FILM DESCRIPTION:
What's that wisecracking young black guy (Eddie Murphy) in that beat-up Chevy Nova doing in lily-white Beverly Hills? He's Axel Foley, a Detroit detective who's been sent on involuntary vacation because he refuses to drop his intention of avenging his friend's murder. Warned by Beverly Hills police chief Ronny Cox to stay out of trouble, Foley nonetheless dogs the trail of above-the-law Steven Berkoff, the British crime czar who was responsible for the murder of Foley's friend. With the help of sympathetic local cops Judge Reinhold and John Ashton and lady friend Lisa Eilbacher, Foley attempts to corner Berkoff in his mansion, which leads to a wild slapsticky shootout.

I might be wrong in thinking this, but to me this looks like two real men sizing each other up, and respecting each other and becoming not only good friends, but the best of friends. Like for example Axel later tells Taggart that he had a good punch.

I like John Ashton's acting. I love his subtle acting skills, like how he shifts back and forth in the chair and raises his eye brows when Murphy replies with "foul mouth?". All very subtle but makes the character look genuine.

despite the comedic tone of the film, I always felt that its best moments were the places where the film slows down, and works to establish its characters. moments as in this scene when Murphy is unwilling to rat out other cops, as well as the scene towards the beginning in the bar, provide good scene with strong performances behind them. I was quite impressed that James Russo was able to make a memorable character out of Mikey, with little screen time.

Are they even good cops today. They do things that would have chaneges filed against them, but they stonewall average citizens from upholding their rights. Bunch of Gestapo/NKVD types. Murphy' character was the better man here..

Eddie Murphy has been better and he is going to become believable and tremendously blessed in all of his endeavors. God will always be there for you Eddie Murphy and I am looking forward to watching him in Coming 2 America on March 5.

You do know Cops have jurisdiction over certain places. But I don't that includes all over the US.

Cops have the right to carry a gun anywhere in the continental US. They don't have the power to arrest people everywhere, only Federal agents can do that. Carrying a weapon and arrest powers aren't the same thing.

And 10 years after this movie was released, little did I know that by April of 1994- I’d be living in LA... hanging out (in off days) in places like Beverly Hills seeing all the same buildings and locations used in the movie AND chillin’ in the Boulevard Cafe in the Beverly Wiltshire Hotel!! Incredible time - when LA area was still a fun place!😁

I liked Ronny Wilcox's character. He's a police LT probably with a lot of time and experience under his belt walking beats that runs a tight, but fair ship. He knows Foley is on to something and his intuition tells him Foley is a good cop so he pays lip service to 'following the rules' and gives Foley a little slack to do his investigating.
