My big boy Jake weighed 108 pounds. He looked almost exactly like this boy but had a little more light brown on his back and his ears were brown. I got him in 2010 and I had to let him go at 12 1/2 years old. That was the most heartbreaking thing I’ve ever done. 💔 It was mentioned that a White Swiss Shepherd is not recognized by the Kennel Club in US and Canada but a White German Shepherd is recognized by the Kennel Club. My big boy Jake was registered at the Canadian Kennel Club when I purchased him from a breeder in northern Ontario. Jake was the best dog/friend I ever had. I miss him so much. My mom dated a guy WAY back in the 80s. He had served in the Army and was stationed in Germany for a time. He adopted a Swiss shepherd and brought him home after he came back to the States. The dog's name was Gandalf and he was the most chill dog I have ever seen. He was certainly down for a veg session on the couch but he could also be very energetic and fun when he wanted to be. That dog was the coolest animal I had ever met to that point. Awesome dog and breed!!

@@azyrennvd4814 I think German Shepherds have been bred with curved backs in the past and it has caused health problems so people are trying to start breeding to where the shepherds have a proper straight back. @thewiirocks
@thewiirocks Жыл бұрын
@@azyrennvd4814 Lisa an Bree covered the slope. You can see it in most photos of German Shepherds as that’s been a standard for the breed for a long time. The reason why this is bad is that it puts a tremendous amount of stress on their hindquarters. Which is compounded by the fact that the hips and joints ended up compromised to get that sloping look. Many Shepherds have an underlying condition known as Hip Dysplasia where the socket isn’t fully covering the ball of the bone. This can lead to pain and a large number of medical conditions that can make the dog’s life miserable and the vet bills high.

In the U.S. and Canada, they are still just considered White Shepherd variants. They have actually been around in some fashion since the inception of the German Shepherd Breed. But the gene that causes the white fur is recessive, so if you breed one with a standard colors Shepherd, you get standard color puppies. For the longest time, the white color was considered a disqualifying trait and white puppies were often destroyed by the breeders. There was also a misconception for a long time that White Shepherds were contributing to the dulling or lightning of standard Shepherd coat colors. I think it was around the late 80's early 90's that there was enough interest in the variant that breeders finally began to breed them intentionally. Because Switzerland was the first country to officially recognize the breed, they have since been named the Swiss Shepherd. And I know all this because of my own White Shepherd. You will find that the only video I have ever posted is of my own pupper playing soccer.

Very informative! We rescued a white shepherd and he was an outstanding dog. The rescue didn’t know if we’d want such a calm shepherd. Now his demeanor makes sense. He looked quite similar with some tan mixed in with his white fur. My son named him Tanner. We lost him at age 12. 💕

We have a two year old female WSS. Easily by far the best and smartest dog I've ever had. I've lost count to the amount of commands and words that she recognizes. Where I go, she will follow. She has a behaviour inteligence that's off the charts. We've taken her almost to every scenario, from cannoying to moutain bike rides, to dog parks, restaurants, slow walks, outdoor runs, music concerts, beach, friends houses, shopping, you name it and she always behaves properly. In Portugal animals can't go inside shops, so she just sits and waits at the door. Very gentle with all animals. In the house she's alert and signals strangers but not excessively. Absolutely focused on us. No one else exists. Strangers can call her or try to interact with her, and she just ghosts them. Because of this she has helped two friends of mine to overcome their fear of dogs. And of course, incredibly beautiful with the whitest white coat I've seen. There isn't one single time that we go out without someone smiles at us, try to pet her of even kiss her. I've met other WSS and they have similar treats and characteristics and this video just proves that WSS is an awesome breed. I regularly watch your videos and boy...you have some very badly behaved dogs, not like this one who was a delight.

I would be interested to know what type of voodoo was performed on that Swiss to have zero prey drive. In all honesty, it's minor in mine, but it's directed at cats. He doesn't want to harm them, just to catch them long enough that they'd play with him. Somehow communication falls apart when he uses his considerably large mouth to catch them. So he ends up crying, not because they scratched him, but because they still ran away from him. I have gotten very good at spotting cats in random bushes as we walk, but I sadly haven't developped night vision to the extent I need it to spot them before he does.

@@alinasartcafe We had ours as a foster (now in her forever home!) and have cats at home and she was very interested, but would never chase - even when they displayed prey-like activity (running, etc). Not sure what magic was involved, but she was SUPER sweet with our older cat (21), and would always try to mother him by lying next to him and pulling him into her belly with her paws or nudging him with her nose, then licking and cleaning him. He is grumpy old gus, but he loved the attention and would roll on his back and purr madly as she cleaned him! We thought maybe she was a mill mom who had her puppies taken away, but never got any details, other than she was not fixed and had obviously had at least one litter previsouly. She was just a sweetheart with our other animals!

The DSV has disqualified the white colour as a fault even though Max von Stephanitz said no dog is bad because of its colour. This human prejudice forced the White GSD to be continued as a new breed and the end result is the WSS we have today.

@fiprosha
@fiprosha 2 ай бұрын
@sabin..5331 Hey! It's been going really well. Definitely a great breed! I just watched this video again and I agree with most points about this breed. I like to call her a "German Shepherd Light" and it's also why I got this breed. Definitely still a working dog, so there's a ton of energy and potential there, but also very manageable and really relaxed and calm too at home. Easy to train, super smart, really friendly. Does require you to put in quite a bit of work too though. The only point from the video I wouldn't necessarily agree with is the "less anxious." I never owned a German Shepherd, so I can't compare, but my Swiss Shepherd definitely used to be anxious, though mostly rooted in frustration and her being overwhelmed. She used to have what I liked to call "mental breakdowns" when there were too many new impressions outside or when she had to patiently wait. Never seen something like that with any other dog but my dog trainer said it was quite common for this breed in their first 1-2 years of life. But 95% of the time, she's the best dog ever. :)
@sabin..5331

@@fiprosha Thank you for your response! "German Shepherd Light" that's sweet 😄 I'm glad that you are happy with this breed. My dog (English cocker spaniel) died 3,5 months ago. I was thinking about a new dog and this breed caught my eye. However, I'm not sure about it yet. Your response is very helpful to me. I was talking with other owners of this breed and they said that WSS is " very very sensitive" and you must train them only in a positive way. You said that your dog has "mental breakdowns". Do you think he has them because he is a "sensitive breed" or is it only your case? I think that I am very sensitive too, so I'm not sure if I would be the right owner for them 😅 I'm sorry for my English. Unfortunately, I'm still learning.
@fiprosha
@fiprosha 2 ай бұрын
@@sabin..5331 Oh no, I'm sorry to hear about your dog. That has to be hard. I honestly wouldn't say that my WSS is sensitive and I also disagree with the idea of only positive training in general. The mental breakdowns are definitely not because she's sensitive, but more due to a lack of frustration tolerance (even though we actually actively trained that!) and her having a hard time processing certain impressions. Like, sometimes you drive to a new spot to go for a walk, and she gets so excited that she's already whining in the car. Then, once she's out of the car, she wants to go exploring asap. Walking next to you with a good heel is literally impossible (even though she can technically do it) because my dogs brain is everywhere but with me. If you don't let her run right away, she'll start whining and crying and it gets worse the more you insist on her being patient before she's allowed to run. There's often just a lot of energy that I think mine still needs to learn how to handle. This has already gotten a lot better though over time and with her first heat. I've also asked a dog trainer about this because I was really worried I was doing something wrong, and he only laughed and said this was really very normal behaviour for this breed. They tend to get really easily overwhelmed by the world outside. I'm sure not all of these dogs are like this, but mine certainly is, and from what I heard, it's nothing uncommon. These meltdowns really aren't the worst though, haha. As long as you don't care that other people probably think your dog is crazy. I like to compare them to a girl lying on the supermarket floor crying and screaming because they didn't get that chocolate bar they wanted. But yeah, mine's not sensitive though. I still do mostly positive training though because my dog is smart enough to know that she's faster and stronger than me. Like, recently I taught her not to pick up random food from the ground. If you tell her "NO!", she just eats it faster because she's absolutely aware that there's nothing I can do if she's off leash. So I taught her to basically find food for me, sit down, and she then gets a way better treat for it. She loves working with me, but it needs to be fair and worthwhile for her too. Where are you from? Because I was gonna say that maybe the WSS breed might also be a bit different in your country since I'm from Europe and figured you were from the US. I could also write you a giant essay though on why this breed is pretty much the best breed imo haha.

I took my mom to her hairdresser yesterday and she does things out of her own home. I heard a doggo whining and I asked her if she had a dog. She said yes and I asked her if she would let the dog out. It instantly came to me for affection. She was such a good dog, a cross between a lab and a husky. She had the hetero husky eyes. I made a joke of the dog never getting any loving and the woman agreed with me! Wth? She told me she got the dog "because it was so pretty" but over the years she ignores it because it didn't turn out how she wanted it to. This poor dog was so loving! She was wound up because she doesn't get any exercise. I took her for a walk and after a couple of leash corrections, she was able to refocus and not pull me. I was amazed at how easily she responded, what with being half husky. You could hear her long nails tap on the concrete. She needs some TLC. The woman also has three cats that she pets and gives attention to, right in front of the dog. Pardon my French, but what a bitch this woman is. The woman told me flatly, "You can have her if you want." I wish I could, but my lease agreement doesn't allow pets. I'd like to go there once a week to walk her, trim her nails, give her some healthy treats, and just love her. I don't know whether to take her to a no-kill Humane Society, because she's older and unfortunately people are largely against getting older doggos. It's sad. Would she go there with the hopes of finding a good family that will love her or do I turn a blind eye and let her stay there, where no one really cares/loves her? Some days, I really hate people in general. I'm hoping that maybe I can get some helpful comments here.

They're very common here in many European countries, so it's surprising people over the sea don't know the breed. Many find they're a good option for a GSD, it's easier to find one that is both healthy and has good character, and is suitable for a companion pet, than such a GSD.
