@@ollllj tbh how difficult it is to code or even design graphically biome transitions that make sense is why a lot of games who are pseudo-openworld opt to have biome transitions happen "off screen" . Actually designing a "plains to icy mountain" transition visually in a way that isnt just "oh there's snow now" is pretty challenging on its own. (I'll credit, Skyrim did it pretty ok for its time. Then again 90% of that place is snowy mountains anyway xd)

@@worldiefeard8396 I haven't played Valheim, yet, but I've seen that it has a biome that is "partially snowy", as in, patches of snow lie on the grass, but the grass is still visible. You could totally place such a biome between the tundra and the plains biome, and perhaps interpolate the snow amount as you get closer to the tundra.

When we talk about a sphere, we're referring to a zone covering the entire planet. Like the atmosphere is the zone of gases surrounding the entire earth. In the same way, the biosphere is the zone where life exists (from the ocean to land to skies) all over the planet. Whereas a biome is a specific environment of plants and animals, like ocean, tundra,, desert, etc.

On Ark Survival Evolved there's a frozen area aptly called "murder murder snow" - and it means it! You need the Fur set (and high quality too!) to be able to go there, as well as an otter around your neck for extra warmth

@@slewone4905 For Norwegians it means time when ground is covered in white stuff and sun never rises, temperatures are about the same as in Norwegian summer though, but less mosquitoes and more heavy metal. For us Finns it means that all the lakes are frozen so instead of swimming we run naked around in that white stuff. :)

The "Murder Snow" in the Ark: Survival Evolved map "Ragnarok" makes this skit look like child's play, lol! I ended up building a tavern in that inhospitable frozen hellscape, and made it known to the rest of the server that it's a community destination, a warm respite in one of the most unforgiving parts of the map. It became really popular, and people volunteered to pay for their stay by donating fuel for the fires. We even created a community chest that was a "take an item, leave an item" chest. People honored it while others were present, but one or more assholes ended up raiding the chest when the tavern wasn't manned. Even one of them stole all the fuel for the fires, so I ended up having to make it a private property open to the public only while I was there. Real shame that one or two people ruin it for everyone else. Oddly enough, wayyyy back, before the biomes update, I made a community lodge deep in the forest on an official PvP server. I would tell new players they could make their way there for supplies to get a boosted start. Unbelievably, I came back a year later, and the lodge not only still stood after the biome update (was built in a spot that just by coincidence was not touched by the map rework), but an entire tribe had formed around it, and they were dedicated to helping new players. I had a sort of "return of the king" moment when I approached it, and they were like, "Holy shit! You're the guy that built the place?!" After all, it tells you who built a structure, and there I was, the original owner. The fact they kept the tradition going brought honest to goodness joy to my heart, and restored some of my faith in humanity. Especially given it was a PvP server.
