Most people do not catch the irony of Jimmy flipping out and going into his spiel about doing a background check for the interview when, in the previous season, he immediately wanted to hire Francesca after a 2-minute interview without doing one himself, against Kim's wishes. 🤫

Chuck does care about jimmy. Him telling Jimmy he doesn't care about him was just something Chuck wanted to believe himself. Chuck's line in the sand wasn't jimmy being successful it was "slippin jimmy" being a lawyer. Consider how important the law is to chuck (basically his life) and how many times and for how long Jimmy has been crooked/slipping (stealing money from their dad etc). For someone like jimmy to claim to be an advocate of the law like chuck would be nothing but insane to someone who has known jimmy like he has and loves the law as much as he does. We see his mental illness get worse every time he catches lawyer jimmy slipping. His whole condition stems from and is tied to jimmy. His final conversation with jimmy is what finally does him in. It was an attempt to cut jimmy out of his life but he clearly couldn't really let go. If he really never cared about Jimmy he would have cut ties with him forever ago. Should he have been supportive of jimmy? of course. But after jimmy has been that crooked guy who cheats and lies to get what he wants pretty much chuck's entire life he's never going to see past it completely. I believe he meant it when he said he was proud Jimmy got a regular job and stopped his chicanerious lifestyle working in the mailroom. but hell jimmy even took what would appear to a cum laude university and lawschool grad like chuck as shortcuts with his online schooling and what not.

Honestly, I've always thought Kim's outburst at Howard was her misdirecting her frustrations. I don't think she likes how little Chuck's death seems to be affecting Jimmy, and she goes off on Howard because she wants Jimmy to actually be grieving. She wants to be able to tell Howard he is being inconsiderate of how Jimmy feels because Jimmy should be doing it. But he isn't, and he doesn't seem to care. Also, incredible performance from Rhea Seehorn

Kim is a very interesting character throughout the series. (no spoilers) Jimmy through and through loves Chuck until it involved Kim's career. Also Chuck loved Jimmy in his own way just like he still loved Rebecca. Only 3 things Chuck loved - Jimmy, Rebecca & his version of the Law. All 3 things is about Chuck's love of control but he cannot control himself.

Chuck represents the cold hard law. The law is for the good of the people, it represents justice and is “pure” in its own way; but the law is devoid of emotion. It rules “justly” regardless of personal situations or motives…you break the law, you pay the price. Chuck’s motive (in the present day) is always to uphold and protect the law. He knows that Jimmy is corrupt and as an attorney will corrupt the law. Jimmy has no place in the law. In this way Chuck is right as we see how things turn out with Jimmy/Saul in BB. Don’t get me wrong, Chuck is a cold-hearted, loveless man and corrupt in his own way…and Jimmy is a warm person in HIS own way, but I think in the larger story arch of Saul, Chuck represents the law trying to keep Jimmy out.

9:20 He hates the fact that when he played it straight and tried to do the "right thing".... His future employers wanted a week to think it over and to interview other people and so on. That's pretty much standard practice, most companies interview more than one candidate. But when he gave them the Saul/Slippin Jimmy routine, they were ready to hire him on the spot! They ignored their own process & procedures because they were so enamoured by the Saul/Slippin Jimmy sales pitch. James McGill playing by the rules, isn't as successful as "Saul Goodman" or "Slippin Jimmy" and this is leading to a build up of resentment within Jimmy which is all linked to everything Chuck said about him and to his relationship with his father

Regarding your thoughts post-reaction; there are scenes to come (flashbacks) that will offer further insight into Chuck and Jimmy's relationship-prior to them having that same level of adversity we see between them, in the show's beginnings. They are few and far between, but them in conjunction with the letter, do a good job elucidating their dynamic a little further.

The one thing Jimmy defenders always forget is the Davis and Maine arc, which shows that even when he gets an honest opportunity, he kinda scams the people that gave him that chance. This proves that Jimmy isn't just a product of Chuck's low expectations, but rather that Chuck had a genuine point about who Jimmy is. The brothers were both right about the other's failings.

@jlilley733 күн бұрын
Regarding Jimmy vs Chuck, my POV on Chuck at this point is that I want to take him at his word. Obviously he has a ton of deep-seated resentment of Jimmy for being more popular than him, even with their parents. But he's also aware that Jimmy was a incalictrant petty crook before the mailroom job, and correctly predicted he'd go back to scamming after becoming a lawyer. I don't agree that he was just "out to get him" and just wanted to see Jimmy fail. I think he was just genuinely horrified at the thought of this petty crook becoming a lawyer and just wanted him out of law. He went out of his way to avoid pressing criminal charges on the judge in Jimmy's case; he just wanted Jimmy disbarred. I think if Jimmy had just become a salesman Chuck would have politely let him be.
@jlilley733 күн бұрын
An observation I had recently: In this show we see Jimmy scamming a lot before he takes the mailroom job. And then once he's rejected by HHM he starts scamming again (e.g. the skaters and the Kettlemans, the billboard). But I don't think we ever see him scamming in the time inbetween. Maybe in this case we can take the absence of evidence as evidence of absence, meaning he didn't do anything illegal during that time. And maybe we can take _that_ as evidence that he was genuinely turning over a new leaf during that time, and it was only being rejected by HHM (and subsequent desperation) that pushed him back into scamming. It's hard to say for sure. It would have been nice if the series had shown a little more of Jimmy in that interim period.
@jlilley733 күн бұрын
Kim is obviously biased, and some of those things (the personal letter, the size of the inheritance) are out of Chuck's hands as the estate executor, but I do think Kim had some legitimate gripes against Howard in that argument. It _was_ selfish of Howard to unload his guilt in front of Jimmy, and it was insensitive of him to ask Jimmy to be part of Chuck's scholarship committee (at first I thought it was Chuck's idea to put Jimmy on the committee, but Howard's phrasing suggests its his own idea, and that makes more sense anyways). Howard is mostly a good guy who's gotten caught in the crossfire (which I couldn't see on my first viewing because I was so pro-Kim), but he does have his faults, particularly in his people skills.
@ComedicPause3 күн бұрын
Perhaps Chuck harbored bitterness towards Jimmy, but I think it's a bit unfair to say that everything bad Jimmy did was provoked by Chuck. Chuck was supportive of Jimmy's PD work, and the trouble only started when Chuck saw that Jimmy was conning people again with his billboard scheme, which is a pretty clear sign that Slippin Jimmy is back, he can't be trusted to handle the Law and potentially hurt clients. Chuck was unaware at that point that Jimmy tried to scam Betsy Kettleman with the skaters, and then took a 30k bribe from them. The cycle of destruction in this show started with Jimmy.

I think this also becomes clearer as the show goes on.

To paraphase Groucho Marx, "I would never take a job at a place that would have _me_ as an employee." Jimmy can't respect someone who would fall for his shtick so easily. Plus, not being employed there makes it easier to steal the statuette (the salesmen would investigate their employees first).

A lot of people are angry at Jimmy for telling the insurance company about Chuck's breakdown, but Chuck and Howard were defrauding the insurance company by hiding Chuck's condition. That is why their insurance rates skyrocketed when Jimmy told them. He was a liability that would cost a lot if he lost it and caused the firm to lose an action on a client's behalf and the company had to pay out.
