Yeah, I enjoyed all four people but there were also too many instances of stepping on toes. Simmons obviously the most guilty of it; I really wish he'd work on being able to let others talk more. He's not awful at it, but his only-child-ness always pops up from time to time. (I'm still annoyed thinking about how he cut off Key during a podcast and Key never ended up finishing his thought.) I thought he stepped on Wesley's toes most though.

100% agree. Beverly Hills Cop 2 is actually my favorite film of the 80s. Its the perfect sequel. Returning side characters with more to do. Way better action. More emphasis on plot since we already got to know everyone last time. Its more fun and it actually cared to take side characters from part 1 and change the formula of this one into a buddy cop film. I love it so much and because of all the Tony Scott touches, it has aged so well.

A bearer bond is an instrument that can be passed from person to person, and the holder (or bearer) of the instrument is considered the owner. Two good examples of a bearer instrument are lottery tickets (or really any kind of event ticket though an entertainment event ticket is technically a limited license) or a pawn shop receipt slip. Anyone holding the instrument is considered the owner, and they can be passed around freely and/or bought/sold.

Also, that's why it was such a huge thing in Die Hard, the fact that they were bearer bonds would make them a lot easier to fence later, after the heist. Their exchange would be a lot harder to trace than any other type of bond. Thus they had much higher value on the black market to Hans Gruber and his crew.

1:09:10 Bearer bonds were once a thing. The appeal of them was that they could be worth up to $10K apiece, so a full briefcase could plausibly hold about $14 million I guess. Whereas the same sized case could maybe hold about $800K in dollar bills. Hollywood has cheated a few times with the bag of money, but dollar bills take up more space than people think.

The movie was filmed over the summer of 1984 and Eddie Murphy had just turned 23, not 24. And he's like 5'9" 160 on a good day, no way was he ever going to be a macho character and that wasn't the point. But yeah, people today don't realize how big this movie or Eddie were at the time, you had to be there I guess, but he was possibly the most famous actor in the world 1984-85.

Wow, this was highest grossing that year? 1984 also had Gremlins, Indiana Jones & Temple of Doom, Star Trek III, and Ghostbusters, so that's saying something. I actually saw all of those in the theatre that year, too.

The original Beverly Hills Cop was a monster. It hasn't stayed in the public eye the way some others have, but BHC would've also been the top grossing movie in 1985, 1986, 1987, & 1988. It was the biggest Hollywood hit from winter 1984 to when Batman came out in summer 1989.

One surprising thing I do remember following the movie was that people couldn't wait to buy their Mumford shirts like the one Murphy wore in the movie. It was one of the all time great product placements in a movie, and studios must have caught on.

Eddie actually played it straight in BHCop. He did not phone it in. BHCop is actually dark if you really think of it. When his friend gets killed. That was real. Not funny death at all and when he was in the house trying to get Maitland. He really was in danger. No back flips to get out of trouble like Rey in Star Wars.

Axel knows all this, and gets by on street smarts and audacity. But that's what sells the movie. Part of acting and filmmaking is that even though we know how implausible the scene is, we buy it because we care about the character(s).

Herpes Simplex 10 might be my fav most rewatchable scene. I agree with Wesley, I don't feel that this line is homophobic. The joke was about the disease, so that the guy would be repelled enough to allow him entry. There is an undercurrent of homophobia, perhaps, but it isn't overtly homophobic dialogue. I also like when he mocks Chief Hubbard, at the LA station --- "Is this the man who wrecked the buffet, at the Harrow Club this morning?"

I think it's a shame so much time is spent on the matter of 'Was Axel Foley Gay'. To be clear, I don't mind whether he is or isn't. It won't make me see the film in a different light or like it any more or less. But I have to state the obvious here: do all four of these people discussing the film forget that this is a trilogy? As much as they/we may want to forget the third one as it clearly was nowhere near as good as I or II, one thing in Beverly Hills Cop III is the flirting/chemistry between Axel and the character played by Theresa Randle. So is it a case that Axel is gay in Beverly Hills Cop I but straight (or bi maybe?) by the time of Beverly Hills Cop III? Maybe you're reading way too much into way too little as far as a movie where the main character has a job to do and sets out to do that. Take the Jason Bourne films. If you didn't see the first or second where there is the romantic element and instead saw the third one (the Bourne Ultimatum) or/and the last one (Jason Bourne) with Matt Damon, to the best of my recollection there's little to nothing at all about any romance in either. So if/when Bill Simmons does a rewatchable on either of those movies, will he/Wesley Morris be questioning Jason Bourne's sexuality for lack of seeing him getting it on with anyone - woman or man - in the film?

I love the Rewatchables but they just spent about an hour of the 90mins discussing the racial and homophobic politics of a movie made in 1984. Im highly liberal and support all equality but at some point it doesn’t make sense to go back and legislate movies or art that we’re appropriate for the time.
