I had the privilege to watch her pilot the Michelob Light Wellcraft Scarab off Saugatuck, Michigan in 1981 and 1982. It was incredible. First year she won her class and it was so rough that she broke an ankle. Second year, she broke an outdrive and limped it in to still finish.

I was fortunate to meet Betty in about 1980, in Melbourne, a lovely lady. Quite inspirational to a then 12 year old.

Thank You, Nigel, for posting this to KZbin. This interview with Betty Cook is one of my favorite of her. Betty won the 1977 World Championship, Key West, FL, in her Team Scarab 38 KAAMA #89. She raced the 1977 season in the United States mainly in the 38' Team Scarab, her first Scarab victory came in the Bushmills Grand Prix, March 5th, 1977, Newport Beach, California. She also raced a 1977 Team Scarab 9 Meter Kevlar49 boat. The 36 Cigarette was chosen for Cowes due to transport logistics. A Team Scarab boater like Betty was not able to live without her Scarab in the U.S. too long. :)

I will never forget Betty and her husband Paul inviting my family together with dear friends to their private yacht Honu in the summer of 1973. For me as a twelve year old boy this was the beginning of my intense love for powerboats and motor yachts.
