Johnny Lights was an omnipresent larger than life professional gambler on British racecourses for decades, one of the biggest players, and later, layers on the rails. He's suffered from ill health for the last 13 years but was keen to tell his fascinating story.
In Part 1, Johnny talks about how he inherited the nickname that he'd be known by on racecourses for decades and relates a story which involves a very nice pair of crocodile shows and a racecourse interaction with none other than Barney Curley who said he should swap them for hobnails.

Used to see him at the races all the time he was smart he knew he was not a judge as such so he kept an eye on the people he knew what they were doing. I was one of the people who would travel to the races every day and I can tell you it takes a certain type of person to be a pro punter I saw so many people come and go trying I am too old now to go around the county like I used to it was a fun time but those days are long gone for me. I suppose I should give some advice to people who like a little bet. Number one use your eyes to watch for things in races that might have been missed by others, Get the maths right and try and work out what you think a horse's price should be if it's bigger than what you think then that might well be a bet. Don't be greedy pro punting is all about making small profits over a period of time. Good luck.

My dad knew Johnny very well and used to bet with him a lot! I met him a few times, my favourite story about meeting him was my dad was doing a bit of stir in Ford. Bruno was due to fight Tim Witherspoon for the world title at the old Wembley Stadium summer 1996. I used to communicate with my dad by letter, I was away at boarding school! Long story short I went up to the fight with a friend and his father with instructions to ask any tout "Do you know where Johnny Lights is?" Only had to ask the first one who pointed me to where Johnny was standing, he liked to be between the two towers. I walked over and asked him if he was Johnny Lights, he looked me up and down and said " You must be Freddie's boy, you want 3 ringside. Here you go boy and give your dad my best when you see him next!" He gave me 3 tickets 2 rows from the front! I was 16 and my friends dad, who was a very straight man, was gobsmacked!!

Another classic. Was at Plumpton. He backed a horse in a Novice hurdle at 4-6, walking up and down the line getting on what he could. Everyone wanted to be with it. Went off around 2-5. It was clear turning for home. Lights waddled down the terraces at Plumpton. Shouting Oi Oi get it ready Mugs towards the bookmakers. You know what happened next. Somehow Jockey falls off jumping the last. Over 20 lengths clear. Bookmakers give it to him large. Lights leaves the course with his tail between his legs. Of course was on course a few days later
