How do you create the best nebari after airlayering or even taking cuttings of Japanese maple bonsai?
Over spring I took airlayers and cuttings of 'Deshojo' Japanese Maples. This video shows how to work the roots and other steps in the aftercare of successful cuttings and airlayers. Follow these steps to create better nebari and have healthy growth in the year after propagation.
Separating airlayers with success: • Potting up air layers ...

I think you're correct about pond baskets. I have also found very dry roots with trees in these baskets despite careful regular watering. I think the original idea was for Pines and I am going to restrict this method to Pines.

Thanks Jelle I am very concern with this maple,... I started germinating some seeds I bought expensive last year... Now I have aroun 20 and want to propagate but is not easy... I am in souther Chile, start of Patagonia... All information is from northern emisphere, so I have fun trying to convert the seasons.... Actyally spring is on here, with still some cold days and wind... Lots of rain always, and a little lack of sun Still Iam doing well with local trees plus secuoya , oak and maple as outsiders Thanks and cheers from Patagonia

Hi Jelle! This was a great video. I just purchased a Deshojo and will more than likely do some light pruning in fall. I'm wondering if you think I'd get success if I tried cuttings over winter indoors under grow lights. I realize you don't need a whole lot of light. Wondering if your technique might work instead of just tossing the cuttings.
@GrowingBonsai
@GrowingBonsai Жыл бұрын
Hi John, In winter one can take cuttings, but the methods are a little different. Look up "hardwood cuttings" and "winter propagation". Typically it means cuttings in moist sand, mostly burried and wait for spring. Then pot them up individually under shelter for the growing season

I want to trunk chop it this coming spring of 2024 take it down to about 1-2 foot hight its in a big half oak barrel pot right now. Question is Will it survive such a chop? and shuld i do it in winter not spring? so its dormant
@GrowingBonsai

I am NOT sure what a redpoint maple is. BUT, maple backbud very well from such actions, so no worries there. Make sure you chop low enough so you do not have to chop lower in a year or two to get decent taper.

@GrowingBonsai
@GrowingBonsai Жыл бұрын
I am more int he field of waiting till later. Hard prune of course means a different thing to different people. But anything larger than a cm or maybe 2 I prefer to do over the growing season. But I am also a practical person and I work my trees when I have time, which does not always lead to the safest approach!

@@GrowingBonsai thanks. I think the sacrificial branch is 15mm now. It grows in an unfortunate angle on the trunk which means quite a big cut maybe 30 cm long and 15mm wide. Really I should have done it last summer.
@GrowingBonsai
@GrowingBonsai Жыл бұрын
@@greenmachinesweden Is there a reason to do it now? Could it wait till spring? You can always shorten it, and make the final cut in spring. (but 1.5cm is not all that thick. I am however concerned Sweden could have -5 in 2 weeks if weather turns)

Hi Jelle, i‘ve made the maple cuttings following your method in April, i think they’re doing well right now, so thank you for all the precious info! According to what have you said here, now i can slightly open the bag and then in october replant them all, right? (I live in Italy) I‘ve also tried to do some juniper cuttings but they’re not doing as well as the maples... is it possibile to put them in a bag too from your experience? Thanks in advance, i really appreciate you! Ps. I don’t know if you know something about Pine grafting, but that would be a very interesting argument for a video
