even his gang members, because he’s trying to feed his own ego and pride. He wants to die a ‘hero’s death’ and just says what he thinks is the best words for that moment, not because he’s genuinely introspective. You could also see it in the way that you interpretted in the video. He’s calling back to that moment because he’s up against a wall and is maybe regretting the decisions that led to Arthur’s death, the gangs disollution, and the carnage that followed afterwards. I interpret it as an eternal truth that Dutch learned long before either of the games. Dutch probably had ambitions when he was younger (possibly when he first met Hosea) of being a Robin Hood type hero, stealin from the rich and giving to the poor. But because of him facing failure time and time again with his gang, the constant losses of friends along the way, and the further entrapment that he feels within America with its bureacracy and greed and grip on his personhood; he has become nihilistic. I see the story of RDR2 of his final descent into total detachment from the cause he claims to fight for and his regard for the people around him. By the end of RDR2 he doesnt actually believe that he can rally the gang together in one final job to escape America, he just wants to cause noise. He just wants to rage against the society that made him a monster. Nothing else matters. He might tell himself that he’s doing justifiable things but he’s just lying to himself. And I think his character is the epitomy of “if you can lie to yourself, you can lie to anyone.” The thing I love is that any interpretation is valid because he’s such a complicated and well-written character and I love how you explore that in this video. Your work is just top notch man. You make me filled with passion for story telling and art in every video. Cant wait to see more and hope youre doin well. 👊🏻

Well said. My thoughts on it was always that he had said it many a time when his back was against the wall but always half-assing it. Maybe he read it in an Evelyn Miller book. But I think when he says it to John at the end he really comes to understand it. He knows it REALLY is the end now and these words finally make sense to him. This is just based on delivery and an incredible performance, and of course is just my interpretation
@JohnnyFilmsy-Boi
@JohnnyFilmsy-Boi 2 жыл бұрын
@@ChardeeMacDennis96 That makes sense, I like that interpretation. It’s similar to how Jules in Pulp Fiction says the same bible verse when he kills people and it doesnt matter to him, but at a pivotal moment of his life he finally realizes what the verse means and how it reflects his inner conflict.

I think for the two scenes from BB/BCS and Rdr1 and Rdr2 you showed in the beginning, the scenes that take place further in the future show that Gus and Dutch have truly accepted their roles as villains, or perhaps, antagonists in some form, even if Gus isn't really trying to kill Walter during that first scene you showed.

Kinda unrelated but I grew up in the middle of a desert in Colorado. Somehow both of these franchises captures the atmosphere and the vibes perfectly somehow. The American desert ironically being a flat empty place has more soul than most places on earth in my opinion and it's hard to explain why.

Growing up in New Mexico, especially while Breaking Bad was being filmed, was awesome. Yeah, we got a lot of the "so many drugs there" talk, but I was in awe of just how well Vince Gilligan captured the beauty of the desert and showed it off to the world. And it only got better in Better Call Saul. I plan on living in the desert the rest of my life.

On a character to character level, there is so much to consider for the subtly but masterfully implied character development for those lucky characters who get to appear in both games. I am always amazed to consider the following, that only Jack Marston and Edgar Ross appear in all 4 points of time: 1899, 1907, 1911, and 1914, that, together, interstingly, goes from a Frontier Western (Red Dead II) into a Spaghetti Western (Red Dead I,) bizarrely out of order. If you listen to Reverend Swanson's opening monologue in the cabin in chapter 1, where he reads Ezekiel, and interpret Reverend Swanson as our ears into Rockstar's intentions, it becomes easy to understand the verse as Rockstar's explanation as to why the timelines are as they are. Feel free to look up that camp dialogue, the cabin in Colter is so rich with it but most players miss it just hustling the missions.

I think Dutch repeating the same line almost word for word in RDR1 speaks to his insincerity. He knows he's speaking his last words to a man he raised who clearly saw as his father, and all he cares to do is make some big speech reliving a time he felt smart. Nothing personal about the life he's lived, no reflecting on what he did to John, it's all about power and ego for him.

The parallels between these two works have been in my mind for quite some time. And I agree that in their own right they are as close to perfect as they can get. What bums me out is the disconnection that I feel between the original and the prequel in both cases, although I have to say that in the case of BB and BCS they were able to resolve it intelligently through narrative devices such as ellipsis, despite some retcons being damn near unfixable. In the case of RDR1 and RDR2, however, the more I think of them as independent works instead of a continuous narrative, the better. It's not just that John doesn't mention Arthur 12 years later, it's that the whole premise of the first game, John ditching the gang after they left him for dead, it's not fleshed out as carefully as Jimmy's Transition into Saul. I think that RDR2 should have put more of a spotlight in John's disillussion with the gang, while also taking its time to make Arthur find it in him to forgive his friend. That hat transfer at the end would have been so much more powerful if John had been able to say sorry for leaving. Also, Javier in RDR2 is way too likeable (I can't hate on anyone who gets me to love "Cielito Lindo" more than I do), even in the end when he turns, but refuses to point his gun at Arthur and John; he is certainly not the trash human being that John finds in Mexico all those years later. Anyway, in comparison to everything they do right, these are just nit picks, and they don't hinder my enjoyment of these two beautifully crafted universes.

these are 2 completely different pieces of media that I would’ve never thought to compare until I realised they were both prequels. Amazing how they’re so similar yet different once your put them together. Great video.

I can't believe what you've said in this video, it is almost like someone was reading my mind. Every conversation I have about prequels (and I quickly go to the "perfect" prequel topic) I always use these two examples. Honestly to my friends it is not a secret that Better Call Saul is my favourite show and that Breaking Bad is all the way up there aswell. When it comes to games I think that it is also well known that Red Dead Redemption 2 is my favourite game; with BCS and RDR2 this video perfectly explains my vision and passion for these kinds stories. Thank you man! Your content is (to me) next level.

Okay I’ve always thought that Red Dead 2 and BCS were both the perfect examples of prequels done right so I’m glad to see someone else share that sentiment!

Red Dead 2 does and has the amazing thing that many sequels and prequels simply can never replicate from the original, and something completely indescribable. The spark.

It shows that the goal of a good prequel is to focus on keeping the viewers engaged by having them anticipate seeing events they have only ever heard about 2nd hand, even if they did not yet realize it. Red dead redemption commonly made references to past events and even though Breaking Bad didn't doesn't mean that those references couldn't be created retroactively, such as in these two cases in which there was no need to suspect that they held references to past events.

I thought this video was about how to make RDRIII be just as amazing by having Rockstar do for Dutch what Peter and Vince did for Saul, and show both the making of the monster (Dutch learning his trade from a mentor and then forming his own gang after he's left alone) interspersed with the full transformation (you get to play the events leading up to and including RDR1 from Dutch's POV).

Red Dead Redemption 2 losing goty is still one of the craziest things ever. GoW 2018 is an amazing game and one of the best in it's genre. But Red Dead Redemption 2 is THE greatest story game of all time

I would say that the best thing these prequels/sequels does is that they answered to great questions. Something some prequels fails completely to do. - What Mike and Jimmy did before they became criminals / How the Van der Linde gang was - How was Hector Salamanca before he became unable to speak and move/ How was Dutch before he became a lonely and despsperate gang. etc. But the real thing about Dutch speech being in RDR2 is interesting: it implies that Dutch prepared his final speech a long time ago and was always thinking about what he wanted to say before dying.

RDR2 is such a good game man when Arthur dies I literally felt like one of my long time friends passed away. It still makes me feel emotional just thinking about. I cant think of any other piece of media that has made me feel so invested in a fictional world.

I've been put in a serendipitous spot when it came to these IPs. I am years late for the first installments then started with the ones that came later only to find out they're prequels and when I am starting on the mainline installments all the previous references mean more
