Another piece of 1st class drama that proves,yet again,that nobody does it like the British. A beautifully gentle and genuine film that gets you hooked from the start. Thanks for posting ! Enjoyed it tremendously!😊

This film demonstrates how important it is for unhappy couples to have the courage to split up. Notice that the only time the husband shows any gentleness towards his wife or any concern for his son is as he is leaving. And she shows some softening towards him at that moment as well. It's clear to them both that they are doing the right thing. The ending is uplifting in the sense that we feel that all three members of the family will be happier now.

Such beautiful work in every way-- the timing and pace, the music, the beautiful colors, the sensitive acting, everything. And so many relatable moments, some of which I've only recently experienced, so the pain and joy, the contraction and expansion are a relief to behold, I feel understood. Thank you.

At 1:09:40 there is a deleted scene. (This is as best I can recall.) Ellen and Kathy are holding hands as they sit quietly on the bench. Ellen asks “did your mum know?” “No. But, my father knew. He were alright with it.” Then we hear others come upon the lane and they release hands. Then they get up and stroll arm in arm up the long staircase to the left. Then there is a wide shot of them walking close through the park together. It’s all very sweet. At the end Ellen is taking Victor on the train (which always represented freedom to me) to visit Kathy for a week! Victor, ever his mum’s supporter says, “you’re smilin’.” Indeed she is lad. You are going to your new home! They are Catholic so will not divorce, but they have separated amicably. Their only way forward at the time. Love this slow, sweet film.

A very moving and realistic portrayal of the tortured existences that had to be endured in 50's Britain, inspirational in that a current day version is still part of everyday life for many who live in a restrictive environment.

The essense of any relationship whether it be between a man & a woman or a woman & another woman is understanding, gentleness and kindness. Too many films are somewhat over sexualized, but this beautiful little gem of a story deliniates the most beautiful part of a love story.

I'm so glad the movie was made in a straightforward way. Very moving without gratuitous sex scenes just a gentle slightly sad love story. I think many women could identify with Barbara Marten's character. Barbara is actually quite beautiful in my opinion. I only wish I knew whether they ended up making a home together. 😊 Lovely to watch.

I don't understand why scenes have been deleted. Missing are scenes when the two women are left alone in the town hall and Kathy makes a very flattering comment towards Ellen. Afterwards, a walk that they both take has been cut in which Ellen explains to Kathy details of her relationship with her husband. Also, the conversation they have in the park is cut short when Ellen explains when she realized her feelings for Kathy and they both decide to be intimate. I think I'm missing other scenes. It's a shame

I have my suspicions, someone at one point censored more romantic declararions to make the film more palatable to those type of people, who always claim famous adults of the same gender from the past, who were known to have lived together all their adult life, were / and still are described by some as “Dear Friends”. It’s erasure.
@scds1082Ай бұрын
@@Sad_Bumper_Sticker I agree. It's making the film more palatable for mass audiences, who don't want to see the details of two women getting together. Also, the ending was a bit unclear to me: was the husband actually having an affair or did he use that as an excuse to seem more "manly" i.e., I am leaving because I have another woman rather than I am leaving because I know you love another woman.

@@mahnovchanka Yes, that is probably the reason. In Britain then and to this day, tenants have very few rights and tenancy agreements are very strictly weighted towards the landlord's rights. They specify no alterations, prescribing a particular colour for the walls, and no pictures, hooks, shelves, etc. This contrasts sharply with countries like Germany, where tenants have well-guarded rights so that they can regard their rented accommodation really to be `home`.

Great production design. This is recognisably the Britain of my childhood. The social fabric remained much the same from the 1820s to 1980 (mutatis mutandis, for instance, motorised road traffic, electricity, radio and television (before that, the music hall, the working-men's clubs , variety, rep) etc.), until it was ripped up utterly by thatcherism/the new right through the 1980s, manufacturing was destroyed and Britain was designated a `service industry` country, esentially financial services.
