I remember these, and remember wanting one for a while. I think these sold a lot (As did all QUASIMIDI GEAR..especially the 309 unit they made) on the basis of being used live, and not having to take your brick of a laptop back then, or a PC (OR even ATARI ST) based set up with you, to do your live set(s). But perhaps many people just couldn't produce anything more than a track or two that they were happy with, just with the unit alone. I think Jorg Schaff (I think that's how his name's spelt) was responsible for this and a lot of the Quasimidi instruments, and he went on to form Radikal Technologies, with their SPECTRALIS range of grooveboxes, amongst other things. Surprisingly, whilst the sound quality improved significantly, the user interface become more complex, with a 2 line backlight LCD screen employed to display even more functionality. Back to the sound, the SIRIUS , as well as the other grooveboxes Quasimidi made (I think there may have been a keyboard controller as well, similar to the Arturia variants) had this lo-fi grungy sound, which i think may have been 12 bit samples interpolated to give a better sheen using the effects. You can hear some odd stuff in the raw samples, which gives the game away. It's an odd choice this one, as the prices show how sought after they still are, which may be due to the look or some 90s nostalgia-based halo effect. But it's dated faster than a pair of flared combats with a glowstick in the backpocket, due to the sounds on it, and if you're brave enough to reprogram the whole thing, what you'll get out of it will be mostly of the same ilk. No matter what you do, everything that comes out of it will have that grungy, slightly lo-fi, distorted overcoating. If i remember correctly, it always sounded good coming out of the mini keyboard section P.A.'s in a shop, but when you plugged headphones in, you'd wonder where all the grime and even occasional hiss was coming from. Like using an old performance car, it has its moments of brilliance, but pushed hard and the flaws become noticeable. And you'll be grappling to steer it, to prevent your sonic drive from ending up in the nearest hedge.

I love your channel. Consider doing a bad gear review on the Roland Phraselab. I love it, but I imagine it is hated. You have to really learn to work around many flaws: slowest loading times of sequences and loops of any piece of hardware I own. Knobs feel cheap. One of those red led displays. hidden synth features you can only access with an external midi controller. No delay somehow, no compression, oh and the loops are just slightly out of phase with the build in synth (which lets you layer a loop with the same synth line for an...interesting effect) If I remember right you cannot use the slicer with the synth directly... It sounds like a gameboy on steroids...uhhhh is that good? The list goes on and on.

@@AudioPilz oh man. I got mine really cheap in 2009 or 2010. I then raided every charity shop for memory cards. I think I paid $155 on ebay. I now use it with a volca beats and a volca keys, using the phrase lab synth for my bass lines and so i can compress drums in the loop channels. The Phraselab probably sucks, but it was my first....groovebox? Looper? Oh, it is very friendly about letting you pre make loops on the pc, then loading them on to a flash card. Making a loop first on the phraselab, then modifying it in Reaper and reloading it into the phrase lab is the best way to get the best sound out of it if you want effects like say....delay

I've been watching your show for a while now and I really like it. It's cool to see how the old machines compare to current ones and usually the bad gear has something to offer, even now. Thank you

Feels like the guys who built this had a real vision and were technically very ambitious. “Phonetic Spectral Transformer” is presumably just techno babble for “Vocoder”? 🤣

You completely missed the vocoder section! This thing came with a gooseneck mic as standard.
@AudioPilz3 жыл бұрын
There's some short vocoder bits in the final musical bit but it was almost impossible for me to squeeze some proper sounds out of it. It's funny because all I hear is either "best vocoder" or "worst vocoder"

Had one of these back in 2008. Enjoyed it while I had it but then someone broke into my house and stole that and a couple other things. In this same vein another cool digital synth that people love to hate is the Oberheim OB-12. I have one and love it but people dog this synth all the time!

It's almost a shame that the Acces Virus is not that bad to qualify this year.
@AudioPilz3 жыл бұрын
Some people suggested it, tho ;)

I'd love to see an episode on an Access Virus, but it's not bad gear. It's still the best in its class, decades later. Granted, its entire category largely fell out of fashion for new gear since then, with new products being few and far between... but still. If you need a versatile flagship synth to play all the parts of a song simultaneously, based on midi from an external sequencer, there's probably nothing better. The main down side is ... people don't usually need that any more. Like, I tried that workflow, but I find it easier to multitrack clips from a monotimbral synth instead.
@AntonNidhoggr3 жыл бұрын
@@ToyKeeper I wouldn't recommend Virus (especially new one for its price) for one seeking a great analog sounding synth. But it's true that it can do a lot of stuff. I think it may be still a winner for dawless crowd. Also it looks cool ) As for a possible review. You know there was an opinion that Ti is bad core tone and Virus A or B is much better. I've seen battles about it on forums mb five-eight years ago ))) idk mb this could be qualified for the bad gear case )

Someone from one of my synth groups just bought this bad gear. I was going to recommend that you cover it, but within 30 seconds, I found that you already did. Your approach is a bit different, and still fun! I'll let the guy know that the knobs go to 11!

Magazines like Future Music hyped the f@ck out of this. FM and Computer Music really overrated a lot of gear back in the day: the Quasimidi range, the Hartmann Neuron, the Technics SL-DZ1200 off the top of my head, and low-balled classics like the Access Virus. Also, if I woke you up in the middle of the night, would you still sound like this?
