When I was 12 years old 1972. He was signing autographs at a Celebrity baseball game Irvine Calif.. As I handed him Paper for an autograph, he was holding a whole sandwich in 1 hand, a beer in the other. He shoved the sandwich in one bite, held the beer in his lips and graciously signed autograph to me. He is a Big Man with a Big Heart.

He sure loved his daddy. One interesting story was when Max Jr indicated to dad that he wanted to box himself. Max Sr. , who was dead set against this, had to show Jr. what it was like to face a professional boxer. Jr. stuck with acting from that day on.

I read a story that Max Baer Jr's dad Max Sr's. punch as a boxer was so powerful that one of his opponents died from being knocked out, and the story indicated that the deceased boxers brain stem was broken loose. Max Jr.is a class act and a great actor.

@@NotMoriarty1 Yes, it was 2 men, but in both cases (especially the last) they cannot be definitively "accredited" to Baer Sr. Jr. has argued this point in defense of this dad for years, and I am persuaded he is correct. Others may and do disagree, but his having held the championship for so short a time seems to negate the reputed power of his punches, and highlights the frailties and weaknesses of some of his opponents. . My opinion.

Max Baer's movie, Macon Count Line, held the record for years as the lowest budgeted movie that grossed the most money. I think it was Blair Witch Project that shot it out of the saddle. MCL still has a cult following to this day. Also, Ode to Billie Joe, which he purchased the rights to turn it into a movie, made for TV I think as that's where I saw it, was brilliant. Ties up a lot of loose ends in the song. He is a stout one, too. Buddy Ebson credited him with saving his life on the set of BH, when a stunt went wrong and the old truck would have crushed him had "Jethro" not held it up off him. He's really quite a guy. One of my faves. No one could have played the part of Jethro with as much verve.

Actually I do believe Night of the Living Dead had grossed more but I could be wrong. That film costs all of 2500 dollars to make. It went on the make money in 77 different countries. It is up there for sure.

Also, its U.S.box office earnings -- 12-15mil --came after a decade. $30 mil internationally, but doesn't say in what span of time. In earnings in relation to costs of production ratio, It could very well be, but I read somewhere Macon County Line held that record, and have heard Baer say so himself in an interview. Interesting about Night..., though. Thanks for bringing it up. At any rate, Blair Witch Project, which looks like it was shot on a cell phone, kicks both their butts. LOL

Video quality, no problem. I grew up with old TV's that almost had perpetual vertical or horizontal roll. We had to adjust the picture almost every five minutes. None of us ever knew that all we had to do was put a new tube in it, because we never had new tubes. So this quality picture is even better than what we grew up watching. Thanks for uploading!

D.E.B. B , hey--We had the Same TV! The only Difference was, my pop did TV/Radio repair on the side; he Knew Which Tube prolly needed replacing. And ten year old Me got to go With him to the store and 'Help' him work the vacuum tube battery tester there, just as ubiquitous in the late 1950's as the ATMs are today!

Yes, I remember the tube tester well. Us kids would walk around the town on garbage day, looking for old TV's that were being thrown out, and would pull all the tubes out and take them home. Then dad would drive us to the Nedisco store (our electronics chain in northern NJ) and we'd test all the tubes, keeping the ones that seemed to have life left in them, but we never got new ones. Then, back home, to try them out. It basically stayed that way until I got into high school, when we finally got a newer Panasonic transistor TV.

Macon County Line did $30,000,000 at the box office. It cost only $225,000 to make. That's merit by any definition. Baer co-wrote, produced, and starred in the film. Two years later he directed and produced Ode to Billy Joe that returned over $36M on a budget of $1.1M. I'd say there's some merit there. That being said, with many thousands of people active in the movie business and very few at the top at any given time, I do not think Max Baer Jr has ever qualified as "big time". His bitterness more likely stemmed from getting almost no money from the Beverly Hillbillies show being syndicated.

I got to briefly speak with Max Baer, Jr. on a radio talk show, ca. 2003, when he was in the Nev. gaming business! I'm glad that he was able to become very successful, in alternative areas, instead of becoming a 'has been" in the acting profession! He still looks great today, at 85 years old! Best of Luck!

My great grandfather was a sports turf reporter for the LA Times. He knew Max Baer Sr personally. He celebrated with him with cigars when Max Baer Jr was born. I had an old photo in my baby book of a photo of Max Baer Sr and his wife in front of a Christmas tree from the forties. I always wondered it's significance. My mom told me that Max Sr had given it to her grandfather. Wish I still had it!

The rehearsals necessary to carry that show's timing off! The genius to stay in character. It might've all seemed slap-stick . . . but they all stayed in character . . . made it so that they weren't "slap-stick". They were innocence in a world that bordered on insanity. Genius . . . the authors, directors, performers. Even the laugh track was not out of place.

Even though Max Baer Jr was Typecast as Jethro and could no longer find acting roles, he moved over to producing and directing and was quite successful! His current net worth is over 50 million dollars!

Serves as a great example that the world changes and people have to adapt. He could have sat around and whined about it in poverty or done the sad alternative of showing up at county fairs as a has-been like so many other stars of the 60s have done. He chose to change with the times instead of cry about it.

Those were the days and I miss it so much. I wish people weren't so offended by everything today and could be more like we used to be in earlier times. The Beverly Hillbillies was among my favorite shows then & now. The Clampett's misinterpretation of everything made the show as funny as it was but they weren't dumb people. They simply had a no-nonsense approach to "LIFE".

Jack Benny’s Vault is a great radio sketch that was recreated for TV 📺 when Jack Benny guest starred on The Lucy Show. I have to agree that Jack Benny was the number one skinflint but Drysdale loved money like no other banker and I have to admit that he was one of the funniest characters (along with Granny) in the show.

My dad went to school in Sacramento with Max and he told me his dad Max Bear the fighter was great to all the kids in the neighborhood and once gave him and Max jr $20 to go out and have fun. $20 was a lot of money in the late 50s
