One reason I continue to follow you is that you do not exude false charisma - that glow that causes some to feel flutters. Your gift is that you are a teacher, and a good one. Thanks for that.

I'm afraid that lack of charisma and reluctance can become the new charisma in the spiritual marketplace.

That makes sense. Charisma, not always but very often, seems to be inversely proportional to integrity and substance in my experience.

What is charisma? Its simply the absence of entangled life energy. If all your mental attention is entangled by fear, confusion, frustration and doubt...you will have very little energy to project unto others. An enlightened person is charismatic by nature and has strong eye contact...the eyes dont wander around as if lost in a labyrinth.

I had a martial arts teacher who, when he found out that I was studying Buddhism, said that I should just become his student, that he could teach me what I needed to know. Yeah, no. I wasn’t a member of that dojo much longer after that.

Interesting that you mentioned Ama. I went to one of her gatherings with a friend many years ago. The moment I walked into the room I got this feeling in my heart and started to tear up... totally unexpected as I was feeling neutral about everything prior to. I did not go through any of the pre or post Ama stuff you mentioned. I never followed her at all, but I won't forget the feeling of walking into the room where she was.

I had a grade 10 English/drama teacher way back in the olden days who told us that people don't 'have' charisma on their own. He said that other people give it to them. So, if that is the case, I guess that what some people have is the knack of getting other people to give them charisma. Or something like that. I believe 'projection' is what the kids call it these days. Maybe.

Most charismatic teachers have identified and appealed to DESPERATE people. It's a feedback loop between the guru and the disempowered masses.

Interesting video with amusing anecdotes about various religious leaders whose charismatic public images rang false for you at some point Brad. I am reminded of how when I read books by Carlos Castañeda and Chögyam Trungpa, the first thing that struck me about either man was that in their books both expertly taught their readers how to recognise and avoid many different forms of religious dogmatism and personality cults. While running the religious movements they founded to preserve their teachings, Tensegrity and Vajradhatu respectively, as the exact types of dogmatic personality cults they constantly warned about! I also find it telling that Trungpa fell just as hard as Castañeda there, despite his credentials within the religion he taught being impeccable in sharp contrast to Castañeda being a fraud and an impostor. From now on I fully expect to be disappointed by anyone I admire at some point, even if they aren't religious leaders or other public figures, and instead of getting depressed or upset I use that as an opportunity to improve upon their examples.

I have seen some pretty charismatic figures on You Tube/online who marketed themselves as gurus or smart people and I personally found that alot of the time when I observed these people that I eventually reached the point where I said to myself that there are sort of things that I don't really like about those people and also with many of these people I got to the point where alot of the time I started to have a lot of trouble stomaching or listening to them anymore.

I grew up around Stephen Gaskin (1935-2014); he was a very charismatic hippy spiritual teacher. I learned how to do public speaking from watching him give talks. I have been told I have charisma (when I give talks), so I think it is something that can be learned. Unlike many "spiritual leaders," Stephen did not want people to think of him as some great, enlightened person. I'm not one of those either. I don't think charisma has anything to do with spirituality or enlightenment. It is just something one does or does not have, in certain situations. So there.

The most charismatic guy I've ever met was a small-time con artist who used to hang around this community. Maybe he was a sociopath or something, but his gift was to utterly believe everything that came out of his mouth, so people just followed along with whatever he said. I guess people who think of themselves as being skeptical (me) are just as easily taken in as everyone else, but that was a learning experience.

I think charisma is very subjective. I've been watching a lot of documentaries about the cults that have popped up in the past decade or so (NXIUM, Mother God, Twin Flame, etc) and I am continually flabbergasted by how people find the leaders charismatic/compelling etc.

Found the title of this video a bit misleading. This is because there are brilliant, truthful Teachers with charisma but there are also brilliant truthfulTeachers with no much charisma. In the same ways there are false, falsehood Teachers but with such a charisma in them that certain kind of audience is enthusiastically enchanted and convincing of having found a kind of supreme absolute truth.

Good grief! Do zazen, the rest is word salad. Follow Brad's advice on zazen in his books, and ignore space cadet Buddhism. Dogen wrote self contradicting nonsense, Watts wrote cloudy, convoluted meanderings, Brad's work is excellent and really hits the core of ''practice''. But everything written about Zen are threads of an unravelling sweater and they leave you with nothing but a loose handful of string.🙃 Ask a fish to teach you about water.🤣
