I just wanna say for those trying to help with the 6-button issue for MK Arcade Edition, holding the mode button to switch the controller over to 3-button still doesn’t work. A working 3-button controller is needed. Thanks for the suggestion however.

Thats weird. I don’t have any issues with 6 button controllers. I wonder if your cart is programmed weird. Theres similar issues with the version that came to dreamcast, but it’s kinda buggy regardless. The 6 button should be ideal as the mode button is supposed to be used to switch from scorpion to sub zero moves when using reptile.

Just to prove my point I commented on one of the first videos of this channel about the Genesis version being the best when he was playing the arcade version and one or two people replied that it was pretty rough. My comment was very biased so I guess it would warrant such a response. I actually had a Super NES growing up, not a Genesis, but an old childhood friend had it on Genesis and he knew all the tricks and cheats. I think we rented MK2 for SNES (yes, I didn't own the game) when he stayed overnight one time and it wasn't the same for him, which ruined it for me. And from what I hear the SNES version was the closest thing to the arcade version. I get it that this video isn't about the original Genesis MK2 or the SNES version or even the arcade version, but the nostalgia factor is still there.

I have restored more than a dozen original Sega Genesis controllers with an extremely high success rate. If you disassemble your 3 button controllers to clean, use isopropyl alcohol. Wipe down the circuit board where all the buttons contact. Soak the rubber pads in some isopropyl for a few minutes and then take them out and press them down (darkside down) hard on a strong paper towel, while pressing them down, slide them along the paper towel until they no longer leave a dark skid mark. I use a rough paper towel with minimal lint. If the pads do get linty, then more alcohol and a cotton swap would help for a final cleaning. If the shell and buttons are dirty, I will take the time now to wash them with warm, soapy water. Allow everything to dry and reassemble the controller. If the rubber part appears heavily worn, I tend to select the most worn pad to go on the least used button like Start. While the 3 button shell remained the same, depending on the country of origin and probably the date of manufacture, you will notice variants in the circuit board and especially the d-pad design. The metal ball bearing design appears to the superior design. If you have the model with a d-pad that rests on a plastic knob that presses directly against the circuit board, I have found this design to fail as the plastic knob wears out and a divot gets worn into the board. This decreased clearance makes for wonky diagonal inputs and potentially opposed directional input simultaneously. When this happens, a tiny pad can be added made from a tiny cut square of an index card and some masking/painter's tape placed directly on the circuit board. This acts as a spacer and restores the original height and function of this d-pad design. Try this method on your non-working controllers before purchasing replacements.

Wouldn't IPA dry out the membranes? I just cleaned mine with dish soap and warm water same as the shell and buttons but I need to try that pivot riser I've heard similar effects for using hole punch protectors under action buttons.

The original MK2 cart for the Genesis was only 24megs, the carts were able to hold up to 40megs. Sculpture Software didn't have the budget to include more content on the cartridges, so they had to cut a lot out from the original Arcade version. Acclaim had the same budget, but they were able to do a much better job with cutting out content for the SNES.

You seem to have them mixed up. Sculpture Software did the SNES version, and Probe did the Genesis version. Acclaim was just the publisher. I had the SNES version and played for a whole year, until the PlayStation came out in 1995. Great times!

Smoke looks like he has body odor, not smoke coming off him, the Kombat tomb stage looks more black and white, pasty, and doesn't dark. Other stages look interesting, but the Sega genesis doesn't do too well trying to be dark. But I like what has been done here. I'll admit I have never been a Genesis fan. The video and sound chip is lacking and much weaker for the time it was made.

Regarding the MK1 arcade, and the 6 button issue. I ran into a similar issue where the start button would not work on my wired hyperkin 6 button. I then connected my retrobit 6 button wireless, and that did work. I don’t have a genuine Sega 6 button to test. Maybe this helps.

I had two 3 button genesis controllers with various issues. Buttons and directionals not working. I just opened them up, cleaned all the plastics and rubber membranes with water and alcohol. Both controls work perfectly now. It’s was supper easy and quick.

@@BushyStallion you got do a deep clean sometimes. Soapy water with a toothbrush for the shell, buttons and d-pad. Check to see if the membranes are ripped. Then clean the membranes with isopropyl alcohol and q-tips. Then make sure you place the membranes back on the board perfectly when putting back together. Good luck. Hope you get them fixed.

This really is better than the original and is the only version I know of that has the endings from the arcade in their original resolution. It also adds endings for the three new characters and getting to play as smoke with his own ending makes this a must play.

I have that same cart of the MK Arcade Edition and I use my Genesis 6-button arcade stick. Works perfectly. I haven’t tried my 6-button controller but I can say that it does indeed have 6-button support. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I’ll show what it does with the 6 button controller in a video as well the 3 button. Menus work, gameplay does not. Pushing left causes the high punch button to activate as well as left. Down causes twitch blocking like I’m pushing a button on a turbo controller, etc etc.

But when picking Reptile or Noob Saibot the Mode button switches between the Sub-Zero and Scorpion move set. On the arcade stick, at least.

1:40 Well the original MK2 cart had an options menu to manually select a 6-button controller, actually a step I forgot about from bitd heh. Funny a while back I was saying repro cart makers should use modded content instead of just making the old originals again and a few years later they started doing that finally, awesome.😁 4:50 Kega and GENS are emulators so that's just some extra bits turned on to make sure it works properly in those. I guess you don't use many emulators but quite a few ROM files over the years only work in certain emulators Eg. NES pirate fighting game ROMs are rife with that complication.

You should try Mortal Kombat II Unlimited - Enhanced Colors (last version is 1.0), it takes the MKIIU hack while making the colors closer to the original arcade. Regarding MK1, the hack to go is Mortal Kombat Arcade Edition Enhanced (current version is 2.0), which fixes and reworks several things (graphics, colors and animations) in relation to MKAE v1.0a.

If you hold the Mode button on the 6 button controller when powering on the Genesis, I think it forces it into 3 button mode...but that still may not work, there are just a handful of games that will not work at all with the 6 button controller

Hey just a recommendation to try: Mortal Kombat 2 Remix Mugen imo the best MK game ever made; it's SO good. All 3 hidden characters are selectable, with moves and combos and fatalities Every character has at least one extra move, and one extra fatality the combo system from MK3 has been implemented, but the combos are nicely more simple than some of the more complicated combos in mk3 Can pull up move, combo & fatality list via pause menu during game at any time Native widescreen Graphics are beautifully enhanced. New sound effects, and somehow some new announcer lines It's absolutely incredible Only thing is: its only on PC It seems like you mostly focus on Genesis / consoles; But man this game is so good; coulsnt recommend it enough! Love these videos btw

MK arcade edition just had a new update to work w various third party controllers. I think it does work w a standard Genesis six button, but the newest updated version should work w everything. Lol it’s all good it’s the weekend after all. I did pick up a working 3 button controller for this yesterday, and played through it.. I’ll show in a later video what exactly happens when I use my 6 button controller with it 👊🏼 hope you’re not hung over today lol

The love for snes game till unlimited mk2 and better than vanilla mk2. Mk2 unlimited is just like the arcade quality for sega genesis.

You should definitely try more MK hacks like this. I believe there was an Ultimate MK3 hack for both Super NES and Sega Genesis with all the characters and stages from the arcade brought into the game.

You said you bought this from Hong Kong? I'm surprised there was nowhere closer to purchase this cartridge. Shipping couldn't have been cheap... how long did it actually take to arrive from the day you bought it?

It took around 4 weeks.. and shipping was reasonable, overall I’m happy with the purchase. It could have been shipped from the States but the prices were all pretty high on eBay, this version actually ended up being the cheapest.

Kega and Gens are Sega Genesis emulators. Someone modded the game into this version here and put it on a cart. I do not know why they would put emulators on the cart unless they needed it to load the game

Probably not needed in the physical edition but for compatibilities issues in the rom i guess? Perhaps if you're using gens while having it set as kega would make some things don't work properly and such

I’d never heard of it either until I got it lol only within the last year had someone mentioned MK2 Unlimited to me, as for this Dark Edition this one is completely new to me.
