I confess to having the same expression when one of my sisters gave me a brief rundown of the typical comments she'd get from customers while working at a bar. They ranged from the awkward to the outright pornographic and left me stunned and wanting to storm that bar with a broad sword.

Gilpin makes very astute observations. For the average women leaving her 20's behind, these are very real self identity reflections, so I can only imagine what an actor has to grapple with.

You make a great point. It's such a judgemental industry so no wonder American actresses envy their French counterparts who are celebrated and given lead roles clear into older age. Personally, I found her words heartbreaking at being treated and looked at in such a reductive and predatory manner. I have learned, by having four younger sisters, the vast difference between being a man and a woman in this world, but it continues to blow my mind.

She has soo much to give as an actreess but rare opportunity to show. She can play both comedy and drama so well. Thats why her struggles are 10 times more feels like a battle. Struggles with expessing herself in her proffesion. She has so much energy to tell the world about her knowledge and skills yet no directors are lining up to give he a role. Betty is a gem at her job. Shame on them.

I love her GLOW character and there is just no need to invalidate her feelings about male gazes. She’s speaking about her experiences, and not yours. Great interview! Her descriptions are spot on and slightly brutal but could have been far harsher. I’m all for the harsh. The male gaze needs to go on the back burner. Some of the best movies come from females being heavily involved in the production process. Loved the message of “love yourself” was promoted on the set of Glow. You can feel that when watching it.

Betty Gilpin made a stupid movie absolutely entertaining. Her level of performance here will certainly invite her talents to be sought after in any dimension she wishes to express them.

Betty gilpin is a national treasure who should have more screentime...I'm even upset the hunt didn't do better so she could be a huge movie star. But I have to ask this even if a get flack for it...with the quite frequent amounts of nudity in glow isn't that a win for the patriarchy and every creepy producer betty mentions here? Seriously, that show is fantastic with or without a show of skin yet I always feel like nudity is there just for a ratings grab even if it's on Netflix. Where is the freedom in doing exactly what Hollywood always demands of women...I don't understand that at all. But, please, keep giving bett gilpin parts because she is an amazing talent.

Betty makes soooo many valid points that I never hear discussed. My question is; why do women need all this makeup/hair? It actually takes me out of the film when I see such coiffed hair and such immaculate makeup on a character that is supposed to have very little time to herself nor the resources to look that good. Why can't they just have a ponytail/messy bun (which is easy for continuity) and either no makeup or very little makeup? And before you say that it's so they don't look washed-out on film...then why do the men only require so little? I just don't get it.

All environments should include and allow experiencing, expressing and sharing the full range of humanity at it’s best and never be strangled through narrow and destructive definitions that keep people from being who they are at all. How do you expect anyone to be all they are if they can only be what you think and tell them to be while they squeeze that through the eye of a needle. It’s worth understanding that all people we ever interact with are foremost human.

It's interesting that as she criticizes the industry and the "patriarchy" for viewing her as a sex object that she also criticizes a producer for his looks. So if he looked like a movie star, then he could put his hand on her back? What is the criticism then? That he put his hands where they shouldn't be? Or that he wasn't good looking enough to do it?
