If you are after info on any bench, press 'J' to bring up the Field Guide. There is a lot of info in there. It would be worth a look just to see what info is in there.

Sand in desert or use silica to make glass

Your glassworking bench NEEDS water. If you make any glass structures without a water supply, you will not get reinforced glass. Ordinary glass breaks if you sneeze too hard...
