Yet, I’ve found with two channels: *_The OCTOBERS_* & *_The Perfect Mix_* -> watching honest, organic first-timers watch it with no prior knowledge, no idea what’s coming, no trailers, no previews, nothing - it’s almost like experiencing it again for the 1st time. I'm retired from being a neurosurgeon's assistant. Cumberbatch nailed the operating room scene. Dr. Strange's arrogance (a common thing with neurosurgeons) always gets commented on but I heard an interesting take from a general surgeon who said they have to be that way to have balls to dig into people's brains. But there are some cool ones.

Although the one thing they always get wrong - not just in this movie, but in LOTS of movies and TV shows with hospital emergency room scenes: defibrillator paddles do not just magically cause peoples' hearts to start beating again when they've stopped. They are for defibrillation - when the heart is still beating, but the chambers are not synchronized correctly, so that blood can't flow. They have to follow that regular beating pattern to work right. That's what the defibrillator does - it gets the chambers of the heart back into rhythm. If your heart stops completely and you're flatlining, the paddles won't help you. That's what you need CPR for.

You two pointed out that Dr. Strange is a lot like a medical version of Tony Stark. You nailed it. Somewhere, some casters or producers must have picked up on something similar because both actors have also portrayed the infinitely arrogant and confident Sherlock Holmes, Benedict Cumberbatch in the British show Sherlock, and Robert Downey Jr. in the two Sherlock Holmes movies of 2009 and 2011. I haven't seen many of the episodes of Sherlock, but what I have seen has been very entertaining, and the RDJ Sherlock Holmes movies were great if you ever feel the desire to watch them.

I love how you guys caught the reference to Rhodey breaking his back when Dr Strange was in the car. (EDIT: I stand corrected, I didn’t think about the timeline before making this comment. But it’s still a reference to another MCU film, and I’m just glad they’re catching references in the dialogue. I will leave the mistake for others to see 😂) These films have SO many of those types of little cross-movie references in them. Some of them play a big part in how the films and characters evolve in the end. The more you watch the films, the more you catch those references. It’s seriously crazy how well they weaved all these films and characters together! Also, if you read the comics, you’d be amazed at how good the casting is for these films. The way they look, talk, and act is so close to the way the characters are in the comics. There is just so much magic and emotional gratification in these films. They took so much care in the writing, casting, special effects and overall execution of these films that they’re nothing short of masterful in my opinion. I can’t go on enough about how entertaining and rewarding these films were to those of us that grew up loving the characters and dreaming about the day they’d be able to make good comic films. And I think you guys do a great job reacting. Keep it up and best wishes!

Doctor Strange is one of the top 5 most powerful mystical heroes in all of marvel comics, Master of Numerous Mystic Spells, Incantation, Enchantments, Hexes, Curses, and Uses Relic sometime to aid him in battle, basically the guy can do whatever he wants but some magics come at a cost whether small or big. 53:00 The Ancient One pretty much touched on the answer to your question when she was explaining things at the start of Dr. Strange's teaching. (17:44) Long story short, they are all powerful magicians who cast actual spells. The fact that Strange has a photographic memory means he can memorize a vast pool of spells and the incantations required to pull them off. In the comics Strange will either scream these out in text bubbles or say them to himself in thought bubbles. We can assume he chants these in his head in the MCU. So each one of these are a different spell that was cast in the movie. Assume he said a quick rhymie poem in his head before all this.... Sling Ring Portal - Creation of portals to any place you visualize in your mind. (20:18, 22:20, 35:08) Ruby Rings of Raggadorr - Manifested energy in the form of mandalas used as either shields (28:23) or projectiles (2:36) Astral Projection - Your life force paranormally active and attentive while your physical body is in a state of inactivity. (22:30) Mirror Dimension - The casting of a parallel dimension that mimics the surroundings of the area where the spell is cast. Normally, only the sorcerer who casts the Mirror Dimension can alter the surroundings within it. But Kaecilius became able to alter things both outside of the Mirror Dimension and inside of it after submitting to Dormammu. Lastly there's The Time Stone. With it, you are OP from a time perspective. Think of something time related you'd want to do and you can do it.

_SO, HERE WE GO, FRIENDS! -_ *The interdimensional, parallel reality, space-time continuum, alternate existence multiverse explanation:* The fundamental idea is that there is an infinite number of universes (just like ours); many of which have alternate versions of people & things from our very own. I’m an engineer on earth. In another universe, I’m still me. . .just as a cowboy. In another, it’s me again. . .but I’m an OnlyFans model. If I met myself in any of these other universes, yeah - we’d be really different from one another. . .but also really, really the same, fundamental person at our core. Oftentimes, when that happens in these stories/movies, each one draws a little knowledge or experience or power from the other when they meet & use it back home in their own universe: In Jet Li’s *_”THE ONE”,_* there were 125 different versions of himself in the different multiverse universes & everytime one of them died (or were killed by the villain), he (& the remaining versions of himself) got exponentially stronger. When it was down to the final 2, they were basically superheroes & no one on earth could understand how he was able to do the things he did. In Marvel’s *_AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D.,_* ((no spoilers)) - there is a similar storyline that emerges at some point. In Marvel’s *SPIDERMAN: INTO THE MULTIVERSE,* similar action. In *_DOCTOR STRANGE,_* the masters are simply tapping into those other universes & drawing upon its “energies” to become more powerful “superhero” types on earth. It would be like if you were going to race someone and, b/c I’m not racing at the moment, I let you use my car engine, too; attach my car engine to your car engine so that you’re now twice as powerful and twice as fast. What if you could tap into 10 car’s engine power for your next race? 20 cars? You’d be able to travel at the speed of light soon😅So, that’s basically what they’re doing - just borrowing energy, power, etc from all these different alternate universes at once. . .to the extent that they can fold matter, manipulate space & alter time. If that just made you more confused, my bad🤦🏽‍♂️😅

While Tony Stark has always been about science and technology, Dr. Strange has always been about magic. When I was a kid in the 70s reading my brother's Marvel comic collection, Dr. Strange was always one of my favorite titles. The world of magic and other universes has always been very psychedelic, spiritual, and philosophical (it started in the 60s and 70s, so I guess that's not a huge surprise). As a used-to-be comic nerd, I thought the movie did a good job of trying to portray this, but it can be extremely difficult to understand any of it for people coming in cold like the two of you. I thought you did a great job going with the flow; great reaction!

Another great reaction from you three (dog included). 😀My mind was blown the first time I saw Dr. Strange in 3D in the theater, I'd seen time travel movies before, but never in the way it was done in the third act of this movie. Plus how he played Dormammu was amazing also. If you want to see who gave the crazy look to comics like Dr. Strange & Thor, look up Steve Ditko & Jack Kirby online. Kirby worked with Stan Lee right from the beginning at Marvel as the artist, & he's probably had more influence on the look of comics in his lifetime more than just about anyone else. Can't wait for the next reaction!! Cheers!!

Ahh we've reached Doctor Strange! I knew you would both enjoy it! As far as any confusion goes, it's hard to explain it in full detail in a comment but the barebones you must know is that due to his photographic memory, he is able to learn and use spells quickly and effectively. Many of these spells we saw in the movie - astral projection, "magical" weapon creation, sling ring portals, "defensive" spell shields and of course the use of the mirror dimension. These are just some of many. Of course, the Sorcerer Supreme (in this case the Ancient One) is usually well versed in these spells and their duty (as mentioned in the movie) is to protect the Time Stone as well many world threats. A fun fact as well - Strange was looped with Dormammu for mannyyyyy years even though to those on Earth, only a few minutes passed. During those years he mastered his sorcery powers even more while "fighting" with Dormammu. This is why by the end of this movie (including his interaction with Thor), he's a lot more refined in his knowledge and skill. P.S. - You may know the actress playing the Ancient One from Narnia. She plays the white witch :)

If you guys have already seen "The Exorcist," as a follow-up in the genre you'll want to watch "Constantine." While they're different, this movie reminds me of that for you. As for the comics, you'll find the origin of Dr. Strange a bit different, but also similar to this movie representation. They actually made a great attempt in the movie to replicate the portrayal of magic in the comics, but Ditko's graphic imagination is really hard to duplicate, so they added some FX that are clearly capitalizing on what is easier to do digitally, like the city bending FX and fractals. As for dimensional manipulation, I don't think there's much there you need to understand. It's basically just traditional magic spells. However, if you imagine that there are say 8 or 10 dimensions along the nature of space and time, and that we have the ability to move in different directions of space and one direction in time, then if you knew how to manipulate other such "structural" dimensions, you could do all sorts of things ... perceiving and manipulating reality in ways that would seem impossible for someone who doesn't know how to do that. Possibly part of your confusion comes from thinking of dimensions as alternate worlds, planes, or realities, which is of course another valid view on the idea of dimensions. There's both kinds. In the comics, Dormammu is more like the evil Sorcerer Supreme of another reality that has some aspects that are similar to ours, like humanoid inhabitants, but it also integrates space and magic in weird ways. You'd have to see the old comic books to grasp it, probably.

How was it portrayed in the comics? By the same man who gave Spider-Man his costume and who plotted his early stories. Steve Ditko was one of my favorite comicbook artists when I was young. Doctor Strange was a visually "weird" comic, but it needed to be. This movie did an excellent job of translating Ditko's vision of spell-casting and strange dimensions to the big screen. As a Marvel fan since the '60s, this one made me as happy as seeing the first Sam Raimi "Spider-Man" film with Toby McGuire. And as important as Stan Lee is to the MCU...Steve Ditko, Jack Kirby, and the "Bullpen"(as he called them) are right there with him. 'Nuff said.

@OldRoy I'm with you my friend. I bought my first Marvel comic book for 10 cents in 1966. We didn't have much money so I had two newspaper routes so I could buy subscriptions to all the Marvel comic books. I had hundreds of Marvel comics (lost over time) and my three favorite characters were Spiderman, the Silver Surfer, and Dr. Strange.

In the comics, it was explained as magic. But the MCU has described magic as tapping into the multiverse. Basically, other universes that have different physical properties. The comics were drawn very psychedelic. It was the 60s after all. Dr. Strange is even featured on Pink Floyd's second album cover. "A Saucerful of Secrets." That should tell you everything you need to know about him.

You asked a few movies ago which superhero you would want to be, not your favorite but like what powers you would like to have? I would want either Dr. Strange or Wanda. Magic from the MCU is so cool and so versatile. I also love the ending of this and it's why I love magic in most fiction because the best way to defeat your enemies isn't always raw power, its intelligence. Dr. Strange stood no chance against Dormomu but he out thought him and beat him with intelligence.

The spell Doctor Strange cast in the dark dimension works because the loop is limited to only Strange himself since the dark dimension exists outside of time. Dormammu therefore does not get looped and experiences (and remembers) the entire fight.

Fitting that you found Dr. Strange's abilities hard to understand as you were also thrown by Wanda. Both characters are part of the witches/wizards of Marvel, which can be thought of similar to Harry Potter - it's magic (spells, enchantments, etc.), so there are laws to what can happen but.. it's also magic so what borrowed powers/items do what can get quite extreme. For a while, Strange was the most powerful character and had to be nerfed in comics similar to how Superman got toned down because the power creep in comics got too much.

Stan Lee is reading a famous book entitled Doors of Perception by Aldous Huxley. It was a pretty influential book on western thinking concerning psychedelics, mysticism and metaphysics. Although Dr. Strange became a popular character in the late 1960s among the college crews, neither Stan and his co-creator Steve Ditko ( responsible for incredible strange mindscapes) were advocates for drug experimentation.

One thing that always bothered me at the end of this movie is why Strange doesn't just use the Eye of Agamotto to fix his watch and his hands. They show us that it has the power to un-eat an apple and return a missing page that was torn from a book and could even undo all the damage Kaecilius had done so it should be able to turn back time on his watch and hands as well.
