Butker is a pretty good kicker for the KC Chiefs (not a high profile player and makes about $5M/yr. Perhaps a bit more this year. Not a lot for an NFL player). fyi. This is about freedom of speech & misquoting his statement that women should stay home over pursuing a working career. A large number of people want the Chiefs to release him from the team for this speech he gave. Not surprisingly, the Chiefs are not caving in to that pressure and are likely to support him going forward. No one has to agree w/ his views. Just respect his right to have his own. See statements by his teammates like Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelsey, & Head coach Andy Reid, along w/ the KC Chiefs & the NFL for more. Note: other teams, like the Chargers, have opposed and Butker's speech (last I heard, though I haven't looked any further than that headline statement).

It's kind of shameful for a man to be speaking of sex and pregnancy (even if indirectly) at their college graduation when they are celebrating scholastic achievement. It used to be these were private conversations and he laid it all out in the open to their embarrassment in front of their parents, friends, and the world. He does not know these women so he aggregated the message to all of them as if they had a common destiny. He could have gotten his message across without being so personal and so targeted toward women. He does not not know nor should he presume their callings. Imagine the message about careers are great, but so also is family for men and women. He did not have the right to be so forward with them, and it became clear he viewed them all from a particular lens that is different from men whose careers are supported and applauded.

Someone else I don't at all. What he said makes sense from a catholic point of view. Yet when we strip down his words, we can see that they don't fully align with the word of God. By all means get inspired by the speech, but please be very careful how you absorb the catholic stance. The age old saying comes to mind " the devil is in the detail". TTFN

He was raised in Decatur, Georgia so you would expect some of the Baptist and Evangelical creeds would seep into his Catholicism. So as a devout Catholic standing in front of a true Catholic school giving this address is nothing to be upset about. If you think about his words they translate to "do not be embarrassed about your choices and live your life as you choose." I am a firm believer in the separation of church and state and freedom of speech. It goes both ways though and the banning of nativity scenes is just as irritating. That said, the part that is threatening is when in the name of religion, we pass laws that affect other people who are not a part of our particular tribe. This is crossing the line. I feel you should lose your tax-exempt status the moment you do more than hand out voting guides. It is why our ancestors came to this country. By the way I was raised protestant, left organized religion, but keep God in my heart where I think God belongs.

💯 This issue became a left/right conversation so quickly that Christians are defending everything he said without recognizing that it is theologically different than many Christian denominations. Tread lightly!
