Almost 60% of Americans say they plan on having a cookout this Memorial Day weekend. But there's a danger you should be aware of: how safe is your grill scraper? The metal bristles can fall off, and if ingested, can cause serious medical issues. Chef Shane McBride, owner of the restaurant Pig Beach, shared some alternative grill cleaning options with Inside Edition's Alison Hall. An onion, a lemon or a dish towel may be safer options than a wire brush.

@MrDeviousdom

It's obvious that most of the people that barbecue don't know how to properly clean their grill. You see those wire brushes full of soot and burned food. The best way to clean the grill is with a handheld wire brush and a small bucket of water. Get the grill nice and hot dip the brush in the water and then scrub for a couple seconds right on the grill. Dip the brush again and repeat. Both your brush and your grill will be perfectly clean with minimal effort
@HiThisIsMine

You can also use 97% isopropyl alcohol to clean the grill. Use an induction cook top at the lowest setting until its lukewarm, then apply it over the grill with a towel or something. It works like magic. It dissolves all the organic matter and residue, leaving your grill looking brand new. P.S: Isopropyl Alcohol is flammable. Dont use it near any flames, or it will catch fire. Use it with caution. Also, clean with some wet and then with dry towel afterward as isopropyl smell quite a bit.

My best friend got one lodged in his throat and had to have it surgically removed. Had to wait a week for "emergency" surgery. Can't imagine the pain and discomfort for that long

I'd recommend the Grill Daddy or whatever it's called, it's a mesh type of sponge with a firm handle from the popular sponge makers. You soak it in water and hit a hot grill. The steam helps clean off the grill. Works amazing! The back side has a scraper but no wire bristles so you can get tough spots too. Really solid option. I like to use an onion anyway for tradition but the Grill Daddy always cleans it really well.

This is why Brendan from Santa Cruz Medicinals recommends using an onion to clean the grill because it cleans the grill of any seed oils, it also adds a nice flavor to the burger and it also doesn’t leave a mess on the grill

In Argentina we use brushes made of Palmyra, it's natural and less dangerous than metallic wires, also we use paper once the grill is hot, but should be careful with the heat

You can also spray them with oven cleaner, put them in a trash bag overnight, and wipe and rinse clean the next day. Just don’t do this when it’s still hot and on the grill.

Bro I thought that it was a parasite from the meat stuck on the grill 😭 In retrospect, that doesn’t make sense bc the heat would kill the parasites/bacteria 💀
@HiThisIsMine

I thought the same. But my thought process was that some people don’t clean their grills and flies contaminate the grill afterwards. Bad for you or not after it’s cooked off, I wouldn’t put it past IE to sensationalize it regardless.

@@dillarddillard-p4e - If you cook your steaks beyond medium rare, you’re not really enjoying the steak. Don’t yuk it until you experience it and there’s nothing dangerous about it since the inside hasn’t been exposed to bacteria. Burgers should be cooked more medium, and pink inside a burger doesn’t mean it’s “raw”. That said, even if the burger is rare, the outside is fully cooked and the temperature on the metal grates is much higher and definitely would cook off anything living.

We use a Solaire grill. It uses infrared technology that gets very hot. It cooks at 1100 degrees on high hot. That’s more than double a typical gas grill. To clean the grates after everything turns to ash we use a “V” grooved tool designed specifically for that grill surface. It gets down deep into the channels & scrapes everything out. No wire brush is used on it. It never wears out because it’s made of 306 stainless steel like the grill surface. It’s the last gas grill we’ll ever own. It has a lifetime warranty. Ours just turned 18 years old & it looks as good at 18 than it did when it was brand new. So keep using those grills that might have worms on them. Or clean the grates with a steel brush.

Use a magnet to pick up pieces of metal bristle. More importantly, use better utensils such as a scrubber with a metal coil, a pumice stone or even a ball of foil does the job well!

While the grill is still hot use thick steel wool to scrape it. Steel wool will not break off and leave pieces of itself on or in the grill. When the grill is hot it is easier to scrape food off of it.

Nylon folks... You can use the meal ones, but if you do, always, always follow behind it with nylon or something non-metallic. Onion, nylon, and all sorts of things other than nylon work pretty well, but obviously, a visual inspection also is a must since even the nylon bristles can come off.

Years ago I saw a couple bristles stick to the grill. I haven't bought a brush since. Usually I just get the grill good and hot to carbonize everything, then scrape it with a metal spatula. After that, an oiled cloth does the trick.

This usually happens with grills that aren't hot and cheap brushes. Also, none of these tips a new. People were cleaning grills with foil and newspaper since I was a kid. I've seen plenty of people do the onion thing. I use a grill stone sometimes too. I've even tried the grill "brush" with the rings on it. I've used them all with no problem.

I feel this common sense that these brushes fall apart over time. That’s why always look at my grill for these bristles and also bang on grates to knock down any bristles off that I may have missed. Use your eyes, because a potato,onion or lemon doesn’t scrub off baked on burnt cheese, chicken skin, built up bbq sauce, etc etc etc. I scrub then I look.

A hard wood spatula works well too, over time the grates char in grooves that help make it easier to clean

I just burn off the grill till it's matte black with soot and scrape each grate with a knife or spatula until it's nice and shiny black. Seaon with a brush of oil to create the carbon layer and it's good to go. Never used a bristle, nor have I thought it would be a good idea.
