That's rarely the problem for me unless the actors are whispering incoherently. The only film I had an issue with music was MEDIEVAL. Its historical about Czech religious uprising. Hussites had one signature song that made crusaders throw away their weapons and run away even before they saw Hussites. But in Medieval, they make music so loud you can't even make up the words. I understand that it was shot in English and international viewers wouldn't understand Czech, much less old Czech. But that's what subtitles are for... The movie was horrible, not recommended, but you can find the song under "Kdož sú boží bojovníci"

Saw an interesting analysis of this recently! In addition to various changes in balancing mixing of music/FX vs dialogue, their theory was that with the shift from using boom mikes to mostly lav (lapel) mikes for dialogue pickup, the perceived need in the industry for actors to get elocution training has largely disappeared? Hence the issues with "whispering & mumbling", which drive so many of us batty! There's been a change in performance style, too - modern directors usually prefer naturalism (complete with cross-talk & mumbling) whereas if you think back to 1950s movies, the performance style is much less naturalistic, often verging on over-acting & over-pronunciation. It's quite a curse not just for hard-of-hearing folks, but also ESOL viewers; may need to turn on first-language subtitles to follow. Even people like me struggle, who have neurological difficulties separating out background vs foreground sound... The suggestion of being able to have separately controllable dialogue track & background tracks when watching at home is AWESOME! It's all mixed as separate tracks when producing, so surely leaving it accessible in that way shouldn't be hard in this digital age...?

@@arrowghost depends on how old you are. some of the earliest games used the same software used for movies and such and so the music at 0 was mute, then one tick up from that was 10 and was about half the volume of people speaking. 60 was the same volume as people speaking at 100, and at 100 was quite a bit louder than speech at 100. then video games went and automatically adjusted all sliders to about 30 for default for the music, 100 for speech. later they made their own software for the sounds and is was comparable levels. Direct X let people cut costs for making video games and so everything used it as it let small studios have as good of stuff as the big ones, and the big ones spend more on other areas. then with the advent of DirectX trying to not only be the thing for video games but also for movies and TV shows and are doing the movie thing with the music being extra loud.

@@autumnatic I like the variety. Orchestra alone is nice but boring. FF14 is a JRPG that has done cross overs with games like Monster Hunter and other non FF games. It's gonna have a Fall Guys cross over here soon. Soken does a superb job of matching the music to the situation. The rock songs are definitely a great change of pace for many encounters. Sometimes it reminds me of my childhood and movies like the 1986 Transformers movie (the only good one).

What I hate is when they have separate music, ambience, cinematic, UI, special effect, and voice volume sliders, so you set things to your priority annnd then they decide X sound is going to be on a different slider because they want to make absolutely sure that the player hears this bit of music or sound effect... and they're just going to ignore your settings. Like if they suddenly decide this in gameplay thing is going to act on the Cinematic trailer... which I have turned up. -_-
