This is a great time of deer to work on your hunting property to help improve the likelihood of seeing deer next season where you hunt. There's a lot of techniques to do this: food plots, timber stand improvement, prescribed fire, etc. A bit of planning now and you'll be much more likely to put some venison in your freezer next fall and antlers on your wall.
Dr. Grant Woods developed a plan for Jason In Arkansas who had a 120 acres that was previously used as a cattle farm, mixed pastures and woodlots. Grant looks at the features of the property and advises Jason on his next steps for better hunting on this farm: identifying/creating deer travel corridors,where to create bottlenecks, bedding areas, sanctuaries, property screens, how to establish native grasses, where to use prescribed fire. With this plan, this hunter will have many more hunt-able areas - destination areas that will give him many, many options to place a hunting stand or blind. After this plan goes into effect he will have more than 4 miles of edge for deer to travel. #deerhunting #TeamOutdoors

That sure does seem like a lot of bang for your buck with that plan! It kind of makes me change my mind as I look at future land and the potential they could have. I really haven't considered farms that are mostly pasture like this. I have a small property now but development all around is making me consider selling and finding another property. I wasn't looking at farms like this, but I will be now! Thanks for sharing more knowledge with us!

Each property and neighborhood are unique. Many folks seem to forget that the neighborhood is a huge factor due to deer home range size. We all share deer!

Ali - A closed-canopy forest captures the sun's energy (photosynthesis activity) well out of reach of deer. To produce deer food and cover, the sun's energy needs to be used from ground level to about 3' high. This is why prairie's are so productive for ungulates!

Good video as always. Not sure if OnX allows a landowner to view your drawings without logging in your account but you can share maps and other information using The Hunter Sight which allows for both parties to log on from each account to share information(records) and one map. Loved the information, for the bedding area in the north pasture land, would you plant anything like sorghum or something taller or is native grasses and switchgrass tall enough for security?
@GrowingDeerTV
@GrowingDeerTV 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the info! Native grasses is tall enough for deer. I use a blend of sorghums from GreenCoverSeed.com to create taller screens to block views from roads, neighbors on utility easements, etc.
