All of you who defend jimmy : it says a lot about your values. Jimmy has always been a crooked and dishonest man. We later know in breaking bad that not only is he a crooked liar, but also a criminal. Chuck was totally right, Jimmy soiled the lawyers job. How can you defend a criminal against an honest man ? That’s why Vince Gilligan’s tv series are the best, they reveal the true nature in dishonest people. The same thinking goes to Walter White’s character in breaking bad. A criminal who killed many innocent people but was hugely defended.

I like how it mirrored the first scene with Chuck in the pilot episode of the show, with it being at nighttime and almost completely dark. Yet, the lantern is kind of seen as Chuck's only real place of comfort, since he was shut off from next to everything else in the world. And that, in the end, was what killed him. Excellent writing.

I don't believe it's suicide / willful. It seems a lot more like he is in an induced catatonic or psychotic state from being driven crazy by his OCD. He spent countless hours trying to track down the supposed source of the electricity in his house and never found it. I think people just jump onto the "it was suicide" explanation, because to regular people that might put a reason behind the otherwise meaningless death and actions shown in the scene. The truth, however, is that mental illness is not rational and people do completely irrational and incomprehensible things when in such a broken state.

Chuck is a sad, bitter cautionary tale about the dangers of holding on to your hatred to the very end. The saddest part? I think back to that one scene that happens before the reveal that Chuck has been sabotaging Jimmy's entire career from the start. Chuck and Jimmy are genuinely working together on the Sand Piper case and Chuck is . . . . enjoying . . . being a legal dynamic duo with his brother. Both their strength's come together to put a dent in Sand Piper's armor. And there's this moment where Chuck steps outside to grab something . . .and he completely forgets about his allergy to electricity. It's like he never had it at all, just for a moment. I think about this moment a lot because it alludes to what's really going on. Chuck's hatred for his younger brother has manifest physically. The more his feelings for his brother burn the more they overwhelm him. Only he's in denial of his hatred for his brother, and so he blames his sudden pain on an outside force. He genuinely starts believing electromagnetic waves are harming him and because of the placebo effect keeping electricity out and keeping on space blankets and that makes the pain dampen a bit. This moment of relief where Chuck has so little pain that he completely forgets about his illness coinciding with a moment where he genuinely bonds with his brother is no coincidence. The cure to his electromagnetic sensitivity was always to forgive and embrace Jimmy. But of course . . . Chuck could never do that. I think about the court room scene in the "chicanery" episode. At first, Chuck claims that the exit signs don't bother him because they're far away and not drawing much current. But then Jimmy gets under his skin again and suddenly those exit signs are a nuisance. Just another example of how Chuck blames his physically manifested hatred on an outside force. And then Chuck pushed Jimmy away with one final jab to his heartstrings, thinking it would put an end to his problems forever . . . . but instead he relapses. He relapses *hard*. And this time, no amount of mitigating electromagnetic waves can help him. No matter how much electricity he removes, he can' stop the pain. Because he can't let go of his hatred, the only way he can stop the pain is by killing himself. Because he would sooner die than forgive his brother. Forgive those who make you feel bad. let go of your hatred. let the past be in the past. Don't let your hatred consume you the way Chuck's consumed his. Your pride is not worth it.

something about the shots of all the walls completely torn up is so deeply unsettling. the house in this episode is like a manifestation of chuck's mind - completely normal and functional one minute, then suddenly, everything is out of control, dark and hollowed out, broken beyond repair. and the gas lamp, something that once helped him navigate through the literal and proverbial darkness, now becomes the opposite - an instrument of his death. just as his pathological obsession with "protecting" himself has ultimately destroyed him.

There is something more haunting about wanting to die when you can see you have the best outcome but refuse to in order to hold on to some stupid bitter part of yourself. To all those who feel like they need hatred to guide them or if they think their anger will solve all problems. It won't you just end up hurting yourself double the amount.

This episode captures what it's like to live in isolation with a condition. You have full reign over your own castle, you can do whatever you want. And then you do it. And you'll keep doing it, but after a while it no longer feels satisfying. Suddenly this castle slowly becomes a cage. You realize you have no one to talk to because you've either pushed them away or they're out living their own lives without you. The isolation begins to drive you mad, especially when you feel you can't escape your home because you either have nothing to do or that condition binds you there. You struggle to find a change to something, find a solution to what went wrong, but you can't. Not without destroying your kingdom, whether it be the castle, or it's monarch.

Because whenever Jimmy was down, or whenever Chuck got the opportunity to make Jimmy's life worse, his "condition" suddenly got better.

The first three seasons he spent laughing at Chuck's struggles with his mental illness, finding it funny how hard something of no consequence was for him. It made me afraid to tell him. We watched this episode today. For the first time, he was entirely quiet throughout Chuck's psychosis. I think it finally settled in how serious it all was. I'm hoping this understanding might make it easier for him to understand my own psychosis rather than finding it as a joke.

Chuck was by far my favorite character, not because I liked the guy or agreed with him, but because of how well written him and his mental illness are, I felt like I was watching my own relative. He's the saddest a piece of fiction has made me feel, because of how authentic his struggle felt. It would've been easy and satisfying to have him just let go, redeem himself and just embrace jimmy, but this is who he is. The way Walter's character can sometimes appeal to the male power fantasy of "becoming the man", Chuck's character is the exact opposite, a great representation of a man's tragic inability to enact change from within.

That’s the peril of pride and ego. That’s why a character of Chuck and Walter are such a great dichotomy. Both of them are prideful narcissists. Both have their “I watched Jane die” moment (Chuck telling Jimmy never mattered to him) but unlike Chuck, Walter learned to let go of his pride and tried to make things right by saving Skyler and Jesse. Chuck didn’t get past that.

Chuck's only mental illness was Jimmy's success. He only became mentally ill when he could no longer see Jimmy as inferior. When he tried to prove Jimmy's involvement in the falsification of the documents, he went so far as to visit the printer store and even set up a recorder just to bring him down. When Chuck thought he finally got the better of Jimmy by blocking him from practicing for a year, he went outside to confront him even though he claimed the sunlight was too much for him to bear. He lost his partnership with HHM as well as his credibility, and thus became truly inferior to Jimmy. Unlike Jimmy who only had to wait 1 year before he could practise again, Chuck could never practise again no matter what. That's why his mental illness finally reached such a critical level that he tore down his house, and burnt it down with himself in it. He brought this ending on himself.

A character death like no other. Since the Mesa Verde screw up and bar hearing I was honestly predicting that he would kill himself and almost thought he was gonna hang himself in the scene of him getting up on the chair before he hung up the Mylar. But just when you think he’s getting better he gets worse and just out of nowhere they cut to this scene without any context. Just a few shots of the destroyed house, the room, and chuck and the only sound being him kicking the table and even that isn’t obvious what he’s doing up until the last seconds. Absolutely. Fucking. Brilliant.

I've watched the show and the episode SO many times now yet I notice more every time. I noticed how all those books and newspapers and all were stacked so CLOSE to him and the desk as if to give the fire fuel to burn FASTER! I also believe he took a LOT of pills to be so out of it he COULDN'T do anything about escaping it. SO many things in that whole scene that scream out THIS IS IT! yeah chills run down my spine thinking about it and how DEEPLY sick the man really was. I think IF this was a real life type situation the man had dementia and had tried to control it so long but started realizing it was controlling HIM "if this is all in my head then what have I done?" the thing he said to the Dr at his house. Michael did a SUPERB job in so many scenes... he MAKES you feel it and think about it. I have experienced a loved one going through dementia and she hid the symptoms for so long, no one actually knew it was happening. She even let out hints once in a while but most of us didn't think of dementia. She was in LITERAL HELL in her mind! I think dementia and alzheimer's diseases have GOT TO BE THE WORST things to have and die from. Believe me, it is so horrible... especially if/when the person (hopefully NOT) ever realizes it is happening! My Grandma didn't really seem to be aware of what was happening to her with her alheimer's disease except mom told me one day Grandma started crying and said something about it and then she just sort of drifted back to the blank or agitated look she normally had. My mom is the one who had the dementia and believe me it WAS HELL for her all the way! She fought it for as long as she could.. beyond what any of us (her children) thought she would! Either way, it JUST occurred to me today when I watched the scene again.. CHUCK KNEW FOR SURE HE WAS MENTALLY ILL and it just took him!

More like a self-righteous person on a high-horse thinking he is totally honest and noble himself when in reality it's clear he drives a ruthless line with clients and the ones that are accused. Look what he did to Kim, just used all her hard work to take credit for it and then even had her relegated for being friends with Jimmy. He was willing to ruin anybody's life to win or to punish Jimmy. Look at how he treated his last clients - told them to leave if they didn't want things his way and then was all smug knowing they'd "come back and offer him more". I'd say he is part to blame why Jimmy turned out the way he did. It's clear their dad was no role model to either of them but it's also clear that Chuck failed to be a role model to Jimmy as his older brother. He could have believed in him and supported him but he constantly berated him. Had he been honest he could have told Jimmy "I apologize for not being a better support to you when you grew up, I'm partly to blame why you turned out the way you did." So Jimmy found his own "role models" and begun his life of scams and frauds. In the end when he reformed himself and *wanted* to become like his brother Chuck by finishing a degree in law Chuck still berated him and showed no faith in him. Him just showing some support and faith in Jim could have made all the difference. Chuck believed he was "always right". He didn't allow himself to show ANY weaknesses. This is how his relationship with Rebecca (and who knows how many others) fell apart. In the end he tried to sue Hamlin, Hamlin & McGill and lost all his friends there too and Jimmy had nothing to do with that. Jimmy always helped his friends and isn't selfish. He helped Kim and he was the only one who selflessly helped Chuck get his goods every day. Jimmy admits he has done wrong on many occasions and regrets it. Chuck on the other hands never admits he is at fault or that his actions are purely selfish. He uses the law for his own personal advantage and doesn't understand compromise. Chuck was resigned (pretty much fired) from HHM when Howard had enough of him and his antics. Jimmy had nothing to do with what went on at HHM so it was Chuck's own fault always thinking he was right and couldn't do wrong. Chuck didn't just show Jimmy disrespect - though Jimmy got it worst - he treated Kim, Rebecca, Howard, his coworkers, everybody as mere means to an end. In the end only Jimmy still cared for him and he cut his ties with him too. And it's fair to say he's a control freak too. He couldn't control Jimmy this is what scared him. In the end he couldn't control anything anymore not even the electricity in his own home he went on a witch hunt after. Envy? Please. This is bigger than just his relationship with present day Jimmy. Chuck was cold and ruthless - just an expert using the law to his advantage. My guess is he was appalled by how soft and naive his and Jimmy's father was he developed a ruthless personality with himself as a set absolute - which is why he could never be wrong. I felt sorry for Chuck because he was his own biggest enemy. His ruthless principles dictated his life not feelings or compromise. He loved the law more than Jimmy as he told him Jimmy would be like a chimp with a machine gun if he worked at HHM and that would ruin the law. "His law."

This was such a disturbing and deeply haunting scene, that bitter, empty and dead look in his eyes and the persistent yet maddening rhytm of the pouncing, the lighting, the realism, the signs of madness everywhere contrasted by his previous appearance when Jimmy last visited him. The pouncing reminded me of cadaveric spasms as well, almost suggestive of him being ’dead’ prior to the fact. Such a deeply complex, cruel and tormented character. What made this even more disturbing and dark even is what a stark contrast this specific scene was to the rest of the show, i couldn’t even look at the character’s face too long, made me so uncomfortable. The symbolism of chuck and jimmy aligning together is beautiful. Chuck told jimmy that “in the end everyone will hate you” and no matter what he does to change, people will still hate him. This could put back on chuck too. No matter what chuck does no matter who helps chuck with his mind to change his condition. In the end he was alone and hated by everyone he pushed away. Sat with his broken stressed out mental state. And died because of it. Now I may be getting that wrong but that’s what I’ve gotten out of this scene. Amazing writing.

Ironic that in the end (Jail) everyone love the "Better Call Saul" guy. Vince really love this type of shit lmao. Jimmy very reliable in dealing with Elders, and went to the jail because of Carol. When it comes down to it Chuck should have come down from his high horse - he was no better than Jimmy is. Chuck just knew how to do it legally but is the quintessential "money comes first" lawyer willing to be really strict and harsh on the accused part. One could argue his "principles" and him "always being right" was what doomed all his relationships. At least Jimmy cares for his near and dear and puts the past behind him. Chuck clearly cut the last "friends" he had at Hamlin, Hamlin & McGill. In the end Jimmy still cared for him but he was cut out too. His insane quest for "control" lead him to chop down walls trying to find where all the power went.

IMO all that was needed was for Chuck to support Jimmy in his lawyer career. The guy literally changed his entire life and worked as a public defender or whatever it's called. Helping people in a shitty position in a biased and imperfect justice system for peanuts. If Chuck wasn't a piece of shit he would have fostered the goodness in Jimmy.

@rtozier2011
@rtozier2011 3 жыл бұрын
Exactly. I think Chuck's condition stemmed from him subconsciously recognising that the law isn't sacred, due to Jimmy becoming a lawyer, and so he could no longer believe his life's work made him better than his brother. So he couldn't practice law any more but he couldn't bring himself to admit he wasn't better than Jimmy, so his mind came up with the condition as an excuse to himself for no longer lawyering.

You know what makes this series so great? The reflections and the message. Chuck was literally rich after Howard accepted to pay the 8 million dollar part of the firm. At the end he became successful in life isn’t he? Compared to Jimmy who never had a plain economic entrance, Chuck had literally everything. Nevertheless, here’s the prove that even with all the money in the world, Chuck couldn’t stand it. He lost his wife, couldn’t really spend the money on anything and most importantly, he died alone.

After watching Breaking Bad and now seeing this you really do learn the layers of the characters more in the show. Chuck has always resented his brother for Jimmy being the favorite, in Chucks eyes Jimmy got everything handed to him, while Chuck worked his ass off and his family didn’t even care about him. And that’s because Jimmy stuck around through the thick and thin while Chuck was building his company. Even though Jimmy has done horrible things, he still has a good heart. Which is exactly why his cared more about Jimmy than Chuck. It’s depressing, but that’s what led to the events of this show
