As a movie buff, I have some fun facts! Okay, Beverly Hills Cop was written for Sylvester Stallone, but Stalone didn't want it to be so comedic. He rewrote the script himself. Since the producers and Stallone couldn't agree or see eye to eye on the tone of the movie, the producers decided to go with another lead. But Sylvester Stallone really believed in his rewritten script and went on to produce his version of the movie, retitled (Cobra). While the BHC producers met with several actors to star in Beverly Hills Cop before settling on Eddie Murphy. Cobra flopped, whereas BHC was the highest-grossing movie that year. By the way, In Beverly Hills Cop 2, the producers throw in several (f#@k you) nodes to Sylvester Stallone. They Cast his then-wife, Brigitte Nielsen, as one of the villains and then used a large poster of Cobra in the movie just to rub salt in the wound. Hollywood producers are VERY petty!

I believe that before Mr. Stallone the movie was going to star Mickey Rourke as "Elly Axel." That would have been a very different movie from "Cobra" or "Beverly Hills Cop."

@@promiscuous675 Beverly Hills Cop was written specifically for Sylvester Stallone. The order in which they offered and approached other actors for the role, I don't know.

@@theylied1776 My understanding is that the movie was originally pitched in 1981 as "Beverly Drive" a straight action flick and according to producer Jerry Bruckheimer Mickey Rourke was attached to the project with a holding contract worth $400K. Time passed as revisions and other preparations dragged on and Mr. Rourke left the project. It seems that it was at this time the movie was renamed "Beverly Hills Cop" and Mr. Stallone was attached, but what do I know you could well be right.

@@promiscuous675 Maybe, I don't know? I have never heard or read an interview with Jerry Bruckheimer talking about who they approached. I have only ever heard Eddie Murphy talk about how he got the role. That's the story he tells.

Thank you. A movie where Paul Reiser plays a decent guy, after "Aliens" I didn't know there was such a thing, shows what I know, it turns out he often plays decent guys. There are currently three Beverly Hills Cop movies, but there is a fourth scheduled for release in the near future. The entire soundtrack was enormously popular at the time, at least in England.

A 4th one is coming???? AWESOME. I certainly recognized several of the songs on the soundtrack. Paul Reiser was a good guy for years on Mad About You --- I loved that show!!! It was almost difficult for me to accept him as the bad guy on Aliens because of that.

I love this movie. When I saw it in theaters, Eddie Murphy was ONLY a comedian. I had no idea he could play a serious role in a serious movie - even though he did bring his comedian self along for the ride. Side note: In the part where Axel, Taggart & Billy are at Billy's place, Axel asks to use the phone. While he is in Billy's room using the phone he pulls the door closed just a bit to reveal a Sylvester Stallone Cobra Movie poster and Axel gave his "Axel Foley Laugh." The significance behind this is that Sylvester Stallone was first supposed to play Axel in this movie and wanted his name to be Axel Cobravinski and be called Cobra for short. Instead they went with Eddie Murphy and Stallone ended up making the movie "Cobra" in 1986. I like Cobra, but Beverly Hills Cop is a better movie. Also, I'm not sure I would have liked Stallone in this role. It would have made the movie very different and probably not as lovable, especially if he played the role like he played his role in Cobra. Then again, in an alternate universe where Stallone did star in Beverly Hills Cop and it's a straight up action hero kills a hundred bad guys kind of movie, lacking the charm and comedy of Eddie Murphy but having all the testerone and action of Stallone, it might have been a good movie too. Just very different.
@okchristina

Yes that certainly would have been a different movie!!! I haven't seen Cobra but I remember knowing it exists and my little friends that loved GI Joe also loved Cobra. ;)
@blakewalker84120
@blakewalker84120 Жыл бұрын
@@okchristina I think you're joking about GI Joe. But just in case, the Sylvester Stallone movie Cobra is not related to the GI Joe villains - just a coincidence that they share a name. I might put in a request to see you react to Cobra (1986). Or to the GI Joe movies (2009, 2013). I liked all 3 movies, but I also don't think any of them are especially good movies so probably not a top tier reaction option. Maybe save them for a rainy day, a decade from now, when you can't think of any new movies to react to but you somehow remember this comment...

Great movie. Martin Brest (director) was brilliant with mixing absolutely hilarious moments and then suddenly switching gears to extremely dark, serious moments. He does the same with a later movie he directed, Midnight Run starring Robert Deniro, Charles Grodin, John Ashton (Taggart from this movie), and Joe Pantoliano. Its a lesser known movie, but is a great fun road trip "not-so-buddy" film. Lol. Worth checking out. Also Danny Elfman did the soundtrack to the film. :)

Yeah, Perfect Strangers was an excellent sitcom. Bronson’s shtick was sort of taken as a poor man’s Mork from Ork knockoff, but I liked it probably more than Robin’s characterisation of Mork. Yes, they were both fish-out-of-water parts, but Balky was more relatable, as was his cousin’s reactions to the shenanigans more natural than Pam Dawber’s constant flustered resignation to the craziness.

Not many people pick Mr Wayans in this one. For another Eddie Murphy comedy you could try Boomerang (1992), with Eddie, Martin Lawrence, Halle Berry, Grace Jones, Chris Rock, Eartha Kitt, Robin Givens, David Alan Grier, and many more. Like what made Steve Martin’s Planes, Trains & Automobiles great, Eddie as the star comedian in the movie instead plays more of the straight role and let’s the other actors have the great lines. It also has fantastic sound design.

OMG I just looked it up and you're right! After having seen the video for Thriller like 100 times (welcome to the 80s) I thought I was remembering correctly. But I also just looked up the dates and Eddie wore his red suit less than a year after Thriller was released. So, obvs a direct influence. I think he was poking fun at himself and at MJ's ridiculous fashion choices (ridiculous as in a pop star dresses over the top and it's cool but only for them) both in his comedy special and this movie. Brilliant move, regardless!
