I like how you said that 3 hours is sort of your end goal of time to concentrate on your main goal/job. I work(ed) 40 hours a week at a desk job as a programmer and I definitely can get most everything I need to get done in 3 hours, give or take, but have to find ways to fill in the rest of my workday. I'm not lazy, but I do notice if I try to code for more than 4 or 5 hours in a single day, my stress goes up and my ability to write good code starts to plummet. Anyways, I wish we could get rid of the 40 hour work week. I think it's old and antiquated. I'm not lazy, I just think it's stupid forcing people to work 8 hours, 5 days a week. Most everyone I work with wastes so much company time on social media and filling in their time with other things. Think everyone would be so much happier and productive if we just did even 30 hours a week (6 hour days).
@0715yt3 жыл бұрын
I’m hearing about this a lot with office jobs, that people fill in a lot of time just for the sake of being at the office. Companies really need to start trying six hour days more often
@dakotarizza45483 жыл бұрын
Well i work 65 hours a week driving truck and delivering lumber, one of the most physically demanding jobs i've ever worked and i have a long history of ranching and trade work. We hate office people, they're so worried about saving time so they cut corners. A single mistake for them requires a reprint, but because of that mistake we have to work 3 hours in the freezing cold or blazing heat to unfuck their accidental delivery amounts. Yall need more time in the office lmao
@brett84c3 жыл бұрын
@@dakotarizza4548 I can empathize with that, granted, you can't blame ALL office people for the select few that make your job harder. I still stand by the fact that something about working in an office can be really mentally taxing and draining, as I'm sure being a truck driver does, but probably more on the physical side of things. Either way, people should be careful with their physical and mental health. People that work too much end up with lots of problems, but I also can see how not working enough can just be laziness. I bought one with the same idea stated in the video, the phone sits directly below the monitor. That was a terrible idea, like, I receive a work message out of working hours (while playing a videogame for example), and I see the WhatsApp notification and the name of the contact, and automatically feel stressed, and I say to myself, I'm not gonna even watch the message until working hours, but it is there, blinking at me, so after like 10 minutes I end up picking up my phone. I'm changing the place of that charger, now.
@tntori50794 жыл бұрын
I tried his wireless charger idea for a different approach. I tend to constantly worry about my phone, so if it's not near me I will turn around or move my chair to check it. I tried putting a charger up so I had it in my vision. I thought taking a second to glance at it would be less distracting than moving to find it. It kinda worked, but not really. Instead I got a smart watch (or fitbit if that's too much money). Now my phone can go anywhere and there's no anxiety to check it. If I get and email for school, my watch will vibrate and I'll know. Also, smartwatches (and fitbits) can be set up so ONLY the important stuff comes through. It only goes off for email and text. Added bonus having it alert that I reached my step count for the day just makes me feel that much more accomplished.

This long term focus is called flow (when you're in the moment and not focused on anything else). I am a designer so i know first hand as i do it every day, and it's like meditation and funnily it actually has the same effect on your brain as meditation. Things like notifications, too many tabs open, a messy desktop, even hoarding items instead of throwing them out, a messy room, not doing things you know you should, will add mental weight and you will be worn out all the time. When you clear these from your life, you feel very light and peaceful.

@ohimark90163 жыл бұрын
0:56 Hey I do this. Someone called it "productive procrastination" and I feel like that's a good term for it. For example "Hey, let me start my own online business so I don't have to go through the hassle of finding a salaried position that I know would help me infinitely faster than something online." A quote from Stephen Covey that highlights this concept: "The enemy of the best is often the good." Solution. Catch yourself when you're justifying and train yourself to switch to the most important task immediately when that thought crosses your mind. If you let that thought crop dust your mind, that pesticide is gonna going to kill your impulse control and then 10 years will pass by where all of a sudden you wonder how and why things went wrong. Because when it comes to self improvement, or life in general really, if you aren't improving, if you aren't moving up, you're dying.

How your physical environment can influence your decision making and behaviour, being able to plan/predetermine what you end up doing. For myself this was having a stack of books I intended to read on my playstation so once I got bored I’d read, while I was reading I’d know that I had a lot more to read which motivated me to read more. A step further would be to remove the playstation from the room. My mum hated the pile of books and now I read less because of it xD Highly recommend the book for anybody interested in small changes with big effects :)

I always make myself a to do list every morning just so I can have an idea on what I need to get done in each day. I think it’s really helpful when you have some kind schedule for yourself each and everyday.

I try and do my schedule or to do list the night before and add more on in the morning if needed. But, my therapist told me not to stress on getting it all done, be happy if you get at least one thing done , but I need to at least do 3 things and it depends on what I’m doing, 1 thing might take all day. Good luck 🍀

@kylehalphen72622 жыл бұрын
The scheduling portion of this video helped really drill down on something that Jordan Peterson said on the same subject, which is that the calendar and a scheduled day is not this enemy or limiting opponent we make it out to be. If you’re designing your own schedule for your day, you’re doing yourself a huge favor by giving yourself the exact day you want to have. You can almost ensure that you get to do exactly what you want to do, and that’s what I’ve told myself I was doing all these years avoiding blocking out windows of time every day for specific activities. Like I’m so free because I don’t set up a window for work, a window for family, a window for nap/read/relax… But honestly the opposite is true, and you leave your day open to being molded and decided on by everyone or everything else if you fail to schedule your ideal day for yourself.

I find the Pomodoro technique very useful for focus. 25 minutes of sheer concentration and a 5 minute short pause. After 4 pomodoro sessions, I allow myself a 10-15 minute long pause. It works because when you start to tire yourself, the pause comes. I've been able to do so much using it and I can't recommend it enough. Of course, people are different and it might not work for everyone, but it's sure worth trying.

For a while nowI've been convinced I have ADHD but your videos are making me think this might just be something everyone goes through. Whatever it is I appreciate these life hacks and am definitely going to see if they work for me.
@Idontknow-vm1iy Жыл бұрын
It depends. We live in a day where our attention is constantly divided, thus causing our ability to concentrate on something specific to decay. ADHD is a completely different set of symptoms that can be exacerbated by our current conditions. The only way to create a genuine point of inquiry for yourself is to read the DSM. The most important point is that your symptoms SIGNIFICANTLY impact your ability to carry out your daily routine. An important deciding factor is that with ADHD, it’s unlikely you will reach a reasonably functional level of attention by simply changing habits. A good way to look at it is muscular atrophy caused by disease as opposed to inactivity. One requires medicinal intervention. Working out will not solve the underlying issue. I hope this helps :)

Being able to focus on one thing is important and I'm sure it has a great impact on ones self-improvement, but to be honest I find the most important skill to improve is ability to self-reflect. I meet so many people who never reflect on what they do, they don't question and they don't learn from their experiences. If you don't self-reflect you won't know that you need to work on yourself.

@M_SC4 жыл бұрын
Alex we just have to take the opposite advice from most people. Ignore the “do x for an hour without being distracted”. Instead, use neuroscience to work with your tendencies not declare them the enemy. I’ve learned how to read 200 Japanese script characters in the past 3 months simply by getting an app and pairing (pairing is a proven technique) it with Facebook. Before /after I use Facebook I practice a few Japanese words. 5 min at a time.

Boomer speaking here. Born 1956. Self belief is the most important thing. Do what you think needs doing, not what someone else thinks.I won't list the ''achievements'' ,but they all began with ''I can do this .'' If you want to help yourself,you will. If not, then not. No law says you have to be a high achiever.

Yes Deepwork is crazy crazy crazy EFFECTIVE I used to do this on my own with math: all electronics off except the laptop for math purposes, with earplugs in I'd fully engage with the topic for about two hours straight and got completely dissolved into it. Mind you that it got my whole physique involved as with this level of absorbtion there's loads of active visualisation and verbalisations going on in order to relate stuff and see the (wider) picture. The learning is... much deeper, visceral? It's like you become the object of study 😂 Intens focus is... intensly satisfying and addictive even. I guess it's peak-experience category. Keep 'm comin !

Wow. I think this made me finally realize my problem. I usually have some extremely productive phases followed by extremely unproductive phases and then I need time to get back into productivity and then the productive phase is almost over again... It's because I do not plan properly I just burn out myself in the productive phases and do not unwind bc i feel guilty not working 24/7 then and then the crash hits and I have to take a break from everything. How much more would I have done if had planned and especially had planned breaks to enjoy them guilt free. This may sound stupid but i just had an eye opening ^^"

Video takeaways:- How to concentrate- Step 1 - Craft your room. Get it organized and make it altered according to what you are meant to be doing there. *Focus is everything* Step 2 - Design your digital environment 1. News feed eradicator (chrome extension) 2. DF Tube - Eliminates youtube home page and sidebar recommendations. So that you can focus on what you came looking for. 3. Deleted social media app Step 3 - Training your mind. - *Be intentional with your time* - Game, but intentionally. Study but intentionally. Take control of your time. Socialize, but intentionally. - Start by scheduling one thing at a time. After it turns into habit, time to schedule a new thing.
