That old M88 definitely sounds the best to me. I wonder how an M201 would work out here - they have been a standard desk mike in BBC radio since about 1970.

Great test! Finally a guy who really knows how to test mics ... especially "S" and so on is important ...

Hello Mr. Brown - I totally agree with you. The identical DYNACORD DD800 vintage microphone has been my favorite microphone for many years. Beside the SM58 up to microphones of AKG, EV, etc. I already tested many microphones. But not even Neumann sounded as silky as the DD800. Thanks for the great performance - you have a fantastic voice. Stay healthy, all the best!

Oh wow that vintage M88 just has the most beautiful proximity effect and balance. Sounded better than the Earthworks imo, it was perfect. I was so down to buy a current production one until you plugged one in. I think the old one sounded a lot better. Very similar fundamentally, but all the extra magic somehow was gone. Proximity sounded not as alive and beautiful, and the breathing and handling noise wasn't something to write home about either. Shame really. You have an outstanding voice btw, and I very much enjoyed watching this video! Thanks!

A great microphone! Ive used mine for 30 years plus now. Quite special on vocals and an easy fix on an accoustic piano.

Something of a dynamic gem from 1962! As you imply, you have to get to know it how to use it, but it's yet to be beaten really.

I'm thinking of buying a new M88 (with popshield ;-) ) for my home studio, also the M201 for general duties - but yes if they still made the old one I'd go for it like a shot! Anyway the new one has a lot going for it, nice rich sound

Thanks for these great great video reviews! Very very helpful, as the V90r as well as the M88 were possible candidates for me. After watching your various comparisons, especially with the older models, my search goes on. Another very interesting line of dynamic microphones is the MD100 Line by Microtech Gefell. These are pretty obscure and expensive, so there's not much info to be found online, so that might be interesting for you to check out. Best regards - Simon

The Earthworks SR314 gets used more if I'm going to record anything but for rough and tumble everyday gigs, I still use the M88.

I'm guessing that the Beyer could effectively double for instruments too. Like brass... trumpets/trombones/saxes. And probably do a decent job on guitar cabs, too. Would you say it's rugged enough for those jobs?
@anonymusum
@anonymusum 6 жыл бұрын
You even can use it for kick drum. It´s a great allrounder mic and it is really rugged. It was Phil Collin´s vocal mic on all his tours.

Hi Anton. Really enjoy listening to your mic reviews. I have many different mics I enjoy .. Like the electro voice RE 410. I have had the beyerdynamic TG M88 for a while. I have recently started to use it again and I can now see why its almost £300. It has some nice punchy lows as well as sweet night's. I do have to eq it bit. I use a AER Compact 3. Do you know if the original M88 has been discontinued?

Здравствуйте Anton, посоветуйте для записи вокала динамический микрофон пожалуйста, цена не имеет значения, хочу жирную нижнюю середину и низа хорошие, хотел м 88 купить, но посмотрел видео и понял, что он опасный для вокала)

The M88 is an outstanding dynamic mic IMHO and the fact it was released in 1962 is astonishing. For me, the SR40V is like a condenser update - clearer, faster, with a cleaner bass but if you take into account the decades between them, and the price difference, you'd be forgiven for thinking that not that much has changed!

Seems the SM 58 beats them alll due to lack of bass boost, we don't want that for singing.

It's a shame that you are blowing out your preamp/Interface constantly in those tests. That makes them quite obeselete really. What you are doing is (would be!) fantastic if you would take the time to get the tech right (and use a higher quality preamp). Respect a proper gain structure, invest in a good interface like a Tascam UH-7000 or so and you'll have everthing you need to produce terrific videos!

Yes, the supporting gear is not up to the quality of some of the mikes but funds are limited and the essence of what I'm trying to show comes through, I feel. These are mostly stage mikes and will be plugged into lesser gear than I'm using. Earthworks produces a mic preamp, I believe so maybe I'll drop them an email!!!

Anton Browne oh yeah the ZERO DISTORTION TECHNOLOGY PREAMP also refered as „a wire with gain!“ that‘s on my radar too💸😓 but after the sv 33 i have to do a lot of busking before i can get it! maybe you‘re first to do a review 😂
