To make it even crazier, all of the characters that are Breaking Bad-exclusive are also at their best here (timeline-wise). Walt is a moral school teacher, his family and in-laws are all doing their regular, lawful things, Jesse is still just a kid etc. BCS S1 can, in that sense, be seen as a 1 season build up to the ensuing TEN seasons of exploring everyone's downfalls in the BB/BCS universe.

I haven't finished the video yet, but I had an interesting thought: You could argue that RICO presents a small slice of the "good ending" for Jimmy and Chuck, where they actually work together and have a healthy relationship. I think this is fascinating because the whole show revolves around how Jimmy is trying so hard to be this good lawyer despite being knocked down at every turn, eventually giving up and transforming into who we see in Breaking Bad. By showing us this peak of what Jimmy can be so early on in the show, I think it helps the audience sympathize with him more and really exacerbates the tragedy of his downfall.
@fipse3 ай бұрын
It was definitely one of those moment that could have changed the direction Jimmy was going. Only for Chuck to ruin it. Not that Jimmy is innocent, he had plenty of such moments that he ruined himself.

I really loved Rich. He's a really interesting background character who's incredibly well fleshed out in his short screen time (a testament to Vince Gilligan's talent). He's incredibly underdiscussed in the fandom, he's got so many douchy qualities, yet is also a really decent and empathetic dude. His conversation with Kim about being left hanging in his first job is, to me, such a vivid example of good writing. Its adding complexity to a character, builds context of the world of lawyers we sit on the edge of and peer into on the show, it drives the plot, it alters Kim's perspectives and motivations and all the while it feels really real. Utterly incredible. 10/10, I love this show
@Justin_Leone2 ай бұрын
It's more a testament to Peter Gould than Vince Gilligan. After the show got off the ground, Gilligan wasn't really involved creatively, apart from directing a handful of episodes. Peter Gould was the showrunner, the role that Gilligan had in Breaking Bad.

BCS is probably the last show I'll ever be so invested in and make sure I'm there to watch it live. I was into breaking bad during the first season so this world and it's characters were with me for nearly 15 years of my life. Jimmy and Chucks scenes together are some of the most tense and suspenseful I've ever seen especially with themselves often just being two people talking. No need for giant battles and dragons, give me hurt people trying to deal with their trauma and emotions badly.
@Stevie57223 ай бұрын
One element I really only appreciated on a rewatch was that every scene in Chuck's house uses darkness as the dominating visual element, even when all the lights are turned on. The characters are surprised to see the house lit up, but the audience still only sees the darkness.

Really interesting pick (and cool that you're covering other shows! I love BCS). As much as it's nice to look back on one of the very few moments that Jimmy & Chuck worked as a unit, I find Chuck to be way better as an open antagonist. That's probably why I think S1 is the weakest of the show. I think the best episode of the show is probably Fun & Games- Every character's story is wrapped up in such a painful but cathartic way, with the breakup scene being the emotional climax of the story. Mike & Gus, who can often feel like an awkward inclusion next to Jimmy's incredible arc, also get really resonant endpoints- Mike's empty appeal to revenge as a balm for Manuel's grief is an excellent mirror for how his story began with killing the corrupt cops, and the scene where Gus almost allows himself to be intimate is the best character beat for him in either show. iIalso love the close on brba era Saul, quoting Chuck from 3x05- "Let justice be done, though the heavens fall." Just stomach turning. Runner ups for Winner (4x10), Bad Choice Road (5x09), and Waterworks (6x12).

Mike’s my favorite character in BCS and in my top five in the whole BB/BCS universe.

I hold that Chuck's condition is his subconscious wrestling with a dilemma: Chuck loves practicing the law and even considers it "sacred", but by sabotaging Jimmy's career he has violated ethics and thus is no longer worthy of his sacred calling. His condition is how his subconscious resolves the matter, by forcing him to quit practicing law. But it's lifting now that he's actually helping Jimmy and no longer being the unethical person who sabotages Jimmy. AT LEAST, that's my take on it.

YES! I agree!! Both this and “Peekaboo” (S2, Breaking Bad) are in my books as the most underrated episodes in each respective show. It is where we fully see what the main characters are made of and where their initial moral compasses point. “Rico” was the first episode of BCS where I could start to really root and feel for Jimmy. I got invested in his story, because it is the first episode where we see how much heart he really had and what a great person he could become if he stays on the straight and narrow. It is also the first episode where I started to realise the tragedy of BCS, because we know he will lose that part of him. I liked the show beforehand already, but this episode made me sit up and really empathise with the characters

Great video! I've always loved this episode as well! It's a perfect encapsulation of what could have been in this universe, and that contrast underscores why everything else that happens afterwards is so tragic. Knowing what ultimately happens, this is also one of the absolute best episodes to rewatch since that contrast is always starring you right in the face.
