In this episode of Better Gear, the show about making Bad Gear better, we are going to turn a humble Roland TR-505 into a techno monster. How? Can it punch above its weight?

If anyone wants to grab one for less, get one with the darkened screen and peel off the reflective backing, replace with aluminum tape or white printer paper, pretty much as good as new then. Individual outs are also really easy on these.

This channel just gets better and better...I come from a folk/Americana/acoustic production background and have been getting into synths etc in recently months, navigating the good and the bad is a challenge with such conflicting opinions! You have made the journey that much more fun and informative! Your work is absolutely outstanding and I truly look forward to all your work moving forward! I myself have gone down a ‘Teenage Engineering’ rabbit hole, but I found an Akai S3000XL in my studio Attic, the infamous Alesis Comp that you talk about and some other bits, so I look forward to exploring the world of good/bad/questionable gear...! Not sure why a lot of people dislike the 505. I love the 707, so when I found out I could get the same exact sounds for half the price I jumped on it. If you amplify the signal, the original 505 drums sound very alive and very punchy. Not a big fan of the 909 mod, but that's probably just because the hats, ride, and cymbal are harsh and are not able to be edited in any way.

It always surprised me how close 505 and 707 are
@danielm5838
@danielm5838 3 жыл бұрын
@@AudioPilz yeah, seems like they were trying to get an edge in the pcm sample drum market by rebranding the 707, and making it into a smaller, cheaper unit. For the time, neither were *really* bad at realistic drums if you put reverb on it, and mixed it appropriately. But it no doubt left a bad taste in people's mouths who were looking for more real sounding drums.

Pretty much any old drum box can be re-ROM'd. Just takes a little elbow grease. The converters aren't the culprit for the cymbals, it's the sampling rate. Try running 'em thru a brickwall filter first.

Can I be silly? I've been making music for over 20 years, I've never really thought the 909 was all that. It had a very raw sound that, while alright in isolation, was usually hard to mix without loads of EQ and compression. By comparison, the 707/505 and even the Linn/DMX/EMU units had kicks that cut through the mix and didn't require a ridiculous amount of post processing. Fun fact: a lot of house music that had 909 kicks sounded kinda the same. It wasn't until producers got clever with layering and effects that the sounds became more 'usable'. Having said that, the 909 snare is still a fat bastard.

@@AudioPilz Individual outputs will defenitely be challenging as you will have to replace the single built-in amp with 10 external ones. Pitch should be easy though, just start poking at resistors with your finger until you find one that changes the pitch (clock resistors are super sensitive and will respond even if you touch them with your hand)

yea that's silly.. they are kinda rare and some people try to ask those prices but you'll see they go for less. you don't need the drive either if you have sample wrench for windows (or amiga!) it can do sysex dumps.. it's a special format though, not standard SDS. So yea maybe not something you'll impulse buy, but just worth keeping an eye out for.. i think the mod alone costs like $200.. some gear is impractical.. like omg if i could find the old DW8000 mod.. but i completely missed the boat on that.. now those are more rare than the synths itself. :P

@@AudioPilz The S612 is unique in that the legend goes that it started out life as a digital delay unit. I passed on one at a music store for less than 100 bucks with the drive. Wonder if this could be done even more cheaply on a Cr-1000 since it's a 505 without sequencer. Especially if you're just going to push midi to it anyway.

@@gbraadnl When playing heavily compressed sounds, the TR-505 may sound like a 12-bit sampling machine. This technique of improving a signal-to-noise ratio of these old 1980s 8-bit pieces of electronics is called "companding" - an abbreviation for a combination of compression (in the samples themselves) and expansion (during playback). The same algorithm (or similar) was used in LinnDrum, Emulator II, Oberheim DMX and so on.

HKA Design do mods for both the 505 and 626 with switchable sound banks. The 626 adds separate outs and tuning of each sound to the features of the 505, making it a real wolf in sheeps clothing.

@@AudioPilz From a quick inspection of the service manual, it seems like IC9 accepts trigger pulses which addresses what sound to be fetched from the EEPROM. Maybe one could bypass the EEPROM / DAC by installing a Teensy in there? Don't have a 505 atm to try it out.. Might be fun tho. =)

I just received the "imposter" kit from Ewan Colsell. Just to be sure: once installed, you lose all the INCREDIBLE samples that are on the original EEPROM, right? is there a way to keep both perhaps?
@AudioPilz
@AudioPilz 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that's the way it goes. You could get another PCB from Ewan and solder the original EPROM on it (be VERY careful when desoldering). You can exchange the daughter PCBs with the EPROMs easily
