Better Than The Vampire Diaries | The Originals Review

In this The Originals review, I briefly go over reasons why the show is better than the Vampire Diaries, which the Originals is a spin off of. Klaus and Elijah were my favorites on the Vampire Diaries. I'm glad they received their own show, as they were the best characters whenever they were on screen. Hats off to Joseph Morgan for his portrayal of Klaus, as well as the rest of the cast.

Camille, Klaus, and Marcel. Also, Elijah, Haley, and Jackson. There are love triangles, but they don't really focus on romantic relationships the way The Vampire Diaries did. The Originals focuses on the plot, and those romantic relationships are either part of it, or they are slightly insignificant. In The Vampire Diaries, they would often shift focus from the plot to those relationships, which was so dramatic because many of those romances were between main characters that had dated other main characters.

Totally, it's way better, i also like the fact that Klaus who was the big bad didn't get aways so easy with what he did. People called him out came at him and they showed that NOLA was a better place without him or his family. Unlike Damon and Stefan, he was still hated by Vampires humans and Werewolve when he died, the only people who cared about him were his family, and he died along with Elijah none of them knew if their were going to after they died, but were ready to face them. Damon got forgiven too easely even in the last season, and stefan and everyone acted like his life was better because stefan was in it.

I'm glad they didn't simply make Klaus into a good guy. It was a work in progress. But I hate the whole red door concept with Elijah, and wish he remained as he did in season 1. Damon frequently hurt and killed whoever he wanted and people acted as if nothing happened. When any of the Originals did something, no one let them off the hook. The whole show was basically based on the fact that they were not forgiven by their enemies. That's why it's the better show.

I just found it repetitive in that they were taken, locked away, too many body swaps early on and just witchy stuff for most of it. I liked characters like Camille. I got to the point where I just wasn't into it. I wanted to really like it. Many people say it's great and I'm so glad they love it and I will finish Season 5. Just not something I will watch for a second time. Everyone finds different shows interesting. It would be no fun if we all like the same things.

The originals is definitely a better show than the vampire diaries I really enjoyed seeing klaus evolve in the show to him falling in love with camille to becoming a father I actually like him with camille than with caroline I really loved the other character developments of hailey and kol and the introduction of freya glad the show ended after 5 seasons

Klaus had the best character arc of all, and Camille was better. She was scared, but not of Klaus, and would tell him the truth while also being compassionate. Caroline felt forced.

One aspect that makes The Originals better for me, and is not mentioned by anyone, is its vocabulary! As someone who has acquired English as a foreign language, The Originals was like thesaurus for me.

That's an interesting point. Vocabulary isn't something I watch for, but for years, I do what I was taught in Elementary School. I hear a word I don't know, I look it up.

The Originals has a more interesting premise. Family is more important than love triangles. And tvd took that course when Nina left. I think the most important problem in the Originals is that deteriorated when the writers decided to make Legacies. Even the actors indirectly admitted that they were more invested than the writers in season 5.

TVD was invested in relationships and love triangles before Nina even left, the way I remember. The Originals fell off on Season 4. Season 5 was almost unbearable.

@@reelthought3867 I agree. I couldn't bear seasons 5 and 6 of tvd and I stopped there. And it's really sad because I really used to love it till season 3. I hate when that happens. The Originals got worse,in season 5 for me. It's like the writers didn't give a damn and wronged many characters who deserved a better or more inspiring ending.

@@aggelikhzt8014Season 5 wasn't my favourite, Season 6 was quite good at the start. I found Elena so ****ing annoying by then and was so glad she was not in 7 and 8 till the end. My preference would have been for them to kill her off when she left and let Damon move on. Enzo was someone I thought should have died not long after he and Damon found one another again. It was like they'd hired the actor for x amount of time and didn't know what the hell to do with him. Kept trying to find a romantic relationship for him and all of a sudden he's the love of Bonnie's life.

The character Klaus Mikaelson was originally meant to be killed off in The Vampire Diaries (2009), but the character's ever increasing popularity granted him survival and a spin-off show. Nathaniel Buzolic, the actor portraying the role of Kol Mikealson, auditioned and was almost cast as Stefan Salvatore in The Vampire Diaries (2009). Joseph Morgan is married to Persia White who played Bonnie's Mother in The Vampire Diaries (2009). Nathan Parsons who plays the werewolf Jackson, left the show during season one to play a vampire on HBO's True Blood (2008) only to return to his werewolf character in season two after the series ending of "True Blood". Only one of the Mikaelson children is American: Riley Voelkel. Joseph Morgan is English, Claire Holt and Nathaniel Buzolic are Australian, Daniel Gillies is from Canada and Casper Zafer is a British actor. Devon Allowitz is also an American, but he's excluded since his character Henrik has only appeared in archive footage in the series. Leah Pipes (Camille O'Connell) was the victim of cyber bullying for the duration of her time on the show because she played Klaus' love interest. Fans wanted Klaus with either Caroline Forbes (Candice Accola from The Vampire Diaries (2009) to whom Klaus had a previous attraction) or Hayley Marshall (Phoebe Tonkin). Daniel Gillies was born in Canada but raised in New Zealand. In the TV series Saving Hope he speaks in his original accent, whereas in this series he uses a neutral American accent, except during flashbacks where he sounds slightly British 'La Fleur De Lys' is a symbol on the logo of The Originals and represents French royalty. This was chosen carefully for the show as the basis of the storyline is the Mikaelson family trying to rule the French Quarter of New Orleans. Name meanings: Esther and Mikael are names in the Old Testament as is Rebekah. Freya is a Scandinavian name for Goddess of Love, Fertility and Beauty. Finn is an Irish name for "Fair" and also a Nordic name meaning "Man from Finland". Elijah is Hebrew for "My God Is Yahwe". Niklaus and Kol are both Slavic names meaning "Victory of the people". Which are also common in America without the meaning. Henrik is a Dutch name that means home ruler. Both Claire Holt (Rebekah Mikaelson) and Nathaniel Buzolic (Kol Mikaelson) were recurring characters on Pretty Little Liars (2010). Alice Evans (Esther) plays Daniel Gillies' (Elijah) mother, but in real life, she's only 10 years older than him Joseph Morgan (Klaus), Phoebe Tonkin (Hayley), Nathaniel Buzolic (Kol), Claire Holt (Rebekah) and Daniel Gillies (Elijah) have previously worked together in The Vampire Diaries (2009). In an interview Leah Pipes (Camille O'Connell) stated that in one take of Klaus and Cami's second bar scene in 1x18, Joseph Morgan got so into the scene that he kissed her on the mouth, which took her by surprise. Julie Plec initially intended to kill off Josh at the end of season 1, but the writers threatened to never forgive her if she did so. Phoebe Tonkin has played a mermaid, a werewolf, a witch, a vampire and (now) a hybrid in her time in acting. She says she would rather play those characters than ordinary ones. Rebekah has the longest connected sireline among the Originals. Klaus is technically back at zero since he was unlinked to his sireline, while Elijah, Kol, and Finn's sirelines don't exist anymore. In the trailer for The Originals season 4 Klaus reads the poem 'A Poison Tree' by William Blake (as a voice-over) to describe the relationship between him and Marcel. This poem is also used as a voice-over in season 1 episode 6 'A Poison Tree' to describe Klaus' relationship with Eljiah and his relationship with Marcel. After Camille and Klaus finally kissed in season 3, many toxic viewers on twitter have sent Leah Pipes (Camille) death threats. It is this reason why the actress has decided to leave the show and the character was killed off. Many suspected these toxic fans are shippers of Klaus' first romance from The Vampire Diaries, Caroline. Klaus Mikaelson is a hybrid. This makes him both werewolf and vampire, which means he is still technically alive and can have children.

Certainly, The Originals series is much better than TVD. The Originals have values, story, excellent character construction, and a great ending. Not just diaries without values, love triangles, and everyone sleeping with everyone, bad and contradictory characters building, and a boring ending.

Hands down THE ORIGINALS is 1000 times better than TVD. I agree with you on all the points but one thing I don’t agree with you is where you said they kind of repeat the whole “you won’t see me by your side” thing and then come together the next day. The truth is that’s the whole point of the show. Just like hayley said to stefan, “they hurt each other more than anyone but they are vicious when it comes to protecting each other.” So no, it’s not a petty thing.

It is petty, whether it's part of the story or not. I understand it. I have a brother, and growing up, there were plenty of times we didn't get along, but he's still my brother. This show is so melodramatic about it all the time, and the reconciliation is predictable because it happens frequently.

@@reelthought3867 I'm with you on that one: tried to watch 5 minutes of LEGACIES and couldn't. It's terrible. Take all the stuff you didn't like in TVD, multiply it by 1,000 = LEGACIES.

There was a point where I couldn't decided who was more annoying Davina or Cami, however it is pretty sad how Davina didn't have any real family, I think they touched on her real family once, but she had all that magic, yet never wanted to look for any of her real family? They for sure built Marcel up to be a big bad only to have him show his true strength in like 2 episodes, Marcel fought Aya harder as a normal vamp than he fought Klaus as a New Original, I don't understand why they made him a new original only to make him a backseat weak vamp in season 4 and 5. They always did Rebekah dirty, they let her get cooked by baby vamps all the time. BS way to kill off Hayley, for all the times someone had their hand in Hayley's chest ready to rip out her heart for the writers to kill her off by suicided in total BS, it would have been a cool plot twist to have had Hayley be the one to kill Klaus off to save Hope in the end, Elijah should have already been dead from Marcel as revenge for killing him, Davina, killing Thierry, and being exiled in season 1 or 2 I agree this show pissed me off a lot but I think it was way better than most other Vampire TV shows or movies. I believe Joseph Morgan's great acting made Klaus there's not another soul alive who could have played him better. For me Vampire stories started with Interview with the Vampire and Blade, I think The Originals if cut down to a Movie without all the fluff and plot wholes would be a top tier Vampire Movie.

The originals is so good ....the acting is so good! Characters, so good. People still talking about the show today. Plus theres people that watched the show that i wouldn't even think would be interested in the show which i shouldnt be surprised because the show is at its core embarrasingly relatable.

The Originals was a decent show to me, but far better than The Vampire Diaries. The actors in this had the advantage of having already been in these roles for a few seasons in The Vampire Diaries, so that just made it better. Pulling the focus away from the nonsensical romance was a big win, however, like most shows, it became horrible in the long run. I was not a fan of seasons 4 or 5. Still worth giving it a try though.

Oh yes absolutely the originals is definitely way better than the vampire diaries and here’s why 1 the main character of that show didn’t end up leaving besides Klaus was a way better main character than both Stefan and Elena 2 we didn’t have to deal with any hated characters for multiple seasons 3 not nearly we many seasons were as bad as the vampire diaries besides season 6 and 8 totally bad I hated them both Besides I should’ve definitely joined the originals I could’ve played their long lost cousin joel Russell perfect name for my character

I know a lot of people prefer TO - but I started to watch and was bored out of my mind. With TVD I was immediately interested and by the end of the Pilot episode I wanted to know more about the relationship between Stefan and Damon and how the other characters would develop. With TO the only characters i remotely liked were Rebekah and Klaus. I found it slow and plodding and I know I won't watch the series again, whereas I have watched the whole of TVD 7 times already and could seriously start watching again because I found the characters more engaging.
