Not better than the anime film. However, severely underrated and kinda misunderstood. It's actually based more on the original source material than the '95 film. A lot of people don't seem to realize or understand that. It's not trying to be a 1:1 copy or even really a remake of it. Now it is flawed for sure, but what can't be overlooked is the absolutely phenomenal visuals and score. Special effects, costume design, cinematography, sound design, and music are all fantastic. Lorne Balfe is an incredibly talented and underrated composer. Also listening to the Atmos track on the 4K disc with a high-end headset or surround sound speakers will blow you away. This movie definitely gets unfairly criticized. It's a fun watch.

my only issue with it is how simplified it is.

@@Ghorda9 It isn't really simplified. The 2017 movie just has a different, more personal take on the characters. The live action asks "How would one deal with being a cyborg?" while the original ask "What is it to be human?". Both are great in their own right.

@@Ghorda9 Of course series will go deeper due to a series having more time to do that than a single movie. However, the live action does go deep on the personal side of things. The original anime movie goes deeper asking the questions about humanity. The live action goes deeper asking how a human would deal with being a cyborg and with the isolation one would feel due to that. It is just a different angle they took on the subject matter and it isn't simplified or worse than the other. It is just different and that is good.

It's a matter of Perpective really, Westerners deal with Existentialism differently then Easterners do. They also aren't slavish in adapting source material like how Dragonball is based on Journey to the West.

Her shell is just that, a synthetic construction. It has nothing to do with race. Just ask all the japanese, including the creator of the manga, who had no problem with ScarJo being in the role.

The reason people were upset is that they thought they were race swapping her bu tg it was built into the story that the company put a Japanese women's mind into a caucasian body. Much line the Anime this is an Adaptation if the Manga which tell a completely different story then the Amime movie or SAC. In the Manga the Major uses an Off the rack Caucasian body that was heavily modded, it's a kin to someone taking off the rack PC case and building a super advanced PC inside. They didn't race swap her that how she's supposed to be they just adapted the story in a different way. Hell the puppet master story is just a small part of the Manga yet the turned into a whole movie. Motoko in the Manga is much more like your typical Shirow Hellcat like Duenen Knute and Leona Ozaki. They tone her waaaaay down in the Adaptations.

"On the nose" dialogue in the opening scenes aside, I think this is overall a very good effort at bringing a live action version to the screen. It's also worth noting that if you have the western bluray release it contains the Japanese dub, notable for the fact that Scarlett and Pilou are dubbed by original anime voice actors Atsuka Tanaka and Akio Otsuka. If you're at all familiar with the original anime movies and the two Stand Alone Complex series which followed, it makes for an intriguing viewing connection between worlds.

It's funny how everyone who was upset about Johansson playing this character are the same people praising all the blackwashing going on these days. First off, this movie was excellent! The creator of the manga came out about the "whitewash" and stated that Major, the main character, has no race and is just a brain in a cybernetic body and can be portrayed by anyone. Major looks like a white woman in the animated movie, so to me, Johansson was the perfect fit.

THANK YOU!! Finally someone else said it! This is why I had so many arguments with people who were fussing so much about why an asian actress was not cast for her role. I mean, as you said, her cybernetic body is literally a white female with purple hair, it made perfect sense to cast ScarJo! They even went out of their way to cast an asian actress for the flashbacks she had of her former life in her original human body. Wholeheartedly agree with you!

Actually, the race difference in live action is pretty on lore. The idea about what if a Japanese girl called Motoko's mind is inside a Caucasian looking woman work for a special force division in police department is pretty fucked up and the message the original story wants to convey about the future

The anime didn't go into the origins of her human brain at all, and there were no fragments of memories. She wondered about herself, but it wasn't at all about her past. (IDK about the manga or the S.A.C series). Project 2501 was the generation of the AI that became self aware and made itself the hacker "Puppet Master". He/it learned about the Major and the story was all about him wanting to merge minds with her. Anime characters often look Western/anglo, and the retcon of her being built as an agent made enough sense to put her into an anglo body and give her the new name Mira Killian in this movie. They could have skipped that and used a Japanese actress, but it was made in the US. Someone should redo it in Japan if anyone wants to, but the creator was happy with this. For a fun Japanese film, look for "Cybirg She" or "My girlfriend is a Cyborg" with the excellent actress Haruka Ayase: Comedy with some rom-com aspects, a little darkness and time travel. Pays homage or gives nods to other popular movies and culture.

@@HowIamDriving yeah, her Brain is enclosed in metal. She is fully cyborg - meaning her whole body is fake. They pretty much stuck her brain in a robot body. It goes into it more, I think in the second season of the Standalone complex. Plus batou says that, IIRC, in the elevator scene.

With this, I have similar feelings to Godzilla 1998. Is it a good Godzilla film? No. Is it a good giant monster movie? Absolutely. Ghost In The Shell 2017 is in no way a substitute or even really a good representation of the original animated film, but it is however a fantastic mid-budget cyberpunk action thriller along the lines of something like 2018's Upgrade. I like it, for what it's worth.

I have to wonder why there were no complaints about a Nordic white guy playing Batou. Why no complaints about two of the team members being replaced with African American actors? Why no complaints about a white guy playing Kuze? This movie uses bits and pieces from the original anime along with Stand Along Complex and 2nd Gig. But there were no complaints about anything other than the incredible sin of a white woman playing a synthetic person with a human brain, got to roll out the outrage for that one.

So many of the characters were made to clearly look white so the idea that all the characters were supposed to be japanese just because a japanese person wrote it is extremely silly. People forget that this was inspired by Bladerunner. Many of the characters are clearly meant to look white. The people who complained about this movie being "white washed" are the same people who cheer every time a white character or historical figure is cast as anything non-white. They cheer when literal nordic gods are cast as anything other than white but they get mad when this white-looking robot written by a japanese guy is cast as white...

@@vergil8833 So, talking about the original material (manga and anime) Major should be a little stupid (or at least really incoherent): she choose a western body but mantained her original japanese name Motoko Kusanagi. Really dumb! That's why, alongside other reasons, Motoko's artificial body is without any doubt ASIAN. Same for Ishikawa in this movie, who is... black. And to be clear, I complain about EVERY race swap in EVERY movie and about EVERY type of race swap. I can't understand changes like these: Cleopatra was from a greek family: why Neflix made her african black? But, being a huge Ghost in the Shell fan, I have to admit that I liked the movie despite of its flaws because I understand that they tried to put all the franchise (from the 2 movies to Stand Alone Complex and even some reference about the prequel Arise) in a "new" plot (re-making the 1995 anime scene by scene made no sense: that movie already exist!).

@@martinacusetti8002 They all have japanese sounding names no matter how white they look, and she didn't make the shell herself so why would it "without a doubt" be asian? This is such a weird animation debate where we for some reason have to argue who is and isn't white or asian looking as if it isn't obvious. We see from anime and manga that directly attempt to depict racial traits that "regular" anime characters from back in the day were not supposed to look asian. They're very good at depicting racial traits when they want to, but white characters always seem to look like normal anime characters. The shell in ghost in the shell looks like what they draw when they depict white people. Why do people act like it's hard to tell the difference between white and asian characters? Theres always the weird excuse that "no they're meant to be asian they just look white because thats how they draw them" is very weird. And I'm not so sure I really believe you. Sure, the Cleopatra blackwashing is very easy to oppose because it is very easily verified history, real life stuff. But quite literally every single new adaptaion of anything in the western world has race swapping where a white, usually blonde or red haired characters, are swapped to black. How often do you really care? Because that would imply that you have a problem with practically everything new. Thats not a common thing amongst someone who would argue that a very white looking robot is actually asian. Thats just one stage away from being one of those people who claim that all those blonde blue eyed anime characters are actually just asians.

@@vergil8833 She didn't make the shell herself, but she chosen the specific model (as it's said in an episode of the serie Stand Alone Complex): why chose a western body mantaining a japanese name? Does it make sense? I am an adult 37 years old person so I will not die if a movie changes some things, world has problems more real than this, but I can't understand changes like this: ok, they desired a famous actress expecting more audience, but they should have learned that a movie is more than the protagonist herself. And about the black Ishikawa? Why? And... yes, I actually have problem with pratically everything new today, so you can believe me! Last thing: I did not base my considerations about Major's body on how anime/manga characters are drawed (because it's clearly a style which make impossible define any race); my considerations about Motoko are based on the context/background/lore of the original manga and anime.
@vergil8833
@vergil8833 10 ай бұрын
@@martinacusetti8002 She has a japanese name because it's a japanese series, most things have japanese names, even tall blonde dudes. And her choosing the model doesn't say anything about it's race, she surely just chose it for its abilities. And I wholeheartedly disagree that race is impossible to define based on the animation. Many shows and movies make it pretty obvious. Take Fullmetal Alchemist for example, it is very clear that the "normal" looking anime characters are white while characters like Ling and Mei are obviously asian based on their skin tones and eye shapes. Most shows and movies that aren't particularily "moe" AKA very cutesy in it's artstyle follow that standard. White characters look like regular anime characters while black characters have dark skin and bigger lips while asian chracters have a different skin shade and more oriental eye shapes, though not always, but black hair, darker eye colors, and a different skin tone makes it obvious even when the character has big eyes. Ghost in the Shell does not have a cutesy artstyle, it's more realistic in its approach which is why eye shapes and skin tones represent race, just like in live action. Even in more subtle cases this is made clear, like in attack on titan. Mikasa is half asian and therefore has a slightly different skin tone and hair color than the other german-based characters in the show whom all look like "normal" anime characters, hence "normal" anime characters look white. They have all these blonde blue eyed characters in practically every show, it feels silly to pretend that anything about their design is japanese. Same as when you see a dark skinned character with big lips, he might have a japanese name but he is clearly black. But, I'm aware that this likely has something to do with the beauty standards of the far east really promoting surgeries meant to make people look more western, particularily eyelid and nose surgeies, but to imply that all anime characters are just weirdly white-looking asians because of this is a bit weird and uncomfortable, so I think it is way more reasonable to assume that these people have never been thinking about race like that. They've loved western media for generations, Blade Runner being the obvious inspiration for Ghost in the Shell. They've loved western movies and actors for a long time. This has of course influenced their character depictions.

As a GITS franchise obsessive here's my opinion: The whole whitewashing is BS! They were shells? Hello? The creator himself, loved this movie and was a major contributor. Therefore, why complain if the creator is pleased with the result? He wanted a parallel world and it succeeded. Noone has the right to complain. It was awesome! If you have the millions to do it better then step forward. If not, sit down and shutup

He's a bladerunner fan so I don't get why anyone ever thought that all the characters were supposed to be asian in the first place. The author made a pretty diverse cast just like what we see in bladerunner. The complaining for sure just comes from racist people who just hate white people. We see it all the time, these people cheer whenever a white character is cast as anything non-white but they complain every time theres "too many white people". They have an immoral double standard.
