Former rental employee here...if you’re looking for a late model used car with low mileage, definitely consider a formal rental car through one of the agencies car sales lots. They cherry pick the best cars from their fleet to sell directly because it’s their name/reputation on the line. If you buy a used car from a dealership, look for that “previous rental car” note on the paperwork, and know that THAT car was rejected by the rental car company as a car they want to sell on their lot. And, most used cars at dealerships are former rentals. They rarely keep trade-ins, and usually sell those at auction.

@thomasarias7733 жыл бұрын
@@johnsondoeboy2772 that’s a good way to go. And if you’re feeling generous, call a local rental branch first. Ask them about car sales. Let them “refer” you to the salesman who covers their branch. They’ll get a referral bonus.

How about a rental that is at a toyota dealer that is also toyota certified?
@thomasarias773 Жыл бұрын
@@erics3527 don’t know. But Toyota dealerships, like all the others, get the bulk of their used cars from dealer auctions. Many of the cars at those auctions are former rental cars. Those cars were all rejected to be sold at the rental car sale lots. Take from that what you will.

I only have good things to say about the 2007 Camry I bought as a used rental. It was less than a year old and had fewer than 20K miles. Now it has 175K miles without any major repairs. I recognize that I've been fortunate, and I certainly wouldn't argue with common suggestions about checking out any used car before purchase, but I don't think making blanket judgements about used rentals is useful.
@oldtimefarmboy617Ай бұрын
Any time you buy any used car you are also buying any problems they may have had, small or large, rental or not. So ANY time you buy ANY used vehicle you should have it checked out to see if there are any serious and potential costly problems with it. That is a blanket judgement that is based on facts (i. e. truth). So yes, you can make blanket statements about stuff.
@nodak815 жыл бұрын
Way better to buy one of these instead of spending thousands of dollars more to buy an off-lease car from a dealer. Rentals may or may not have more minor issues like broken switches or something but generally they're just fine and any issues they do have are easily fixed. People act like the average car renter drives like a madman, which just isn't true. Sure SOME people abuse the car but most people drive it normally or even conservatively because they didn't buy the extra insurance and don't want to risk damaging anything. I bought a '13 Impala that was an ex-rental car and it was almost perfect. Only issue was that the CD-player wouldn't eject a disc if you put one in it. Very minor issue in my book.

Rental cars are some of the best maintained cars out there, WHY, they don't want them breaking down while rented out. Many Rental companies will keep a car less than a year and sale with low miles. Big chain rental companies clean and inspect cars after each rental. We just purchased our second rental car from Chevrolet dealer. First ran and looked great and traded for a new car. Just purchased another rental, a GM Certified Used car, 2018 Chevrolet Equinox Premier with 22000 miles on it. Clean Carfax and runs and looks like it just came off the showroom. Then again only time will tell.

I wondered about the statement about milage being 10k to 50k until I see this video is from before the pandemic. Starting in 2020 most rental companies were force by production shortages to keep their cars until 60k miles. It’s only recently that they have been able to secure enough new inventory to go back to the old system.
@ritabare92532 жыл бұрын
It’s probably not as bad of an idea these days since most cars have safety mechanisms to prevent over revving, redlining it in neutral and dropping it into drive but renters often floor the accelerator and carelessly run over pot holes and speed bumps. As for maintaining them, the rentals always get the lowest grade cheapest oil filters and minimal maintenance. I worked for Hertz. Do you think vehicles get synthetic oil? No, but a 5w20 synthetic blend with cheap bulk house branded oil filters. Sometimes we wouldn’t even change the filter.

There is no company that knows about cars more than the owners of said cars. There are laws that say any accident causing over $500 in damage must be reported. There is no law saying who the judge of that is. Thousands of accidents go unreported every day. There is no way of telling the car you are interested in has a full and honest accident report. In fact many cars have been "TOTALED" by an insurance company that really don't have that much damage at all that would affect the safety of the car. Bumpers and fenders don't play a part in road worthiness.
