This movie is basically a deconstruction of a classic film noir mystery. In those movies the main character, who is a private investigator, gets hired and does his level best to solve the case. In this movie, the dude has no interest in solving anything and keeps getting pulled back in by the other characters. They have to go to his house like 5 times to get him to continue to participate in the story, and at the end there are like a half-dozen loose ends that never get resolved. @@BossMovieReactions Raymond Chandler Wrote the novel "The Big Sleep," in 1939. Chandler was a genius with the written word of Detective and Noir. His genius was that as you read you don't actually think you are reading "Just," a detective story.

The deeper message was: no matter what weird circumstance, along with weird characters, the Dude was always nonchalant, always the Dude! Therefore, no story plot could ever stick! Movie has to be watched more than once - maybe even while drinking a couple of white russians!

Just wondering if you replaced some of the music soundtrack for this reaction, or if you watched a version of the movie that had been altered for some reason, as some of the songs in the background are not the songs in the original version. As someone who has seen this many times, it was very jarring to hear the wrong music in the background.

Yeah, unfortunately, I had to change two songs. The YT Copyright bots flagged it and I wasn't allowed to use it... Sorry about that. (:

A Coen Bros classic. This was (very) loosely based on a 40s mystery novel by Raymond Chandler called The Big Sleep, later a movie with Bogie and Bacall. Both book and movie had an intricate plot that was almost incomprehensible, kind of like this. But it certainly wasn't as funny.

Sam Elliot is the “narrator”. Awesome in many movies, best would probably be tombstone. Many have said that his character in this movie is a type of deity watching over people like the dude who just live life and try to not have any problems with anything or anyone. That’s why he asks the dude if he has to curse so much.

Maybe this is the American cinematic version of Monty Python and the Holy Grail, at least in terms of quotability. I would say this and Raising Arizona are the Coen Bros. most quotable. "The royal we" "They got us working in shifts!" "He's a good man, and thorough." "You want a toe? I'll get you a toe by 3 o'clock." "He fixes the cable?" "You're killing your father, Larry." "You're being very un-dude." "I will not abide another toe." "I guess we can close the file on that one!" "I'm a brother Seamus. . . . . Like an Irish monk??" "Over the line!!" "You mean coitus?" "He's a nihilist. . . . . Oh that must be exhausting." "3,000 years of beautiful tradition from Moses to Sandy Koufax" "Careful man, there's a beverage here!"

Have to admit, I didn't really "get" this film when I first saw it. The story seemed to be all over the place, with no real cohesive structure to it. Over the years though, it eventually clicked for me. The story is pretty much irrelevant. It's just a film to be experienced, a chance to spend time with some of the most eccentric characters ever to appear on screen. Once I got my head around that, I quickly fell in love with it!
