Everyone in this cartoon besides Betty was voiced by Cab Calloway. So he's all the voices, conducts the band for the music, sings amazingly and they rototscoped his dance moves for the animation itself.

@Sonicfanboy3 but this style of animation was made before Mickey existed
@davezanko9051 Жыл бұрын
@@trashking471 This cartoon is from five years after Mickey's debut. Here's where we get into the deep dive of animation history. While the Fleischers had used the early sound system Phonofilm to make their singalong "Car-Tunes" series (the origin of the follow-the-bouncing-ball convention), they really didn't have synchronized sound with actual speech. The first cartoon with that released was Paul Terry's Dinner Time from 1928, but it was Mickey's wide release debut "Steamboat Willie", which came out only a few weeks later (so they were in the works at the same time), that made it take off. (And made Mickey an overnight star.) But "Steamboat Willie" wasn't the first Mickey cartoon produced. That was "Plane Crazy". However, that cartoon was originally silent (as had been Disney's Oswald the Lucky Rabbit cartoons for Universal Studios before that). Despite showing it to a test audience and a few studio execs, Walt had been unable to get a distribution deal, because there was nothing particularly special about the short as a silent cartoon. So it (and the intended follow up, "The Gallopin' Gaucho") were set aside for the production of the full-sound "Steamboat Willie". In designing that cartoon, Walt was inspired to coordinate the movement closely with the music based on the performances of a theatre organist he knew from back in Kansas City, Carl W. Stalling. Stalling had made a name for himself as an organist and conductor of small ensembles that accompanied silent films because of his skill at improvising musical beats that matched the film. After using that concept in "Steamboat Willie", Walt contacted Carl to write scores for "Plane Crazy" and "Gallopin' Gaucho" so they could be released with sound. Walt wound up hiring Stalling full-time as his musical director, in which role Stalling convinced Disney to launch the "Silly Symphonies" series of musical cartoons, beginning with "The Skeleton Dance" in 1929. He developed the use of a metronome to set a base timing for synchronizing the score to the cartoon, which developed into the click track used by every film composer to this day. He left as full-time musical director after only two years, but continued to wrote scores for Disney and Ub Iwerks (who had also left Disney around the same time) until July 1936, when he was hired by Leon Schlesinger as the full-time musical director for the Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies series at Warner Bros., where he turned the cartoon score into an absolute art form, scoring almost every single Warner Bros. cartoon for 22 years until his retirement, a total of over 600 cartoons. He was the one who made "The Merry-go-round Broke Down" and "Merrily We Roll Along" the respective themes for those series, and wrote Bugs Bunny's theme "What's Up Doc". He's also the one who leaned heavily into classical music, making pieces like Liszt's "Hungarian Rhapsody no. 2" and Raymond Scott's "Powerhouse" synonymous with the golden age of American cartoons. Carl Stalling was the man when it came to cartoon music. And he invented Mickey Mousing even before Mickey was born.

At the time of this being made, Max Fleischer (the creator of Betty Boop), and Walt Disney were in a kind of feud. Walt claimed to have been the first person to make animation with sound with Mickey Mouse’s debut, “steamboat willy”, when in reality, it was actually Fleischer with “My Old Kentucky Home”. Obviously, Disney ended up becoming more popular due to its more family friendly animation, whereas Fleischer stuck to his odd, almost hellish animation. Fleischer ended up going bankrupt, ending his career, meaning Disney won. It’s quite sad, but it really shows what kind of person Walt was, stealing ideas and claiming them as his own.
