3 years on from the videos creation, I'm really happy it captured your beaming allure and excitement to demonstrate such a fantastic microphone.

Recently i bought sm58, and very satisfied for my voice

Just thought I'd revisit after three years, I forgot to mention that when using headphones and auditioning a mic this way or for general use in the studio try flipping the phase and see if it gets better or worse (to the person listening on the headphones while performing something with acoustic "leakage" into the headphones combined with the output of the headphones into their ears singing or playing an acoustic instrument.). Surprisingly many mics seem to be opposite phase of the headphones, so if there's a way to flip the phase in the monitor channel of the mic being used by Singer or instrumentalist who is going to hear both acoustic sound and sound back in the earphones I found it's good to have them be able to hear the truest sound so it doesn't alter their performance artificially.

Could you do one with an M201 vs SM58? I really like the sound of 201s on vocals and most people these days seem to think they are only intended for snare drums.

around 12:00 really tell a big part of the story in the sibilance where the Beyer is sweet and smooth and truer than the SM (the EW seems way too muted to tell, at least on the iMac speakers. Architecture (and weight of the element) of diaphragm mics always have their own resonances that make the highs less accurate, and condensers are almost always way too hyped in the highs (left over from the days we needed plenty of pre-emphasis for loss which isn't such an issue, in fact the opposite issue in digital pathways with highs especially needing to be smoother and truer these days). Ribbons are the only True microphones ;)

Getting good at using the Proximity Effect in ribbons if properly done will change your life! Most mics (condensers) try to do the work for singers - hyped highs making anyone sound 'seasoned' but putting a false color or patina on everything they sing (or play).

ello all right, my name is Marcos, I'm Brazilian, I watch your channel in search of knowledge in microphones, I bought a Beyerdynamic TG V90r, I have some doubts can you help me? I noticed that it has a lower gain than the Shure Beta. 58a , is this normal ? Do I need to pass this microphone through some pre before the soundboard? What do you think of his quality? I sing only in the church where I live, thank you very much if you can answer.

Hello, yes the V90r has a lower output, due to its ribbon design. I have found that my mixer has enough gain, but you can buy a CloudLifter or SubZero MB-1 Booster (less expensive) to boost the mic if you feel you need it.

@@AntonBrowne and do you think it has the same or better quality than the shure beta 58a? Thank KZbin

Its sensitivity is lower than that of the sm7b. The sensitivity of the sm7b is - 59dbv/pa, while the sensitivity of the v90r is - 61dbv/pa. This microphone is also the one with the lowest sensitivity I have ever seen. You only need a better preamplifier to drive it perfectly. Now I use the neve 1073 to cooperate with the v90r, and the sound is very good

Thanks. Your videos are thorough, and you know exactly what you are doing. I'm a soundengineer, and make my Living from it, and I'm always interrested in hearing different mics. I would love to hear what you think about the AKG C535, the old one (!). In case you can't find one, I'll mail you one, as long as you return it. Oh, and have you compared a new 58 with your old one?

Nick Nayme I hope you don’t mind a reply from the community as I am a long time owner and happy user of C535s, three of them of varying ages. Until I got a Neumann KMS105, the C535 was my favorite vocal microphone and I still absolutely love it. It does everything well, is not terribly hyped by the standards of vocal mics and is very flattering on both male and female vocals. Also, I have used all of mine for decades with no failures ever. Julio Iglesias and the Beegees preferred this microphone for many years and they can afford anything. I give it a solid 5 out of 5 stars.

It sounds elegant and crisp. I guess there´s one thing one should consider: ribbons are used mainly in the studio. So you can adjust the proximity pretty well and handling noise doesn´t matter. I like Beyer mics a lot. The M88, M201, TG-X81 or the MCE82 are all great mics and their ribbons are nearly unrivaled. Thanx for the test!
