Yes, Betty Wright has been hitting those super sonic high notes long before Mariah. And she did it quite often in her music. Sadly, she never reached the commercial success as Mariah, but she's been hitting notes like that before Mariah was born.

I loved your reaction when you heard/saw her hit the first whistle note. Betty was the 2nd person I’ve ever heard hit a whistle note...Queen Minnie was the first.

There was actually a few before Minnie she just perfected it, Betty empowered it, and Mariah made it her own popularized it

Man, you are definitely catching some fire videos lately! This was so awesome when I saw it for the first time (about 3 years ago). Every now and then I come back to this clip because Ms. Betty Wright is a vocal beast. She sings on key, has a very wide vocal range, and she conveys stories and emotions through her works.

Betty was an awesome vocalist. Her whistle register and broad vocal range is right up there with Mariah and Shanice. The relatable lyrical content is a constant in her material.

Definitely react to the great Lisa Fischer's "How Can I Ease The Pain" live from the TokyoDome in 1992. Lisa was the subject of the film "20 Feet From Stardom". Lisa at the ripe young age of 61 is still alive and performing in and around NYC, she still has that incredible voice up to F6, and is still as beautiful as ever.

"I was earning my man while I was learning my man, something you young girls may not understand" That's the line that resonates with me from this song the most because too many women are out here not earning or learning their man and that's relationship fails. Even though Betty said this many years ago it's probably more prevalent today than it was back then. A lot of women today are very self centered. It's about their job, their education, their happiness...but the ongoing theme is that most of them who have this mentality are unhappy. So, it's not working ladies. Maybe, you should listen to Betty Wright. Earn your man and learn your man.

I still don’t know why Betty Wright’s not a household name. Her whistle range is more expressive and daring and accurate than any of them, all due respect to Minnie, Maria and the rest. I guess she lacked material and management. Shame. She had great presence and sincerity. She was funny, too!

Yes, Mrs Betty Wright's signature was hitting whistle notes. She was doing it long before Mariah. Unfortunately she never got the credit she deserved. But hitting whistle notes was one of her signature. You should do research of some of her other songs.
