@@cornholecollective7116 I was looking for a detailed video on painting boards AND applying a poly finish which most people seem to skip. Whats the deal with a wet sand and how is it better than the dry sand?
@cornholecollective71163 жыл бұрын
So, wet sanding seems to me to give a much more consistently smooth finish. Also, it seems less likely to damage the edges. After the initial heavy coats fully dry for a day or so, spray water and orbital sand with 320 grit. Wipe, allow it to dry, apply final coat or two. Turns out really nice and streak free.

I think you’re applying decals to a stained board, that’s totally fine. If you’re applying stencils as a mask to paint designs over a stained background, it’s best to poly first to protect the stained area. The mask can pull up some of the stained wood fibers when you remove it. Hope this helps!

Love these. Question about the friction blocks to keep the boards together. My support board is just off enough that the two boards don't match perfectly for the friction blocks the way you describe. Rather than fitting the blocks tightly on either side of the brace, would placing them further apart still achieve the same effect of clamping the boards together? I imagine the boards could slide a bit length-wide but they'd probably hold together for the most part. Not ideal but do you foresee a big issue? Thanks so much for all your videos.

Cloudy usually meant 1 of two things, water was added to the clear coat which changes the finish and makes it foggy, or 2, additional coats were applied before the previous dried enough. The only thing I can suggest is to carefully sand it smooth and try thin coats of fresh clear.

Came across your video again trying to perfect my finishes. I like your method and I do the same except I wasn’t spraying or sanding (very little by hand if any) as much as you. I was using a coat of wood wax to get the bags to slide. Is that ok or is your method better to get a smooth and slick finish ?
@cornholecollective71162 жыл бұрын
I would be careful with wood wax. While it feels amazing, it can come off on the bags and continue reapplying it’s self to those boards or others if used in other boards. In my experience sunny conditions caused bags to slide back off the boards if they don’t go into the hole.

@cornholecollective71162 жыл бұрын
Never leave them outside. If they do get wet, wipe them down soon after. Outdoor poly will yellow a lot and harden to the point the boards are too slick. If you don’t want a predictable slide, give it a shot but I like to keep boards in the garage and they last a very long time.

How long do you typically cure the stain before you apply the poly coat? Summer vs winter months.
@cornholecollective71163 жыл бұрын
Well, I live in a hot dry oven so usually a day is good. If you’re in a rush, you can give the stain a couple hours to dry then aerosol spray it to lock the stain so it doesn’t smear, then liquid poly it. Depends on your plywood. Crap plywood can bubble if you liquid poly too soon.

If I wanted to paint my boards (vs stain), what type of paint do you recommend? Latex (indoor or outdoor), oil-based, acrylic? What top-coat should be applied to the painted surface?
@cornholecollective71163 жыл бұрын
Hey Michael! Thanks for watching! Latex and acrylic have very different looks and application methods. In my opinion acrylic stencils Much easier and flatter. It’s cheaper and you can blend colors. However, it doesn’t cover as well as latex. If you’re painting large solid color sections, latex might be better. For decorative paint, acrylic is better.

Is it possible to use a glass enamel paint and get a slick? Enough surface, or can you go over the gloss? Enamel paint with polyuresin the enamel paint is an oil base
@cornholecollective7116 Жыл бұрын
This is a tricky one because you’ll want to seal the board with poly and poly doesn’t adhere to glossy paint well. It might appear to hut in no time the layers over the glossy area will peel up and look terrible. The glossy paint doesn’t make a lot of sense considering the whole board will have to have the same sheen for the bags to slide right. Milky areas can be caused by a couple things, it would be hard to diagnose without seeing, are you in the collective? We could have a post with photos and more heads on the issue. Sometimes parks is used and filled back up with water, returned and put back on the shelf. This can cause a white haze. I’f you’re able to wipe with a damp rag and haze disappears (only to return when it dries) you need new poly. Do a coat from this Jew jug Sometimes the poly dries on the outside encapsulating some wet poly that is milky and to solve that, the boards should just need time in the sun Those a are two of the more common milky issues with poly that ive seen. Good luck, it’s certainly frustrating

If your gel stains have been sitting for a day or more and it’s dry where you live, you shouldn’t need to spray before liquid water-based poly. Hi Luke, thanks! It’s a great hobby. i don’t think my computer, brain, or vinyl cutter could handle one stencil with all the design components. I did the foreground first? Then the state shape, them the “background” treeline last. Kind of like if you want to draw something with dimension, you start with the foreground.

It looks good but I think it might be a weak point. Some chunky kid stands on the board while they’re set up, all the pressure goes on the top corner joints. That’s the main reason I add the small blocks inside the top corner. You could still do that to beef them up.

Loved the complete set of videos. I've made maybe about a dozen set of boards to date, but this is the first set I built following your instructions. I used birch tops as you suggested. My design will have a large car decal on each with a painted border around the boards and painted stripes from the sides up to the hole. I sanded the tops with 320 grit sandpaper. I applied the tape and painted. I still have to apply some pinstriping over the painted surfaces. My issue now is some of the surface is rough after being painted. I'm worried the pinstriping will bleed because the painted surface is a bit rough in some areas. I can work around that as I can touch up the painted surface if it bleeds. Once I apply a few coats of the poly, will the sanding take down the rough areas that developed after painting or should I sand the painted surfaces first and recoat if necessary before applying the poly? Thank you!
@cornholecollective71164 жыл бұрын
Hey Dave! Thanks so much. I don't paint often but when I do, I usually use acrylic paint, it lays much flatter is is much thinner so you can often apply it like a stain and see the wood grain. Given your situation, I'd poly first then when dry, sand that smooth with 320 grit paper. It should knock down the fibers and paint edges without risking the paint itself. THen apply decal, then apply a couple final coats of poly. Hope that helps.
@dave70644 жыл бұрын
@@cornholecollective7116 Thanks for the quick response. Just to be sure, you are suggesting two coats of the poly (I'm using the Pro Parks you suggested) and then sand. Then add the decals on top of the poly? Then two more coats of poly?

Awesome work! Do you ever stain and paint a board? I'm making my first set and want to paint part of it and stain other parts. Oil based stain has more options than water so that's what I got. The paint is water based though. Should I stain the whole thing and then paint over or should I try to match lines of paint to the lines of stain? Probably really difficult. Would that be a problem? The oil and water issue? Hope this makes sense
@cornholecollective71164 жыл бұрын
Makes perfect sense Caleb! I use paint and stain all the time. It really all depends on your background color. If for example, you’re staining the entire background, do that first. Paint over it with latex paint. When I do paint, it’s usually minimal accents so I’ll apply the stains and paints to bare wood. If you’re on Facebook, join our new group and share pics of your design, that’ll help us help you! Cheers! facebook.com/groups/726210184885336/?ref=share

Do you poly the frames or just the deck?
@cornholecollective71163 жыл бұрын
We poly all outside surfaces (including outside of frames). Poly is really only for game play purposes and the occasionally spilled beer, so poly on the underside will provide no protection from a rain storm. I equate the care and finishing of cornhole boards to that of a coffee table. Hope that helps

I'll put this out to the Collective for answers. Sorry James, I don't have experience with decals or wraps that remain on the board. I'm sure that if you put several coats of clear on there, you can lightly sand it so it's super smooth and it wouldn't hit the wrap.

I wouldn’t suggest sending between every coat. After you have three or four coats down and it fully dries, sanding is important. Knocks all the ridges down and smooths it all out. Final coat or two and you’re done.
