Friendly sound guy here, great show as usual and LOVE this topic because I can't tell you how many crap sounding acoustics I've run sound for. I'm not much of an acoustic player myself, but here's just some sound guy nuggets to enrich this guitar loving audience: - Acoustic amps are way better than wedges most of the time because the front surface of your acoustic resonates, and changing the location and angle of the stage sound putting a human body between the speaker and the guitar helps enormously. - cheap sounding pickups just can't be fixed at the board, but the good ones while kinda gross pre-eq can sound fantastic once they've been EQ'd. So far the best sounding direct sound I've ever heard came from a Mcpherson guitar played by a blue grass pro who's been playing longer than I've been alive. The worst sound is tied between Ovation and Ibanez (sorry) - The back side of speakers put out a ton of low end, so 99 times out of 100, I'm having to trim a bunch of low out of your signal to keep it from resonating into feedback, that's why it sounds so "thin" to you, and sorry but that's just the way it's gotta be - A feedback buster DOES have a negative effect on your guitar, but it's far less negative that howling feedback, so if you're playing in a loud situation or with a full band, plug that hole. - The number one sign for me of an acoustic player that's going to give me a good signal is walking in with one of those LR Baggs acoustic preamps, the one with the built in tuner and parametric EQ. I don't know why, but almost everyone who walks in with one of those just does a better job. - Play your strings harder than you think you should, it just makes everything sound better. I'm not saying full punk rock jackhammer, but put some heat on it when playing live. Hope that helps, or at least gives you a little more idea of how your sound guy is thinking.

Sven, hi, having been dissatisfied with my cheap piezo equipped guitars for years I asked my bandmate how he got such a good sound with his Martin x series electro acoustic. It turns out that it's not the onboard preamp but a passive DI box between the guitar and PA. I tried it with my low budget acoustic and it works well, it now sounds like an acoustic when amplified. Perhaps this would work with the Ovation and Ibanez guitars too? Or did you do this already? Ian

All I can say is FINALLY!!! 😍 I’m an acoustic performer only and I’ve spent 10 years forming my wet/dry/wet rig with my Blackwood Cole Clark that blends a piezo, condenser and transducer for the dry and a fishman black stack hunbucker soundhole pick up into my pedal board including stacked o/d and modulations into an ac30/Roland ac60 acoustic amp/68 reissue Princeton reverb. The devil is in the details for acoustic and I’m so happy you mentioned about the utilities making the difference. Keep it up fellas I loved this episode!!! #LifeLongSubscriber 😍😍😍

A very big thank you for taking on this topic, gents. As a songwriter, and a guy in a band, I love what acoustic can do for a song, even as a smaller part of a huge rock sound at times, but have always struggled with getting it to sound good enough to justify using it live over a clean electric. For big events I'll rent one with a much better pickup, but it's still not the same. This, and the follow up episode, are such useful information. And this from a guy who plays electric 95% of the time, and has a board with 15+ pedals on it. I think many of us wanted to know more about this stuff WAY more than you thought we would. If my acoustic could sound as good on stage as it did in the house, I'd consider myself more of an acoustic player.

One more comment. As you guys pointed out in the latter half of the video - context is everything! I recently started playing at an open blues jam session with a house band. They love backing me up when I play acoustic fingerstyle blues. But in that context, I have to set my EQ brighter to cut through the band. I would never set my EQ that way if I was playing solo - too much treble and the bass is too low. But in the band setting it works. The audience can hear my guitar, including the attack of my percussive alternating bass, but I stay out of the way of the rhythm section frequency-wise.

If you’re stuck for an acoustic amp try your electric valve amp and plug a cheap piezo horn tweeter into the extension speaker socket and sit it on the top of the amp. Gives it some full range capability so you’re not having to boost the treble eq much and making it too harsh. The impedance of the piezo is very high so no problems with impedance mismatch/ amp damage risk. Conversely have modded my passive monitor wedges to be able to switch OUT the tweeter horn so can use the 12” main driver as a closed back electric guitar speaker at a push if you have a speaker failure at a gig.

In my personal opinion the BEST Box to make ANY PICKUP (from a shitty Seymore Duncan or a vintage Lawrence stick in the hole) the BAGGS PARA Box makes ANY pickup sound like a diamond. I ran open mics for years, and it was my GO TO for ALL guitars.

Very practical advice…did I say that right?…There’s sooo many options with p/u’s for acoustics it mind blowing & I think I’ve tried the most common ones and have really taken a liking to the K&K pure mini & the Fishman Rare Earth Blend…I’ve been plugging into an orange tiny terror & use the fishman platium pro…then use multiple pedals to shape the sound…boss ge-7, really does the trick..chorus,verb,delay, even an echo sex & I’m in heaven. It’s a lot to drag around to an open mic but I don’t these day’s very often…the Orange TT Combo is a great amp & cleans up well & plays nice with pedals…I have an acoustic amp but it don’t cut it like the TT. Wish I’d seen this video 4years ago…you guys are real players I enjoy watching. Cheers

Accoustics are great topic for you especially considering your insight. I am hoping for part on the "work needed to be done at mixing console". Can you see into that for a bit - eq, compression, etc.. What can a sound guy do to make accoustic sound nice (especially whet there are more of them). I would appreciate that because i am being on both sides of the PA.

I play live acoustic a lot and I have the Fishman version (Ellipse Matrix) of your LR Baggs that has an undersaddle and microphone pickup. The only difference that is super key is that is has a phase reversal button which really helps with feedback and getting your guitar to work with the space you are playing in. I rarely use the microphone option because it doesn't cut through the mix as well as the undersaddle. As far as pedals go, I go straight into a JHS Pulp 'n' Peel Compressor V4 because it has an XLR output. That goes straight into the board where they add a little reverb. The Pulp n Peel is great because it has EQ and a blend knob to blend in just the right amount of compression. Check it out! It has made a world of difference in my live acoustic sound.

That AER blew the Messa Boogie out of the water. Or certainly in the KZbin recording. The room may have been different. It’s interesting, I have a lovely Marshall Acoustic Amp, which have now owned for quite a few years. When I used to play live actually some years ago it was at a Folk Club where it was a sort of open mic thing. Each of us would have a slot of three songs and after a quick tune up etc in the back room would be introduced by whoever was delegated as MC for the evening the week before and either handed the guitar cable Jack, or plugged in by the MC. No option to use floor FX or Acoustic Amps. Oddly considering the sound engineer for the evening was whoever was sat next to the desk, the sound was never dreadful. And this was considering that each club member would have different sort of pickup and or pickup/onboard preamp combinations. Generally of course the members who tended to sit near the desk did tend to know enough to get the best sorts of sounds. Perhaps we were lucky in the acoustics of the room too. But would really have loved to have had the option to be able to use a stage amp or floor based dedicated acoustic preamp. And had on a few occasions before moving area where I lived had suggested having a stage floor unit as an option. Was a great Folk Club and really miss the atmosphere of it. In many ways because it took me out of my natural comfort zone of being part of the band in an electric group. I got more from it. Had to be the front man for those three songs. Had to sing instead of being the bass player or Rhythm Guitarist in a band. When you’re up there in that solo slot and have to be everything all at once, it becomes a steep learning curve. Got a lot from that time going every week with three new songs each time. Really pushes you. Miss it greatly.

I remember when piezo pickups first really took off, and suddenly everyone’s live acoustic tone went to sh*t. In the early days the tone everyone was getting with them had this weird trebley, farty splat on the attack that sounded nothing like a natural acoustic sounds. But sometime in the late 90s, I remember local celebrity, Ken Tobias, returned to live in our hometown again after decades, and he showed up at the pub where I went for weekly open mic night. When he got up and played, I couldn’t get over his tone. He sounded just as good as if he was playing to a really good microphone, but he wasn’t; he was plugged right into the board. I don’t know if it was a piezo, soundboard transducer, or a combination, but that was when I found out they had finally gotten the tech with acoustic pickups where it needed to be.
@lz4005
@lz4005 6 жыл бұрын
I skipped around a bit, so I might have missed them covering this, but an unbuffered piezo pickup sends out a signal in the millions of ohms, but electric guitar amps are made to receive the 10k ohm signal magnetic pickups produce. That's what the preamp in an acoustic is really for, to buffer the signal to the ohmage most amps and PA channels want to get. Acoustic amps (many of them at least) are made to receive that million ohm signal from an unbuffered piezo and make it sound good.

Steve Earle is great, I've seen him live so many times. Once saw him with the Del McCoury bluegrass band and I was amazed by the fact that they only had one mic on stage and would step forward and back like you say. I've not played acoustic for years but I was given one recently as thanks for hanging a door for a friend (lol). I love it but it's hard work when you're used to playing electric. Acoustic !!! I'm so excited.. Fact- One acoustic guitar is no match for two or more people (drunk people, lets be honest) singing at the top of their lungs in a living room. That same guitar plugged into a little Fender Champion600 (those cheap ones that were out not so long ago) and turned up not too high can actually make all that noise sound like, well, noise but way more musical. I have been toying with the idea of putting something between the guitar and the amp for ages.. Cant wait to watch this.

Nice video. My latest gear acquisition was a small acoustic amp (a Boss Acoustic Singer Live), and you touched on a lot of the things that I've really been enjoying about it. Acts as a mini-PA, you can monitor yourself with it, and it has two XLR DI outputs which can be configured in various ways (e.g., mix, separate channels, skip effects) which sound *MUCH* better than going straight from the guitar into the board. You've got me wondering about upgrading the acoustic pickup system in my Martin, though. The one I take out to play is one of the Road Series models with a Fishman Sonitone.

It uses an SRT Zero Impact Pickup. And what is the best way to plug a passive output into a PA mixer? Direct into the LINE input (BAL/UNBAL) or using a DI box and into the MIC input. I only ask because I did an open mic and my guitar had no signal. I think the sound guy was a bit drunk I didn't check the signal path myself. Had to borrow his guitar which was not in my tuning. I feel your pain Mick on trusting the sound guy with your tone. I'm obviously going to be using my Soulmate from now on but even then I'm not sure how to plug the xlr outputs into the desk. I'm guessing into the MIC inputs. I understand gain staging. So I'll gain my guitar input til it clips on the Soulmate, then back off slightly. Then keeping the MIC input at 0 (unity), increase the Soulmate output volume until it clips the mixer signal and then back off slightly again. Think that's right. Anyway, would be great to get a tutorial on that. Acoustic guitars with Active pickups too, do they need a DI, and which input to put them in. Bit geeky I know, but when you're faced with a sound guy not totally on it, at least I'll be able to get it right myself. Appreciate any advice. Thankyou, keep up the good work. Peace out. Joe.

Could you do an episode on the electric guitar options for acoustic sounds i.e. simulator pedals, piezo saddles, out of phase pickups with tone rolled back. One of my favourite local soli cover singers uses a parker fly into an AER amp

It’s a very specific kind of sound that Dan and I never use. So if and when we do that, we’d probably get somebody in who knew what they were talking about. Cheers!

@@ThatPedalShow this is the fella I like. Based in Dorset, great sound (that is shouldn't be as it is so twangy and harsh) and amazing technique. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qGmbp3p9aKx0aas

@@ThatPedalShow also I love the knowledge you bring but really enjoy when you try something unfamiliar or out of you depth. I know it lights up the comments but really like seeing you applying the wealth of knowledge to something different.

Mick knows the best match for acoustic guitars is not brown stuff, but floral shirts. :P Felt like an Acoustic Paradiso spin-off and as good and informative as the "original". I really enjoyed this one because I often play at church and have to deal with cheap acoustic guitars plugged in a cheap old desk with a terrible PA system in a 300 year old building that was not designed for that and somehow make it sound good. Not an easy task. But you guys gave me some good ideas on what to do the next time around. So, yeah, man shall not live by electric guitars alone (just to say that it's no problem at all to do more acoustic oriented episodes). :B Cheers!

Very good episode. And WOW, that LR Baggs pedal is fantastic! Pains me a bit to say it, but I liked it better than the Mesa Boogie.

You guys can sing too! Keep on with the great videos! And please do a show about the Kemper! I’ve read that it can also be used with acoustic guitars with great results!

If “a little knock” refers to a drink or two, perhaps that accounts for the improved sound quality over the guitar breathing outside of the case for a while! I’ve had similar experience. But just like with darts, there is a sweet spot, over and under which the bulls-eye is harder to find. Also in talking to women.

Have you guys ever tried the Bodyrec pedal by TC Electronic?... it provides a similar effect to the LR Baggs pedal you used here but at more affordable price point and a smaller footprint.

Great show guys! Though I enjoy all of your episodes, this one really stood out because I play acoustic most of the time. Out of curiosity, will you be playing any guitars with active pickups and an on board EQ on your next episode? Love your show.Cheers from North Carolina!
