Lalo visits Howard Hamlin at Kim and Jimmy's apartment.
Season 6 Episode 7 Plan And Execution: On the day of the Sandpiper settlement conference, Jimmy and Kim hastily reshoot their photos with the actor impersonating Casimiro, then pass them to Howard's private investigator, who is actually working for them. Howard ingests Caldera's drug upon contact with the photos and embarrasses himself at the conference by appearing manic and accusing Casimiro of accepting a bribe. Howard and Cliff are forced to settle the Sandpiper case for less than they wanted. Lalo surveils Gus' laundry, realizing he has built a hidden meth lab there. Calling Hector, he tells him he will attack Gus that night after realizing Gus' men monitored his call. Mike alerts Gus and redirects his security teams to protect Gus, leaving Kim and Jimmy's apartment unprotected. Howard deduces that Jimmy and Kim plotted his character assassination and confronts them at their apartment. Lalo arrives soon afterward, intending to "talk" to Jimmy and Kim. Kim urges Howard to leave, but Lalo kills him with a gunshot to his head.

In some twisted way, Howard did get revenge for Jimmy shattering his reputation. It wasn't the way he envisioned it, but his death did lead to Kim leaving Jimmy, which wound up torturing Jimmy mentally for years and years until he even preferred jail over being a free man.

His not hiring Jimmy as a lawyer was not Howard's choice, it was Chuck's. Howard took the blame for it to protect the relationship between Chuck and Jimmy. All through the series Howard was proven to be the better person and repeatedly tried to help others. He was made to look like an antagonist early as some silver spoon spoiled brat but we see something very different over time.

Howard's death is the most tragic in the entire saga. I love how he's made to be the villain at the start of BCS but you eventually realize that he was the most genuine and selfless character in the whole show. Weak enough to be manipulated by his mentor, Chuck, but strong enough to see the potential in Jimmy and Kim. Paid Chuck out of his own pocket so his employees could be paid. Smart enough to see through Jimmy's entire scheme but always 5 seconds behind foiling it. Even in his last seconds, I feel like he was worried for Kim and Jimmy, didn't expect any harm to come to himself but feared for their safety. Then during his memorial, the scene where Kim gaslights Howard's wife into believing the drug use. That's the most awkward and cold hearted moment out of both shows imo

What’s even more tragic is that apparently the full line on the script that Howard would’ve said was, "there’s really no need to hurt them." At the end of the day he betrayed the Salamancas and this is his revenge on the chicken man. It just seems weird to me. Even with plot armour they could have done it better. this scene hit like no other. it was the first major crossover between the two worlds displayed in this show (cartel world and lawyer world) and this scene reminded you that the show youre watching is the same universe as breaking bad, which we often would forget through the shows more mundane moments like the early lawyer-focused episodes. this scene was like a wake up call like "yep, this is real..." I LOVE how the introduced Lalo into this scene, with the candle flicker that Jimmy notices, which is a classic detail that death is coming and is near. Something that perfectly shows just how unbelievably dangerous Lalo is, that he's essentially death itself in the show. And even after his death, the effect he would have on Guss would be what helped to kill Guss in the end.

Yes, Lalo is evil, in the background of darkness, hiding, part of the criminal underworld. Howard is honest and forefront, forward, standing in the light. Honest with Lalo even, "Find better lawyers", confronting. Nice spot. Love this kind of stuff. Even at the end he was trying to negotiate with Lalo but didnt think he'd get shot like that. Lalo on the other hand.. Evil, simple, but evil. It's ironic but expected he died later on. You reap what you sow, Lalo, lol. Howard was going to go the long road, Lalo took the cheap and fast road and it got him killed still.

This might be the most powerful death in TV. Because Howard was without a doubt one of the few characters in Better Call Saul who was genuinely a good dude. He didn’t deserve this fate.

It worked so well because we went on the entire journey of hating the guy to liking him for all the flaws he had, and realising that he was really the good guy in the series. If he was portrayed as good from the very start the death wouldn't have been as effective. It's why his death was a lot more of a shock than Hank's

"I think I'm in the middle of something" is such a fitting line for Howard before his death since that's pretty much where his character was positioned in the majority of the rivalries in the show

I just finished the show for the first time yesterday. Watched this episode and needed a considerable amount of time afterward. Everything was perfectly executed, loved every second of this and the reveal of Lalo with Jimmy and Kim reacting alongside the audience is something that will continue to give me chills every watch. Truly astounding work.
