I'm from Germany and "Der Sandmann" is a mandatory read in school. One of the few books/stories I really enjoyed. Being forced to read stuff takes all the joy out of it for me, but this was great.

I agree. "Withnail and I" is the greatest comedy ever made.

You should check out the ballet Coppelia which is based on The Sandman. Much more lighthearted. I like The King’s Betrothed by Hoffmann. Made me wonder if Jeff Mangum was a fan.

Der Sandmann is one of the favorite stories I've ever read, German dark romantic -aka Schwarze Romantik- is an amazing genre. I haven't seen many people talk about it, as a Germanist this video makes me very happy. I'd also recommend The Devil's Elixir and -this one's more of an impossible love story- The Doge and Dogess.

Do you have a podcast? If you don't, you probably should. I'd listen every day.

Definitely adding to the list, massive Ligotti fan and love diving into origins of the realm. Also, for more cerebral horror, highly recommend Apocalypse Party's authors (BR Yeager, Gary Shipley, David Peak, etc.). Bleak in all the best ways

Hoffmann had an influence on Poe. In Hoffmann’s story “The Entail,” we find a crumbling mansion and a character named Roderick. Sound familiar? My own guess is that what Nathaniel’s father and Coppelius are working on has to do with alchemy.

It’s fascinating how something written in the 19th century can still feel relevant today, especially with the themes of AI and the uncanny. Hoffman was ahead of his time.

I just read “The Sandman,” and I realized how it reminded me of that young person who recently… took their own (you know what) because an AI chatbot told them to (this person was apparently “in love” with the bot). Eerie parallels. Anyway, this was my first time finding one of your videos and you remind me so much of my English professors. As an English major, whenever I talk about literature, I also go down those “Oh, this reminds me of _____” moments. :)

Interesting you cite Carmilla as one of your favourites. Since that was the book that unlocked in me that love of old literature. I read it when I was I think 17

Awesome, I’ve never even heard of this and I hope to read Dracula and Frankenstein by Halloween, I’ll add this! And you’ve done Faust? I’ll have to find that video First Freud ever? I haven’t read that one but it will probably make you want to read more (some of it isn’t good at all).

Would you ever read and review Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl by Harriet Jacobs? I consider it a classic but don’t see it included often. Love the recommendations ❤️❤️

i read this short story after your review and i have to agree this was a fun interesting read i didn't want to put it down though the ending has me a bit perplexed but that could be i was expecting a reveal at the end or maybe there was and i just didn't get it.

hmmm, this is weird. I don't give a fuck about Sandman. How can I request books for you to review? Sigh. I highly recommend you try Scott McClanahan. The Sarah Book first. After that, trust me, you'll find your way. Love your shit, please and thanks.
