Looks like a very nice HT. Might have to pull the trigger on this one. Thank you Jason for the great review. I have Anytone (878), Yaesu FT-65R and the TYT TH-UV88 and all fit a specific niche. This may move the TYT and possibly the Yaesu out of the way. We will see. What are your thoughts Jason. How would you rate against the FT-65R and the TYT? 73 from W9JTC

Jason, I always like your reviews. If there's something you dont like, you dont hold back. I appreciate that honesty. I had to laugh at your comment that the 440 band is around 440 MHz. I dont know how many times I've called it the 440 band and was corrected by another ham operator that it's the 70cm band. Thank you for proving that i am not alone on this. I like the fact that this radio has full duplex for satellite operations. Can I use Chirp to program this radio, and can I use the same programming cable I use on my Baofeng? Im really considering buying this one to replace my HTX-202. I like the fact that it has a superhetrodyne receiver like my HTX-202. Keep up the great work in our fantastic hobby. 73, KB9RCR

curious to see how it does for satcomms. buy2way recommended the uv9 series for satellite comms because of the better filtering. stiff knobs and dark mode are definitely a plus anyway

It's basically the same exact radio - same internals except for the brighter LED, and of course some firmware tweaks. :) It has the same occasional desensing with the VHF uplink birds like SO50, but does great on the UHF birds, which is the majority.

@@bettersaferadio I like my Yaesu VX-6 knobs. They easily click every 2-3 degree and not stiff at all. The Yaesu VX-6R is rated as IPX7, meaning it can be submersed up to 3’ for 30 minutes before equipment failure.

@@billisnice Good for you Bill. The VX is a great little radio, but some people want the dual receivers and dual scanning, the much larger battery (more than double), the nearly double power output, the duplex operation, the larger color display, and the $50 savings, among other reasons. :)

I do not own one but pre-programmed channels can be a pro or con. It depends on how you search for the repeaters in all the massive database and how it handle random noise (static)? Anyone with one want to elaborate?

Interesting. Any idea if it will do both USA and EU frequencies on 70cm? ( 433.000- 440.000) I travel between the states and EU and I would hate to carry two radios. I carry both US and EU calls. Too bad they did not think of adding DMR to the radio as well.

U.S. frequencies are 420-450mhz so it should cover all of that

All I care about is: Does it come with a big battery for SHTF situations? Or can I buy an aftermarket big battery that will fit in the stock charger? When I say big I mean BIG. Thick. Heavy. Huge. All day.

The 3200 mAh comes stock and I often hear customers saying it lasts days, as in plural, or certainly all day with fairly heavy TX. As well, you can get the ELO-004 battery eliminator and rig it up to a nice 18650 pack and go for days and days.

It's going to need an unlock. Either a series of button presses upon power up, or possibly a software mod via cable. No word yet, apparently, and I'm waiting on that info, too. The GMRS version is an option, but losing ham tx.

I hope this radio has a better display than the KG-UV9K. I got the latter especially for its dual TRX in order to do sat ops. Outdoors (where the birds are), the display is TOTALLY unreadable. I have tried to find some settings to improve it but have come up with zilch. If anyone has a suggestion I would be happy to hear it. Now, it sits in a drawer in my home office. 179 Euros doing nothing. My 25 Euro Baofeng UV5R+ has a much better display and is fully readable outdoors.

3 new dark screen modes is one of the main tweaks for the UV9PX. It will help somewhat in terms of contrast, but these color screens will never be as good as say an OLED, which I hope they will work on for the future. I'm also looking for a polarizing anti-glare film to put on the 9-Series, which might help also, but I haven't had time to look into it. Anyone case to do the legwork? :)

KGUV9PX transmits on ham. KGUV9GX transmits on GMRS. Both radios can listen in on each others frequencies but they are factory locked to only be able to transmit on their own designated frequencies.

The HD1 is a direct-conversion DMR radio. The UV9PX is a superhet analog dual-receive, which is better suited to SHTF prepper use.

Wouxun has a couple of DMR radios already. They never really took off due to lack of features (number of channels, contacts, FPP, etc) They were solid radios, just better options out there, currently.
