There are definitely better 80's movies, but it was refreshing to see one I've never seen before. My favorite part was "It's all our fault, not spending any time with him. Things are gonna different around here from now on." "Hey Dad?!" "Not now, son."

Mildly humorous -- I wonder if this was a direct to video, or maybe some cable movie channel movie?

From what I remember, it was direct to video during 1989 when it first released, but it did get a FEW movie theater showings locally in and around Los Angeles, but it didn't get into theaters outside California. It briefly showed up on cable later, typically during late hours after midnight, and the movie was acquired later on by Multicom entertainment for the 2006 DVD release (their logo is seen at the beginning of this video. They tend to buy movies a movie studio doesn't want anymore or has abandoned due to the studio going out of business and they put them on DVD, but they tend to get really fun cult films like this one).
