Amplifying acoustic guitars is a problem area for literally anyone who plays live with the ol’ flattop. Dan and I both do our fair share of acoustic gigs so we thought we’d start looking at some basics, many of which we covered in Part 1.
In this episode we extend our look at some floor-based devices to help enhance your plugged-in sound, alongside some more general tips, ideas and discussion around the whole subject. We chose the LR Baggs Align Series pedals because they’re new, and the T-Rex SoulMate Acoustic because it’s what Dan uses live. So without further ado…

Agreed. So many options. I watched one vid where a guy used a Nux Optima Air and just replaced the piezo pickup sound with an IR of a great sounding acoustic. Rather spiffy sounding. I have been interested in that pedal ever since.

It’s a simple answer: there is absolutely NOWHERE to hide playing acoustic!! And as Mick shows..., not everyone needs to hide behind loudness and effects!!! Just my 2 cents though. I could be wrong but I would bet the negatives all come from loud distorted rock bands

I was describing the effect of a good compressor pedal for a folkie friend - she usually just has a tuner between acoustic pickups and amp. I said it helps with those sorts of mistakes - hitting a note too hard or soft. She latched onto that, saying "Can I get a compressor pedal for my life?"

I'm with you Dan! I've been using my TRex Soulmate Acoustic since it first came out and it has enhanced my acoustic guitars' tones, the ease of my setup and my enjoyment in playing live acoustic music twice a week at a local club. I've always been an "electric" guy, but this little machine has allowed me to trick everyone into thinking I'm efficient on the acoustic guitar lol. Great job guys and cheers from northern Canada!!

I’m in s Folk rock band and do sound for a lot for acoustic acts. The rule of thumb we have always used is to find the “quack” frequency and dip it slightly. I will always recommend a Fisherman Aura Spectrum DI. It has the best natural sound simulation I’ve ever heard and is becoming an industry standard.

The BAGGS PARA is the most brilliant box I have ever used for ALL guitars that came through my door when I ran an open mic. From the shittiest Seymore Duncan or even vintage Lawrence (stick in the hole pickups).....the Baggs Para is a GAME CHANGER. Truly. I know you’re not “That PA Show” or “That Recording Show,” but I would love to hear and see your take on how to EQ different things (acoustic and electric guitars, on a soundboard and on an amp). Great! Add it to your long list of program ideas and keep up the great work! By the way, I play a Mesa Stiletto Ace - an amp with an EQ so adjustable that your KZbin colleague, Johann Segeborn, said it was easy to make the amp sound bad (if you don’t know what you’re doing - EQ-wise). It took me years to get a sound I liked, which only happened after watching many episodes of That Pedal Show and making a connection between my brain (various tidbits of information from you), my eyes (looking at the knobs), and my ears (the sound of the amp). I wish your show had been around when I was starting on this guitar journey so long ago. :)

Great stuff! This is so necessary as a lot of us do spend time play acoustic gigs in rowdy bars! I use the tangle wood T6 acoustic amp which is basically the AER 60 but cheaper and with less headroom. Can get you heard in smaller pubs and for the bigger/super rowdy stuff it has an XLR out too.

Incredibly helpful show guys. That "session" pedal is gold- a quick and easy way to get great, useful tone shaping! I'd love to see a show where you find a player who specializes in adventurous, outside the box, acoustic live performance- lots of fx and looping etc- just to push what we all think can be done with such a seemingly traditional instrument.

I had a Mesa Rosette. Had. It sounded boxy, just like yours. As an experiment I bypassed the speakers and ran to my fender acoustasonic ultralight cab and the tone improved immensely so the problem was in the speaker section, not the head. The AER sounds so much nicer. It would have been nice to run both setups through the AER. The Soulmate is a nice unit. I have one. The looper buttons are poorly located where you can, and will, accidentally step on the boost and tap switches. Switch toppers help a bit.

I would love another acoustic rig show where you go crazy with the pedal board. I'm playing a '99 Larrivee DV05E into any AER Compact 60 for about 10 years now. My signal chain is guitar > tuner > Clyde Deluxe > SP Compressor > FT MDV3 > Plimsoul > CH1 > TR2 > DD6 > MXR Carbon Copy > TCE Spark Mini Boost > AER (powered w a Truetone CS12 with the Plim, Spark, MDV3, and Compressor all at 18V). Recently (accidentally) won another Plimsoul on eBay and actually may run it with the other back to back to create a boosted low gain/high gain OD option. Would love to hear your thoughts. Maybe pitch the Plims and get the Tumnus! Love your show...more, More, MORE!!! Oh, and I do just play the guitar mic'd as well because it has such a great natural tone. All that gear is for my 5 pc band w 3 guitar front.

Given the fact that Dan and Mick are playing top-drawer guitars, with top-drawer pickup and preamp systems, the Session sounds fantastic! I would be interested to hear it with a mid-priced electro-acoustic. For those of us mere mortals with average guitars and pickups, I would recommend checking out the Zoom AC-2 Acoustic Creator Multi-Effects Pedal. It's a modelling system that does an excellent job of eliminating that piezo sound. It's roughly the same price as the Session, and has reverb and a boost. There's a great video by Bruno from GLB Productions that demonstrates it in a very unbiased way, and his review is very detailed. I know I'm late to the party on this one, but for anyone coming to this late, food for thought.

I'd love to get a G2 and the 3 "big Strymon"pedals, but money is tight so I'm using a Line 6 HX Effects as the center piece (someday for the G2!). It sounds really good with with my Martin 000-42 with the Baggs Anthem and the Baggs pedals play very nicely with it. Thanks again for all your fabulous videos! Cheers!

You nailed it....when Mick just played into the amp (no pedals) by saying that is a good sound. Meaning....good guitar, decent pickup, decent amp.....that is all you need. The pedals (and i own the earlier versions of the LRBagg's pedals (no reverb)) are just fine tuning. The most useful, giving the biggest bang for the buck, is the LRBaggs EQ....

You both seem to like your acoustic sound to be kind of dark. It sounds great. For some unknown reason I find myself trying to get sparkle out of my EQ. Presence. I'm also one of those guys who happen to love the sound of a fresh set of strings. I love the sound of finger squeaking and a bit of fret rattle caused by Lower than normal action. This video you guys made has inspired me to try a different EQ. Less brightness and sparkle and more low end and darker colors. Or maybe it's just the sound I perceive through these headphones.

absolutely brill guys, being at the mercy of the PA/ sound "expert" down the local open mic night is always something to look forward to. Obviously the built in electronics on your chosen guitar plays a massive part, I'm currently trying to find some love for the Taylor expression system 2 on my 510e, guitar plays lovely but plugged in I cant get rid of that digital/processed/modelled kind of tone. Its doing my head in, think I'm going to try one of those LR Baggs session pedals, they sound the business. I'm also using a fishman loudbox mini, but because I'm not impressed with the expression system, I cant judge if I like the amp or not. Yep, still down that hole after umpteen gear/guitar changes. Your two acoustic vids have been a big help. Many thanks

hey mick, if im not mistaken for the Anthem, even if you roll in all the microphone, the low end frequencies are still taken from the undersaddle (a range that microphones typically struggle to pick up), so u get the best of both worlds! amazing stuff once again. im an acoustic player thats been getting into electric recently; seeing that same inquisitiveness and enthusiasm for acoustic is really nice :)

I'm amazed to hear Mick say he never uses a D.I. for acoustic guitar. I'll take a quality D.I. over an amp EVERY time. I have nothing against acoustic amps. There are some awesome ones out there and I have owned a Fishman Loudbox Performer which I loved. But a back injury changes things. I currently use a Fishman ToneDEQ running straight to the mixer strictly for acoustic solo gigs. I carry a pair of QSC K10.2 powered speakers, using one for FOH and one for a monitor, EQ'd for feedback control. 2.5 lbs beats 30lbs when back pain is a factor. And I get clean, full, and warm tone.

My amp is the DI as well. I use the amp because, a) there quite often isn't a sound engineer and, b) even if there is, I can't trust them to understand my pickup system, so I make it easy. I understand the portability issues, and maybe I'll be there one day too. For now, I still carry big amps, big cabs (for electric guitars) and, way too often, the damn PA system as well!

@@ThatPedalShow In those circumstances, I would carry an amp as well. In fact, that is something I read and hear far too often these days, so many musicians having horrible experiences with the person(s) running sound at gigs. And I'm disappointed at what they describe. Often, they have a dim view of all sound engineers as a result. In my 44 years of performing live, I've had very few similar experiences. Bands I've played in with my brothers carried our own systems and sound man for the first 15 years. Then for 6 years, we hired out sound and light production. It cost us half of what we made, but all the private sound techs we hired had top knotch gear and were masters at maximizing it. One was phenomenal. For the rest of the years, I've owned the sound system and lighting and have mixed from stage. I currently carry a VERY compact but powerful system including subs, digital mixer, and a dmx lighting controller. Because of my back issues and age, I typically arrive 3 to 4 hours before showtime. I set it all up at a comfortable pace and have the system tuned and the lights aligned before the others arrive. Then I have time to change clothes and relax as well. In my gigging area of Virginia, North Carolina, and West Virginia in the USA, I know of no bands who don't carry their own sound or hire it out. The only times I know of musicians using a house system are on open mic nights. I do love guitar and bass amps. I still own several. I just don't gig with them. But every now and then if I'm home alone, I'll crank one up and take a ride.

3:10 - Did Dan just say, "they are so bloody expensive' - about a dog, whilst holding a Martin Acuostic and backed by £20k+ of gear?!! It's cool my life is too complicated for a dog as well. Just not sure if expense is the determining factor!

Damian Griffiths guess expense is all relative at least with gear you know the total cost up front! Labradors at least mine... cost of dog, first vet bill after he ate a stick that then got stuck. Ate some shoes, the sofa, more shoes, chewed through the carpet, ate some more shoes, finally 10 years on had a tumour, operation eventually passed away and had a private cremation! £20k gear was probably a bargain! Dan just missed out on having a great canine mate that I wouldn’t have missed out on!

Great show as always gentlemen. Most eq that we would use are reductive anyway, especially amp eq. So we generally only cut anyway. Which is why I get so frustrated when people say "set it to 12 n go from there. Also when u learn about amp manufacturer and the pots and how it all actually works. I set my amp eq to max and then cut the from there. As proven on the one amp one pedal show with mics two rock.

I love you guys! Isaw these 2 shows when they came out, and wondered if you had ever tried a Fishman Aura Spectrum. It has a tuner, volume, EQ, compressor, and 3-notch feedback suppressor with its own foot switch. But wait, there's more! 1/4" mono input and output with input trim control and balanced XLR D.I. Eleven acoustic guitar models and a user defined model and a blend control. Never a quack or even a peep. My RainSong is pretty bright, but I can get a good balanced tone with the Aura and it has never failed.

It would be interesting to see a popular acoustic and the most popular 'add in' pickup system and see a good sound from it. You always see a lot of those clamp on pickups at acoustic nights.

Guys I own a Hughes and Kettner Access, one of the rarest midi-controlled tube amps there ever was. It has three channels, one of which is a solid-state channel, that has a built-in compressor. The output of this amp goes to my Hughes & Kettner VS-250 Stereo power amp, which has 50-watts each side, with each side having four EL-84 tubes. An accoustic guitar plugged into this setup is stereo compressed heaven. How and Why H&K quit making this amp is beyond my comprehension. The preamp has midi-switchable built-in input boosts for treble and mids, and a midi-programmable equalizer. I have a Martin HD-35 with a Fishman pickup I bought, and when I plug into this, with Lexicon LXP-1 reverb in one of the effects loops on it, and I'm telling you, you are ready to play at Woodstock if that's your bag, baby! And guess what, the other two channels on the amp are your electric guitar channels! It even has a midi conrollable effects loop for an external preamp, of which in today's world a fine wete/dry/wet setup can be created by putting a 50 watt Marshall half-stack here, with a line out functioning as the external preamp return. The possibilities are endless, but the rig is a rack.

Hey guys! I’d really like to have your thoughts on the rig that Billy Strings has been touring with. The best way I can describe his sound to anyone who hasn’t heard it would probably be “psychedelic bluegrass”. Check out his “Turmoil and Tinfoil” album! He uses pedals in a really interesting and dramatically effective way with a pre-war/scalloped bracing Martin style boutique acoustic and a mic pickup that he duct tapes to the guitar. His live sound is an absolutely incredible balance of Nashville bluegrass super clean and sections full of heavily saturated pedal effects. I think the things he’s doing are worth exploring with TPS!

The Collins (sp?) sounded much nicer in my opinion. I found the Martin had a bit too much presence and would have used the eq to dial back the scratchy quality. DI is practically how most people connect an acoustic to the front of house in a band situation where you already have an electric guitar amp and no acoustic amp. Great video guys.

Please keep making episodes that you find fulfilling because you'll make more of them that way. And I LOVE your show. I do not like playing acoustic guitar, but if you like making episodes about that instrument, then you should. This will be the last acoustic TPS episode I watch. I found Better Plugged-In Acoustic Part 1 to be fascinating because I'm so ignorant of that whole woody area. Part 2 was significantly less educational.
