@@bettersax and @Chad LB I'd like to get the Chad LB but thinking the 8* tip opening might require too much air. How does it work with the 7* or 7 (or smaller) tip opening? I know that some step baffles have problems with the smaller tip openings. Thanks for your feedback!

I purchased a 3d printer lately, and remembered this video. I went to thingiverse and searched for an alto mouthpiece. After printing and sanding the table flat, i was really gladly surprised. It actually worked, and was better compared to my cheap plastic one that came with the horn. That was a cheap upgrade :)

Sorry for replying a year after you commented but I was wondering which mouthpiece you printed out? I was wondering if you could link the mouthpiece you printed or give some additional info, thanks a lot!

I'm a believer. I purchased the Tivon Pennicott and the Scott Paddock. Although I'm just at the beginning of the intermediate stage, I really noticed the difference. The Tivon Pennicott plays a good mellow blues sound while my Scott Paddock plays a good aggressive Chuck Rio Tequila. I just ordered a Dan Forshaw for another comparison.

Definitely the Chad LB 7* sounds really good I admit. But most 3D printer plastics are pretty soft. I wonder how durable they'd be over time compared to a cast resin Ottolink. I'd still order black, I'm oldschool. I do my tables on a double sided japanese whetstone. 240/1000 like glass.

In 2022, my Syos Smoky alto mouthpiece is showing significant bite marks after only about 200 hours of playing. I don't like to use mouthpiece cushions. But I do get the dark sound that I like, over the full range of my Selmer Paris Series ii. Setup: a Rovner 1RL ligature and Rigotti Gold 3 Medium reed. Don't like the Syos ligature or cap. The ligature can't be adjusted up or down on the reed; the cap falls off frequently and is hard to find.

Hi Jay, influenced by Chad LB, I ordered a custom piece for my vintage Selmer 1930 bari -this horn is resistant to my modern bari Link and Meyer pieces, but worked with a very old. Huge chambered metal Link, that was only a 4 tip and too close. I suggested a cross between the old link and a modern 5 tip and after a rebuild to increase the shank (for tuning) it works great, more power, better tuning, and golf read harmonics!

I own Lorenzo's mouthpiece that I play on my P. Muriat tenor sax. I love it, as it absolutley gives, gives me the sound I have always wanted! Prior to this, My favorie was the Meyer 5* with an H frame ligature, recommended by Scott Paddock himself! I enjoy playing that mouthipiece too but the SYOS mouthpiece is a clear winner. Everyone who is accustomed to my playing has remarked how much fuller, rounder and richer I now sound. I definitely would love to have one for my alto sax as well. Whereas I was leaning towards Lorenzo's signature mouthpiece again, I think, like the sound of Godwin's too and would be happy to give it a try. I did not have a hang up about getting my mouthpiece in a bag. it was a cool difference to a box and it is very durable so, I'm confident it was pacakged suitably. I did have an issue, like you, with the table. it was not smooth enough and so I took the chance and lighlty polished it with some very fine emery paper and that fixed that issue instanty! Nice video Jay! I always appreciate the content you put out.

I ordered one for Alto and one for Tenor a couple of months ago. I customized both of them according to my tastes. I did not immediately make either my main piece. However, over time, through many random mouthpiece gladiator battles, Syos has emerged victorious! That was actually surprising to me because my mouthpiece battles are very randomized and objective. It takes time...a lot of time. Be patient and make your own choices. They worked with me via email, extensively and repetitively communicated. I also gave them artistic freedom to make the very best piece they could and...they went OFF! I also got customized engravings on each piece that are uniquely beautiful. Thank you Syos!!

I play a SYOS. I have a few of them for my tenor and Bari. I love them all. The one that is gold in my eyes, is a custom one they made for me. It really blew my mind that they made a mouthpiece that was exactly what I wanted. I asked for a mouthpiece with a tip opening equivalent to my Otto Link...they hit it perfectly. I love a breathy sound for a ballad tune...however, for bebop, something warm but very responsive. They did it for me, first time. I am amazed that I did not need to return it, without a thing needing done. I’m so content with it, and really worth every penny in my eye. Thanks for the review on this video, you’re gonna help a lot of people who may wonder about these fantastic pieces.

A couple of weeks ago I purchased a custom one on online and had it shipped from France to Asia. Shipping was quick, had to pay custom duty. I thought I was taking a risk. I told Syos I wanted to sound like a Brilhart Ebolin alto and tenor mouthpiece rolled into one tenor mouthpiece (basically to sound like a mix between Maceo Parker and Gene Ammons), and boy did the deliver. The first try too! I still have mine two years later and love it! And it’s coral pink, so it makes practicing less intimidating, less dark and foreboding and self serious as a black hard rubber mouthpiece. Just a small thing that makes a huge difference for me personally!

Hello Jay, I have some Syos mouthpieces. They sound great. The table and the rails are perfect: table flat and rails symmetric. But you have the texture and no seal. I put a fine sandpaper on a flat underground and very carefully give it a few strokes(4 or 5) . result: seal and pop! And they play even better. 5 minutes work only!

I've been playing the Dayna Stephens model with a N0. 9 (3.05mm) tip opening since March 2019 and I love it. I spend a lot of time on long notes and overtones so the larger opening is not a bother and I play No.2 reeds. For me this works well. I tried the SYOS cushions but they did not last too long, B&G clear cushions work well. The ligature is great and really no fuss to use. It also doubles as a groovy MP stand on my desk. Thanks, as always, for your generosity and passion to share your knowledge Jay.

If you're wondering about the little lines at the beginning of the chamber, I'm not 100% sure about what exactly they do, but I can make a guess. I know Theo Wanne recently started making classical alto sax mouthpieces that have these little "gills" all along the baffle. I think this either adds resistance or focuses the air more. After visiting their website, one thing I definitely recommend is allowing the buyer to see what their mouthpiece looks like before they buy it. For example, I'm assuming turning the "power" and brightness up will give me a high baffle, small chamber, and turning up the darkness would give me a lower baffle and larger chamber. It'd be cool if I could maybe have a diagram of what my mouthpiece would look like as I adjust its settings.

I have to caveat here. When I wanted to return a Knoel Scott alto because I couldn't get clear lows I was told to return one before they'd send me another. So I couldn't compare them. When I complained a little at this I got what in the UK is called 'a clip round the ear'ole' (a sharp Parisienne rebuke). I also find your feedback may be handled by different folk there who give differing advice. In short, IME, their customer service leaves a good deal to be desired. But hey, its probably me - usually is, I have 'kick me' written on my back.

All sounded good. I liked the first mouthpiece the best on the exercise, but Godwin more on the ballad. I don't like their ligatures. I liked the first tenor the best. One thing I found was that not being a pro, I don't pretty good on all pieces. I found the brightest one I tried to be hard to control...I think a true pro can make them all work. I switched to SYOS from Jody Jazz. Ferranzo for tenor...and it's similar but I found SYOS freer blowing than Jody Jazz and more powerful.

A while ago, I was invited to play tenor with a small group and singer primarily doing easy listening jazz numbers. My current mouthpieces were a Berg Larson 110-2, ponzol vintage ss 105, otto link tonemaster 9. All far too dominating for such a style. I was listening to Chad LB and heard him play wonderfully at lower volumes without losing intonation or tone quality, so I picked up the Chad LB Syos with an 8* opening, and I could not be happier. I love the tone I get (and others too!) , and the control is exceptional. It's now my standard mouthpiece I use in the bigband, funk band, and latin band as well. I'm curious how well the plastic will hold up over time.

I hear you on the give and take of rubber/metal vs plastic, I tend to see it as another option vs better or worse. I tend to switch a lot and like the freshness of revisiting all of my pieces for a few gigs/recordings and the SYOS are always in the rotation for all four horns. Has anyone else found that newer reeds play a bigger part in the quality of the sound with SYOS than it does on rubber and metal pieces?

Thanks for the review, agree sound all great. I can imagine some people would like to swap and change depending on what song is being played, much like synth keyboard players swap their tones around. So has anyone spent the dollars on a 3D printer instead and roll their own, surely there must be a whole host of experimenters out there. I make my own hand carved Shakuhachi and the mouth piece design is an important part of the sound, great to experiment.

@@bettersax It makes me wonder if the "seal of approval" when doing the suction test has negligible affects when setting up a mouthpiece assuming it's not a considerable leak. Would be interesting to get 2 identical mouthpieces, one that seals and one that doesn't and see if there is any difference.

Syos generously allowed me to try 3 different designs, but, I non of them sealed and because of it l found that they were harder to blow.

@@johnventer7481 my SYOS mpc does not seal but it's 10x easier to blow than my otto link. It's so easy that I can use a stronger reed with ease. And dynamic are incredible, from ppp to fff, I can hear my sax even with brass instruments around me. Sure there must be some "lost" air going between the reed and the table of the mpc...

Hey Jay, great review. I have discovered that I do actually get a really good seal on my several SYOS mpc's, when the mpc is on the neck and I seal off the neck. And that is with a 9*. But the mpc does not seal or pop with just the mpc alone. I expect it is because the end of the mpc is not machined flat, which has no impact.

ABOUT SYOS 3D AND SUGAL 3D Hey Jay -Gary Sugal here. As always a great review, about the Syos mouthpieces… and some great playing .. Kindly note Syos and I are two different companies. THUS I wish to clarity a few thoughts. . I think you will agree that your sound is your voice. No one can imitate your speaking voice. There is no mouthpiece on the planet that will imitate the sound for example of Getz , Brecker, Brandford. to name a few In fact it is well known that it takes between seven and ten years to develop your own “unique” sound. If you listen to a Brecker recording-just one or two measures in and you know it’s Brecker. I’ve been making high end premium customize CNC metal mouthpieces in house for over thirty three years. Most recently I’ve introduced a complete line of 3D printed mouthpiece produced from a proprietary food safe filament that allows me to sand and polish the mouthpiece as you would a metal mouthpiece…: thus removing any layers of filament that could eventually harbor bacteria. Over the years I’ve kept my models very simple; .there has always been a model ONE and a MODEL II . i.e. a MB I & MB II , a KW I & KW II , ..a NEW YETI .. our FAMOUS SUPER GONZ I .. now available in ten colors ten sizes, five models and a CARBON FIBER material. .. plus a Super Classic Alto I and II , (soprano-baritone - in my que-coming very soon) . .. so the BIG DIFFEENCE IS : I've replicated every one of my time TESTED CNC METAL mouthpieces in to a 3D version... NOTE : The model one has no baffle and a model II has a “snow hill raised baffle.-by the way you can only alter the raised baffle (I call a snow -hill) so much. in the software. That internal curve or hill ( not the table ) will create a bright sound - and too much adjustment it all starts to sound “kazooist” .. Our NEW FIBER CARBON material is a game changer BIG TIME !. Our return policy, packaging w all mpcs. come in velvet bag inside a Lucite box, build on sliding ligature included, . and a acrylic bite plate hand set for comfort and ease of playing .. personal hand paint (signature ) free mouthpieces I've given away (about $15k) All this info will be email over to you. … As the site evolves please check in from time to time : www.sugalmouthpieces.net

I got two alto mouthpieces today through the 'Freaks' promotion. Ok, I've not had the chance to play them much yet, but they feel weird and almost too lightweight. Right now I'm not convinced.
