Just borrowed this DVD from the library. Watching the movie took me back to 1983. Oh, I was so young then at 20. I gazed at the movie section paper ads from "Tender Mercies" beckoning me to the Plains, although I was in college in Virginia. The song allowed me to borrow a memory of Lane Brody singing this lovely song. How this wakes nostalgia, and reminds me of so many people I've known, loved and lost since that time.

The interplay of this masterpiece ballad and the dialog outside the bar hits the mark for emotional conflict and brings the audience on board with the emotions of both characters. Remember, she sees Duvall leave the hall. He just can't take the pain of seeing and hearing her.... the longing, the memories.... and she continues the performance. This is the plot. I've tried my best to find a full cut of this performance which apparently does not exist.This arrangement is unmatched despite all other performances even by Buckley herself. Much has been lost because of the arrogance of this industry. Thank God Shirley Bassey's original "Goldfinger" didn't have the same fate. Although unlike, "Over You", many of Bassey's subsequent performances closely followed the original's pattern through the years. I'm grateful to have this much.

New video is being digitized daily, so I hope we get it sooner rather than later. It's just such a brilliant performance. My 2nd favorite is her on Carson singing this, the one where she's just singing this, without memory, but this performance is still the best.

I love this movie and remember the first time I saw it. In the beginning I thought it was going to be a movie about him getting sober. That was resolved pretty quickly. Then a van of guys showed up and I thought it was going to be he was running from something. Nope, not quite that either. Then I thought it was going to be about reconciling with his daughter. Nope, not quite that either. I can't recall another movie I've ever seen where it was truly a slice of life where you had no idea what was going to happen next.

Lane Brody recorded it which I bought on Itunes, but it just isn’t Betty Buckley! ☹️What a voice, and the movie was outstanding. I am going to rent it for $3.99 to see it all over again. She sang it for me as an encore at a concert years back. I brought her flowers as she bowed..and people started yelling songs. She took my flowers and asked what I wanted to hear. I said "Over You." She said I was way too young to know that song..asked her pianist if he could pick it up if she started. It was absolutely the coolest thing. She was like the most amazing story teller and artist.

For the general public, Betty Buckley has always been associated with Eight is enough but, for me, she will always be associated with my favorite movie, "Carrie"! What a voice, she can belt as high as she wants, what a range! And what an actress. I saw clips of her in "Sunset Boulevard" and she seems to have been the best Norma Desmond. I never understood why she never became a star of Genn Close's magnitude. Maybe she didn't have the chance of having her own "Fatal Attraction"? The industry is all about hits. If you don't have a hit, you will be stuck in obscurity, I guess. I love you Betty! For me, you are the best.

It's a real shame that this version doesn't seem to have ever been produced in its entirety. As good as the version on Johnny Carson is, this is better, her tone a bit lower. I just can't fathom, as an acadamy award contender, how this never made it even to the C & W charts.
@susansokoloski22335 жыл бұрын
It was not released in audio because Betty was not on the soundtrack album due to "movie studio beurocracy." She performed the song in the movie, promoted it for the studio but was cut out in the recording. Shame because the song wouldn't have been given and Academy nod if not for her.

Betty is always an actress who plays a person who is older than she really really is. That is so refreshing in show biz, where all the actors try to pretend to be younger. Betty was only 34 in this flick. She has a 18 year old daughter in T.Mercies!

@angela8257 There is a video on KZbin of her sing the whole song on the Tonight Show in 1984. UNBELIEVABLE PERFORMANCE. As for CDs, unfortunately, they didn't have Betty Buckley perform Over You on the Tender Mercies soundtrack album. But she did record it for her London Concert CD. I don't think the London Concert version is as good as the soundtrack would have been, but it's better than nothing.

Great film but director Bruce Beresford and his editor really botched this sequence. Dixie (Betty Buckley) should have sung the ballad FIRST in its entirety and appeared on camera for same with a few reaction shots, especially of Robert Duvall, interspersed. The uptempo number should have followed with the eventual cutting away...
