A lot of the storytelling in BCS assumes people have watched breaking bad. It’s written with that in mind by design. It would be a very different show with very different stories, structure, and pacing if it was intended to be watched without that knowledge.

BCS has the advantage of working with material from a popular/established "universe". That being said, I still think it's better overall writing and performances. I wish I could recall who I'm thinking of, but I believe there is a reaction channel that is actually watching BCS first. I'm really interested in seeing people's opinions who watch it in that order.

@@axps4964 you wouldn’t would you, as you wouldn’t be aware of what you were missing. The entire series and all the storytelling was written with people already having the knowledge of breaking bad in mind. That’s how it was designed. Of course you can watch it and enjoy it without having watched breaking bad, but that wasn’t the creative intent and a lot is missing without that knowledge. Many examples throughout all 6 seasons, but the fact the ending makes no real sense unless you know about the breaking bad story is the most obvious example.

My wife and I started Breaking Bad long ago. We watched S1, and then didn’t really go back. Eventually I wanted to return and finish it but when I asked she said she thought it wasn’t for her. Too dark and high tension I think. But she is a huge Bob Odenkirk fan, so now we are currently working our way through BCS. I think the combination of Bob Odenkirk and the lighter tone makes it work for her. I’ve had to give her a few bits of backstory (forestory?) but mostly the show stands fairly well on its own.

@@dsscam in her case, it doesn’t matter, because she does not intend to ever watch Breaking Bad, so nothing is spoiled. I’ve already asked her if BCS has changed her mind about not watching BB and she said no. For someone who plans to watch BB, I agree, you gotta do BB first, the other way around spoils a bunch of stuff.

I agree that S1 is indeed quite marvellous. The writing's excellent, as are the other aspects (cinematography, editing, acting). I do admit, however, that when I watched it for the first time I 'only' liked it a lot, I only started to love it upon rewatch. It's quite admirable that you both got it right away.

When I am encouraging friends to watch the show, I often give them the option of watching it in sequential order. And I agree, I do believe that that would be rather cool to watch it that way. Because then you see the whole arc chronologically.

Yeah, but then you miss a lot of high points where you get to be pleasantly surprised by a character you remember as being dead. Also, BCS is paced a lot slower than BB. It can afford to be, since you want to hang in there to see how Jimmy transforms into Saul.

0:56 There are a few pros and a few cons in watching BCS before BB. Pros: -The universe is fleshed out from the start, it immediately feels like a complex network of characters, while in Breaking Bad you could kinda tell that they were making it up as they went along (like starting with Tuco, then introducing his Tìo, then expanding his story creating this complex relationship with Gus, then after Gus is gone they introduce Lydia who was never referenced before...) -You can better appreciate the destructive nature of Walt by basically watching the world of BB being built up in this series and then being completely taken down by him piece by piece. -You don't know in advance the fate of returning characters. Cons: -BCS avoids going through certain characters' motivations and backstory in detail when they were already explained in BB. -Certain surprise cameos will go right over your head if you don't know the character from BB. -The "Gene" part kind of spoils the ending of BB, although that is mostly true for the series' epilogue episodes. Personally I think the pros outweigh the cons. Maybe the best way to watch the series in "chronological order" may be to watch BCS up to episode 6-09, then watch BB, then BCS 6-10 to 6-13, but that raises its own problems.

Like everyone, I'm so pleased you like BCS from the start. Really not an easy thing. I'm a huge fan, but I was taken aback in the first seasons by the pace. But as many probably told you : This show is a masterpiece because, when you watch it for the second time, there's not ONE THING we could cut or throw away, everything is important, plenty of things that will happen are teased... Also, you don't see the main characters in the same light knowing how the show progresses, the writers managed a really great tour de force with that. I shouldn't say it, but a bit like Breaking Bad, the show gets darker and darker each season. Revisting the first season is fun because it's also revisiting its complete light-heartedness (except for a couple of episodes like Mijo with Tuco or Five-O with Mike). I REALLY cannot wait to discover your reactions the more you progress in the show and discover milestone episodes.

Just some random info since you mentioned bingo in the video. If you've never actually gone to a bingo hall, they're kind of fun AND they pay out a lot of money. I used to go with my best friend (she was really into it) about 20 years ago, and at that time they gave away $8,000 in prize money every night (by law). You are actually playing EIGHTEEN bingo cards on one sheet all at one time, and you're not trying to get a straight line. You're trying to make a pattern like "the hat pin", a diamond, or 4 corners, etc. We'd pay $15, and that would get you 8 games. It was fun to people watch for a few hours, hang out and talk with your friends, and win money (we probably won about $4,000 between us). We'd always split the money equally as a group of however many friends were there (2 - 4 people). The prize money law varies by state.

I’ve always said BCS is a slow burn compared to BB - and I know you’ve commented on it at times too. I personally don’t mean it as a bad thing - in ANY way. It’s just a pacing thing. It’s a different story, not as “action packed” … but it TOTALLY serves the story! One small thing - without spoilers, I think the trilogy has to be watched in release order, even though this is a “prequel”. Some later “flash forwards” won’t make sense and could spoil BB if you watch BCS first. (Without details). Love the reactions. Also - congrats on the news!!! ❤🎉🎉

Trial rate is way better than pre-trial rate. HHM woulda loved to go forward. Saul was a witness, so he couldn’t have (properly) taken the case, whether he took it or not. He saw them with the cash. When new attorney takes over, the old attorney must transfer the case file.

I watched Better Call Saul before I watched Breaking Bad. (This comment is spoiler-free, the reply is not) It obviously isn't the intended way to enjoy the two shows. I got whiplash going from the last season of BCS, which was filmed only a couple years ago, to an early 2010s BB, and my experience of Walt's story suffered partially from that. The change in pacing, tone, and style of cinematography sadly wasn't a positive one for me. That being said, I'm glad I watched the shows in this order for the incredibly unique experience it gave me! BCS felt like a puzzle I had to figure out most of the time, being dropped in a world with characters I'd never seen before. I loved that. Obviously, BCS reframes and gives context to much of BB, which enriched my experience with the latter show. And unlike people who watched the shows in the right order, I had no idea what the end trajectory was for any character. (Which makes me want to ask yall, do you think your opinion of current Jimmy is colored by where you know he'll end up?) I've had time to sit with the two shows, and I adore BB now. Both are incredible for so many reasons. I can't wait to hear more of your thoughts as this one progresses!
@TacoCat17

I want to share a couple more thoughts for anyone else, but THIS REPLY WILL HAVE BCS SPOILERS SO DONT LOOK KAILYN AND ERIC - I HATED Mike's death in BB because of how much backstory we got for him in BCS. With only BB, his death is tragic and unfair in a good way, but with BCS it just felt lame. - I LOVED Gus's death in BB because of how much backstory we got for him in BCS. Not knowing Gus's true motivations in BCS was fascinating. I got hints with how much he hated Hector & the episode "Dedicado a Max", but it wasn't until his BB arc that I fully understood. His character might be my favorite across both shows, and I think watching the shows in the order I did is responsible for that! - I wish I hadn't watched the last 4 episodes of BCS before BB. The ideal out-of-order experience (imo) is to hold off on those until you finish the first show. It's the only thing I would've done differently. - Nacho's Season 6 arc and Gus vs. Lalo had me hooked because I didn't know who would make it out alive. - Waltuh

NOT SORT OF - He did it for Kim - not because it was a loser case. He cared more about her career even though it would push her away from having to prove his worth to her. This ending was so important because doing the right thing can hurt us more than we want to admit. He is not angry because he put the money back, he is angry because he cannot buy the office. If he was doing so well why would he be upset about it? ... You two need to remember this is a prequel so this is years before we know Jimmy as the Saul that we know from Breaking Bad, so don't assume you know Jimmy because we knew him as Saul. This show is not going to explain things to you, it's going to show you. and you're suppose to catch these things. And this episode showed you that Jimmy is not doing well and he won't get that office.

I like watching reactions and almost feel you have to let people have their experience.. but its driving me crazy that he thinks he knows Jimmy.. no.. Jimmy is not Saul Goodman from BB.. and sometimes I think he thinks it's BB reboot and Jimmy is Walt.. Walt turned into a greedy scumbag.. Saul Goodman of BB was not a Greedy guy.. scumbag..rule bender and breaker willing to compromise ethics for dollars sure.. but not Greedy that was walt.. THIS IS JIMMY!! Ohh man.. I am like yelling at my TV watching this guy guess wrong 39 times an episode.. sorry Eric.. I dig ya.. I just think you're trying too hard.. relax and watch the show..think of it as a new show but you have been given a few spoilers that give you a idea of what could be coming.. I was with ya 100 percent when you were defending your position on Walter and felt it was wrong for people to try to force you into their opinion.. I don't want to be like those guys.. not trying to rip ya.. I just think you will enjoy it more if you relax and realize BCS is it's own show with BB tie ins.. enjoy the new show and get to know Jimmy instead of assuming he is Saul. Thanks for the reactions hope this wasn't too harsh.
