Hey ya'll, I'm Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm
Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you'll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.
There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart - to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we've learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you're here.

My husband thought I had a sticker/t-shirt worthy quote. He was asking permission to toss some peppers that I had on the counter and new used so they were spoiled. I told him, “Good intentions make great compost.” It reminded me of your huge rutabaga that went to the worms.

I learned to ride horses at 3 years old to a really sweet, old horse named Bill. He was 27 years old and lived to 30 years. He is a precious memory I still carry with me. He trusted me, I trusted him. That is, until he accidently knocked me into a water bucket in the barn 😂 But man, I love those senior animals. They are sweet and they love big.

Stacy from @Off Grid with Doug and Stacy taught me so much about raising Guineas. She told me that it may sound crazy, but leave your Guineas locked in a coop for FIVE MONTHS. Yes, FIVE MONTHS, and I didn't lose a single Guinea out of 15 newly hatched keets, and they came back to their coop to roost every single night. I eventually gave them to a friend because as adults, they can dig some ankle breaking holes, and they started to wonder off to the church next door and I didn't want them digging up the church property. But they were so fun, and funny and such a joy to have.

I hatched guineas. They grew up and started beating up the chickens. They wound up in freezer camp. Yes, they are LOUD, and use to follow me everywhere... They would fly over my house, get in the garden and pick all the greens, etc. Good luck! I miss them and think some times that the chickens should have gone to freezer camp instead. I'm feeding 10 hens and lucky to get 4 eggs a day. My ducks lay better.

Lady would be a beautiful addition to your classroom if you still have her by the time you start inviting folks out for classes! I can just envision a small class of kids grooming her and loving on her, while learning horse parts and taking care of horses. I taught horseback riding lessons during college to kids at a Boy's and Girls camp year around ages 8-18, and we took it 2 broodmares who were only ever used for breeding and not for riding. They turned out to be the absolute BEST gals for our littlest ones who were in our Intro to Horses class. They just loved all the attention they got! 🧡🧡🧡 Good luck on being there for Lady's next chapter in life!

My last batch of meat birds (cornish cross), were the most foraging birds I have ever raised. Every time when I moved the chicken tractor, they were all about looking for and chasing the crickets, spiders, grasshoppers etc, it became a game. Was quite comical.

With our beginning flock of keets we supplied them with white millet (it's like crack to them) and ring a cow bell every time we feed it. We trained them to come in the coop to the sound of the bell every evening (cause that's where we give the millet), if they roost in your trees the owls will get them. You could actually just train them to come in your barn and roost up in there. Remember, guineas mate for life unless something happens to a mate. We were lucky enough that an even amount of each sex survived them wanting to roost in a tree one night and the owls struck. When we have retrieved their eggs for hatching we have had better luck putting them under a chicken hen then letting them hatch them themselves. I put them under a broody 5-7 days before putting any chicken eggs under her and they hatch at the same time. Eventually they integrate with the guinea flock if they have access. Sorry for being windy, I love my guineas and they are trainable.

I have found leeches to be very very helpful on hoof abscesses, better than antibiotics and vets medicine. We put them on the coronet and the lower part of the pastern, 3-4 leeches for a foot (that also works extremely well in laminitis). You leave them on until they get they are full and then they fall off. Usually the abscess will disappear or come out within one or two days, and only one session with the leeches is needed.

Growing up on a large farm, we tried guineas multiple times. They stayed on the farm, but not close to the house. They wandered down to the ponds, swamps, wooded areas and unfortunately would get eaten by alligators and other predators. If they had stayed closer they would have been a lot safer . We also had chickens that were always there (it was extremely rare for one of our chickens to be butchered) but they didn’t keep the guineas close even though the chickens, who were also free range (decades before free range was a thing, lol), stayed close. I liked them , though. I hope yours do great.

When I raise guineas, I like to grab the keets the day the mamas bring them out for food. Then I trap mama in a have a heart live trap and put the lot in a brooder for 4 weeks. Sometimes I leave mama outside the brooder. She usually hangs around till the babies are 'safe' to release and then they are automatically part of the flock. Pretty much the only way I have ever managed to keep them alive. I'm down to 12 from 22 adults that I had at the end of Spring.

We rescued 2 puppies from our neighbor’s unwanted litter… at first we were “puppy sitting” and they got seriously sick the next day. We rushed them to the vet (our neighbor didn’t have the funds to help them) because we thought they had Parvo, but it ended up they had hookworms- the worst our vet had seen on the slide! So we got all the meds and tried our best to get them healthy. One made it but the runt didn’t 😢 we already had 3 dogs but we couldn’t let the other go! Our neighbor told us that all other puppies in the litter died (they had 7 all together, only ours lived). I wish we could have helped all of them 😢 our other female dogs are Daisy and Lily so we had named the pups Rose and Violet… violet is the one who survived and she is the sweetest baby ever! Rose is buried in our yard and we are going to plant a rose bush to remember her. My 14 yr old son took it really hard 🥺
