I had the video game problem with Breath of the Wild. I was going to Mom's in the Blue Ridge mountains and stopped at a 'scenic overlook' to stretch my legs and my brain had to tell the other half of the brain 'You don't have a paraglider, OR the upper body strength to hold onto one even if physics worked like that. You can NOT get to Mom's house faster by yeeting yourself off the mountain and pulling a glider out of your butt. _What about your car? And PHYSICS??'_

The ability for brain to immerse itself into the game so fully, that video game logic becomes, even just for a second, real, is incredible to me
@taniabaildon969621 күн бұрын
Our brains were designed to learn from our experiences over millennia. It can't tell the difference between 'real' and 'imaginary'. This is why visualization exercises work to help athletes practice, and people from every profession and lifestyle to use affirmations or hypnosis to change their thinking and their lives. It is also why watching too many violent movies can be bad. If repeated messages don't affect you, why would big corporations spend billions on repeat advertisements called commercials? They wouldn't. It is just another form of mental programming. With all of that said, I game a lot (many different games) and find myself seeing all sorts of things in the world and reacting to them for a moment. My husband games with me, and we laugh at ourselves as we point out the bush over there that we both want to pick the berries from for health, or the sound something makes that makes us jump or look for treasure or whatever. The reaction is very real, because we have been programming our brains to be looking for those things. It can’t know they are only ‘real’ in the game.

I used to have a trampoline. I played with some balls on it, as children are wont to do, and my dad told me that it was my responsibility to keep them on the trampoline. It was a windy day, and we were going shopping. I had also just been playing Minecraft. While driving away, I thought to myself, ”Should I have brought the balls into the garage? Nah, they’re not within render distance, it’ll be fine.” I then realized my mistake.

And, to anyone else going through a tough time, just remember to keep going. I can't promise it'll get better quickly but whilst you are still here there's always hope.

People you meet in retail: Rude because they are in a rush to leave, and know they likely have to put their too-expensive groceries into their too-expensive car. People you meet in food service: Hungry. This can either lead to them treating you like a saint that seeks to feed them, or an obstacle between them and food. Flip a coin unless the food service primarily involves coffee... If you are a Barista, like I once was: I am sorry. You know the wrath of humanity. The worst face we show to the world, and every heinous word that comes with it. I am sorry. I cannot stress that enough. I am so, SO sorry.

The video game phenomena mentioned near the end of the video may or may not be commonly called the Tetris effect, since it is easy to get it from long Tetris sessions. I've been there, and games play themselves out in your mind when you close your eyes. This also occurs with artistic pursuits, such as sculpting.

I was originally going to leave a silly, unserious comment. Then I realised that wasn’t enough for me, because this video is special to me. Due to some emotional issue I still haven’t identified, I have been entirely unable to cry (yes, no matter what, even when a loved one of mine died), until this video made me tear up. What's helped me is when I do cry, I don't try to fight it at all. I don't try to think about the stuff I couldn't cry about before. I just focus on the thing that made me cry, and it's gotten easier to. It's a relief. Crying releases oxytocin and endorphins. It relieves stress. But focusing on the stuff I feel almost guilty about not crying for makes my tears dry up again. Worrying or thinking about crying, same thing.

I remember finding someone's bank credit card in a parking lot while on a walk to the nearby Starbucks. It looked like it had been there for a little while and there weren't any vehicles in the lot, so I took it home with me. Once I got home, I called the bank, punched in the card number and explained the situation to the person on the phone and gave them the cardholder's name so they could let them know that they lost the card. The person on the phone thanked me for letting them know and told me to destroy the card.

re: video games but not really, i had a minesweeper phase in high school. i lived and breathed minesweeper. i haven't played minesweeper in over a year (because it really was a problem, my autism knows no moderation), but to this day i still get what i think is almost a visual aura, my vision has a border that is a game of minesweeper in progress. now it only really happens when i'm tired or thinking about minesweeper or thinking about thinking, but it was permanent for a long while. i wish i could be normal about minesweeper, i want to play it again :(
@comradewindowsill425323 күн бұрын
on an only slightly related note, i have a specific scene in my story that is indelibly linked to minesweeper in my head now, just because i thought it through while playing minesweeper. for a long while, every minesweeper game I played would bring me back to that scene, and I'd play minesweeper until the scene finished.

Could you set up a parental control for yourself? IDK if it would work for you, but maybe having an something external stop you playing more than, for example, 1 hour per day (even though you could techniquely over rule it) might work? On the other hand if your brain is firmly attached to minesweeper that you are kind of hallusinating it when it isn't even there maybe that isn't a good idea

The radio worker dealing with the caller who said all the random stuff was good. I don't think "I want to be a cat" is weird, but then, I'm a Schrodinger's Mess of dragon, hoofbun, and yinglet. ^_^;; The little girl with the construction crew gave me a flashback to when I was a really little kid. Like, six or seven. There was a construction crew outside my house, I think they were doing work on the sewer or something? They were there for a few days. I remember one time, I thought, "They must be bored and lonely." So I brought out my Speak n Spell and tried to hang out with them, and let them play on it, since it was the most fun thing in the world for me. (I also had Speak n Read, but my favorite was probably Speak n Math, and so I probably brought that out in addition to or instead of the Spell.) Kid me was completely oblivious to the fact that the dude was like, "Why is this random kid trying to shove a plastic toy in my face?" Ah well. My favorite, though, was probably the "gaming logic" one. I think my worst one was back when I was working at an arcade, so around 2004ish. I had gotten badly hooked on Polarium on the DS (a game in which you draw a single continuous path across a field of black/white tiles, flipping all tiles on that path, and try to get solid lines of white or black tiles), and one time when my alarm clock went off, I shot up and tried to drag a finger across the display to "solve the puzzle" thinking that's how I turned off the alarm clock.
