Steve Paul what I'm guessing the there must have been TV producers that bought up the rights to the 1930s Betty cartoons and re-aired them after school in the 50s or something like that.

At first it didn't make sense to me that the lowest bid was the one to win but I quickly realized the planets symbolize the different methods of attaining land and its associated cost. Mars is war and the first to bid but the most expensive. Venus is love bids love and is almost as expensive as Mars. Then a clearly Semitic Saturn comes last and undercuts Venus by half.

Mind-altering drug use was quite frequent and abundant in the 1920s and early 1930s. The 1920s and early 30s was a very liberal era with the encouragement of mind-altering drug use, the trying out of new social norms, etc. Cartoons didn't start to be censored until the mid 1930s.

P.S. Saturn in myth, is the father of Jupiter, and is usually shown as an old man (see the scary Goya picture "Saturn devouring his son"). The Fleischers showed Saturn as the kind of old man *they* knew from the old neighborhood. Their version of 'down home' humor. It is as valid as any other immigrant group's experience.

The Jazz section toward the end is a 1932 commercial recording by Billy Banks Rhythmakers-- Bugle Call Rag with Red Allen, Pee Wee Russell, Joe Sullivan etc. This was a Brunswick-ARC recording. Louis Armstrong was the exception

A hidden message from Betty Boop? We learn in earlier cartoons that Betty's parents were Jewish. She is the wandering Jewess. Notice the old Jew is dressed up like Saturn and Mars and Venus like the old warrior of Europe and the beautiful maiden. Who owns the world-- the Old Jew even though he bids only 20. He takes the wealth and gravity out of the earth and the whole place floats away into outer space. Luckily it all comes crashing back after WWII.

Isn't it amazing that they claim the media is owned by Jews when this sort of this is what the media shows? I was reading into that the whole time. Not sure how the auction thing worked or compelled, unless the comment about the body politic is the people that sold the world to Jews were fools that couldn't do math. Was there a knock in that generation on auctioneers as a class of people? Usually Mars would have got the bid at $50. Venus bids down at $40 and the auctioneer decided that would be winner if no one spoke up. Suddenly I was totally confused. At this point there's nothing anti semetic in the episode, it's just a rigged game. Then comes Saturn, Planet: Jew, who wasn't clealy Jewish at first, so the $20 low ball just seems like it's how the game is played. What was extremely interesting and telling was the choice to make Saturn -- and Saturnine means beautiful, so not sure what the slam there was -- the Jew, rather than her slightly larger neighbor that had all the hallmarks of being the right choice if you're trying to get subliminal messages to the public about a group of people you don't like: largest planet, full of hot air aand most convincingly, the planet's literal first consonant is "Ju", or, of course "Jew". Why didn't they go with "Jewpiter"? At first I thought it was a visual thing, the rings around Saturn's head make it seem like the orthodox Jew's brim hat, because the time, Jews were largely coming to the country through Ellis Island and lived in New York, so it was the association with the brim hat that made it the most convincing Jew. I mean, maybe at the time the public conception of the Jew was an orthodox jeweler in Brooklyn. Even though American Judaism was well established by 1932 and it was a reformed-conservative movement that looked more midwestern than Brooklyn where men shaved and maybe at most wore a yarmulke. I guess that the brim hat was a stronger association even that "Jewpiter" -- no one would have missed that. Could they have? Or were they stating a preference for the assimilated Jew? Maybe it's just that, even in 1932, you wanted to try and sneak in canard so there's less chance people complain against the studio and cancel your organization. Bad press is bad news, after all. Jewpiter would have definitely pissed off American Jews, who were not rich at all at the time (not to suggest they are not, most aren't; there's a handful of well known wealthy Jews, though, who are a real problem for the rest of their middle income class, just ask any of them). Better you make a cerebral game in ascribing the Jewish features to Saturn to prevail in the courts of law and of public opinion. It's a giant tease, in other words, because it just gives an anti semitic judge or studio head a chance to say "what? I don't see it, it's not JEWpiter next door, I don't see why you people are complaining" insincerely and snidely, knowing full well what the media is peddling. Sort of like like most of anything that comes from Trump communication deck. Things don't change, do they. Indeed, the cartoon on its whole isn't an anti semitic purpose. But this episode was suddenly metaphorical about global politics. It truly came out of nowhere. Like, have you seen the Betty Boop Halloween episode? The only thing I can get out of that episode is that cocaine and heroin are some great drugs that make you cold and sick when you withdraw. Most other episodes extol jazz and multiculturalism, and on this episode you even see acknowledgment of scientific law in the Planetary arrangement and the focus on Earth's magnetism as the reason for gravity. Of course the most defining anti-Christian element to Betty Boop is the woman herself, who is a sexualized non-church going S&M sub (I think sub, her whole demeanor is submissive, because let's not forget how women were viewed then, also), so it's interesting -- nay, depressing, truly, given the year and what we knew happened to the Jewish people after that, it's depressing -- to see an agnostic liberalism suddenly cotton to a distinctly anti-semitic view. Weren't the Jews their friends? What happened there? That does not compute with conspiracy theorists who are the usual peddlers of anti semitic canards. Wasn't Hollywood Jewish and liberal? Isn't the media Jewish owned, in their dumb machinations? Because here's a cartoon proving that Jews weren't welcome and that they were outright disparaged by the media. There's jazz and science and sexiness. And also a real disdain for Jews. So many things don't follow. But back to the auction: the comment must have been about the "idiots in charge that would sell the world to the cheap, formless, bumbling Jew". This is also an interesting statment if you consider the anti semitisms of yesterday and today. Back then, it appeared that the Jews weren't scheming or thoughtful. I mean Saturn is such an aloof idiot. Doing things for nothing like pulling the magnetism from the Earth and then reinserting it. That's like tactile learning of a two year old, not exactly the stuff of a people supposedly of The Book. The ultimate statement: Jews are bumbling, dumb, infantile, thoughtless, formless. Their money is old money --- they just have it, right around their necks. And their bumbling idiocy will get us all killed and is the reason for our problems. The can inflate and crash a market because of their lack of awareness. In a moment, I'll explain the implications of that understatement, because they're not small. But now, at least, compare the view of the Jew as bumbling do-nothing'er with today's ant-semitism's contention about the Jew. It's completely opposite of today, where antisemitism seems to have largely tossed that view of the International Jew for one of being a clever, scheming, deep state institutionalist with an agenda. The Jew of today would have been far more purposeful. At some point between then and now, Jews began to rub their hands together. They didn't then, that's for sure. The hands rubbing canard is apparently new, which is new to me. Thanks Betty Boop, I guess. But yeah, about those horrific implications are actually horrific: this view of the Jew fits neatly into a 1932 calendar, doesn't it? Jews were seen as wastes of life, too stupid to help man, only concerned with self indulging themselves with global ramifications in fucking literally everything up, everywhere, because of their bumbling. That ledge is not a huge leap to: it's okay to genocide them, then, because they weigh humanity down and have all the money and are unpurposeful as a rule. I'm sure Hitler saw this cartoon, he had to have. It's just SOOOOO nazi, it's uncanny. I sincerely doubt Hitler did not see this cartoon and like it. He definitely liked American politics of purposeful marginalization, the US wrote the book he read from. We do know that. But anyway, after the auction, suddenly the shot of anti semitism into the arm dissipates: for no particular reason, Saturn pulls out the Earth's gravity, and this pointless occurrence actually leads to a good fucking time. At first people are enjoying no gravity. Though the episode began about Betty looking for a new residence, there was nothing recognizably vilifying to Jews. We didn't hear that Betty couldn't afford the house and that the owner must have necessarily been Jewish. Simply that it is not a home she can live in, for whatever reason. Maybe after 1929 and some years into the Great Depression, it wasn't necessary to say why you could not have something. It was obviously because you had no money. So there's no relation to the original struggle and to the sudden introduction of anti semitism. It would seem that *because of the cheap Jew's bumbling, a good time was had by all*. It's when Jew-Saturn puts the magnetic back that the blame of global recession and deflation gets pinned on the Jews. Even here though, he is still a bumbling infant, he doesn't rub his hands before putting the magnet back in. He just does and flies away, like "oh not sure why I bought this earth for $20, i guess i'll leave". ??? But it's the homes and buildings in the air and then their sudden descent and crash back to Earth with the overcast being the Jewish face of Saturn flying away in a fit of self-involvement that makes the point of this short stupid cartoon: "this [depression] was all because of a cheap Jew". Wow. WOW. That's really damning. We were always taught that it was in Nazi Germany that anti semitism was bred, but this cartoon proves otherwise. Internationally, Jews were condemned. I suppose the only reason Germany went to the lengths they did is because they were starving more than America was. If America had lost World War 1, the Holocaust would have absolutely happened here. It still could. We've got camps on the Southern Border, but the way the economy is going makes me wonder if there trial balloons for the real scapegoats.

Everyone comments on Saturn here, but the other bidders are interesting too. Mars is likely a jab at Mussolini, what with his fondness for Roman iconography that he used to bolster his regime. Venus is probably someone from the era, but I can't guess who offhand - the hairstyle's more late-1920s than 30s though. Older movie star maybe?

@yohannbiimu It was a "characterization" based on a type of person that exists. It doesn't make it any less antisemitic being portrayed by the Fleischers than by a non-Jewish person. And for the record, the Fleischers were not practicing Jews due to a disdain of their childhood environment. Many of the Fleischers and their children associated with and married Christians.

This is a very eye opening cartoon. because it is Hollywood's way to putting in our face that they've known we live in an electromagnetic universe since the time and before this came out and yet they still sell the masses the gravity big bang myth . Nobody gets enough to see we've been had. It would lead to free energy that Tesla was working on and they can't have that.

The Fleischers had worked on a film explaining Einstein's Theory of Relativity back in the 1920s. Their take on the universe in this Betty Boop cartoon was obviously influenced by that earlier science-based film.

I have something to tell you. The elephant is the symbolism for the Republican Party for when Herbert Hoover was in office from 1928-1932. Time to literally address the elephant in the room. When the United States Federal Government cannot get their act together during the Great Depression...it is blatantly obvious that the crises is beyond the powers of the feds.
