Huge fan of the MC930. I've got a pair of them that I use for Live Sound and they never cease to impress me with how natural and clean they sound. Their unhyped character along with super clean off-axis response helps so much when working with Jazz or Classical artists.

Another great review. For my money, Beyer doesn't do "sleepers," they do _great,_ microphones. So many absolute classics; the M-201, M-380, M-88, M-160, M-260, just so many great microphones to cover such a broad range of applications. That said, the sE mic punched way above it's weight class and sE in general deserves their props for making really good mics that I think are being overlooked due to their affordability. Also, I was not surprised that the SM-81 also sounded great because every Shure mic does and you can't go wrong with their 81, their 137 or 141 SDC's.

It's possible that Beyer doesn't have sleepers. I just don't hear anyone in online content creation talk about them. So in my perspective these mics are underrated, just like the sE stuff. I also recently picked up a 141 from Shure which I can't wait to try out.

I’ve enjoyed your videos forever now. All your sound tests sound good. I think ALOT of people would agree with me that you should make videos of on the microphones you have making presets or show us how you eq and compress basically what settings you use to get them to sound good cause it it’d be easy to follow along how well you explain things. Another suggestion is I think it’d grow your channel if you also started doing IOS videos. I have the Samson q2u and struggling to get a good sound for vocals on iOS it’s easier in mac. iPad or iPhone tips are basically the same thing. Thanks for all your detailed hard work ❤

All of my recordings here are raw and unprocessed, so if that's the sound you're going for, it's all about getting the audio as clean as possible before you hit record: shut off noisy devices, use the polar pattern to reject reflections / background noises, get a good placement of the mic in relation to the sound source... Listening to the comparison on phone speaker is funny. I heard all mics as quite distinct UNTIL you got to the Neumanns. The sound of this mic and the sounds of both of them became pretty much indistinguishable. Compared to other sticks before the N, it's surprising how smooth and less bright this mic turned out. A definite favourite.... on the phone speaker. Need to re-listen on pc later...

I really appreciate the mic comparisons and all the tests, instant subscribe. A mic that I was looking at, but a little skeptical of, is the PreSonus PM-2. At about $130 the frequency response is a little wobbly but still SHOCKINGLY flat...I record a lot of classical instruments so that's a win in my book, but there must be drawbacks somewhere. I would love to see you do a review on that mic.

The 930 is an under-promoted microphone, and I’m not sure why. I was sent a pair of these to try when on the road with Julio Iglesias as he was using a Beyer vocal condenser at the time. They found a home as drum overheads. Its rare complete lack of hype makes it ideal for many such uses. Toms and snare sounded best of all in the 930s. Lovers of the Neumann KM184 will be right at home with the 930.

Ah, I'm in a pickle. Can't decide between NGT 3 (350 $ - used), Oktava mk012 (350$), Beyerdynamic MC930 (470$) and WA-84 (380$) for streaming/online lessons. My setting is untreated room with dogs barking outside the house. I would work in front of my PC. Do you have any suggestions?

I hate mics that you need a tool to change settings. DIP switches are annoying. That being said, that mic has a really nice low end. The sm81 and KM184 were the only ones that were comparable. The 184 sounded closest to me. Great sounding mic.

Yeah if you're constantly changing them, I imagine that would be a pain in the rear. For someone like me who just sets it and forgets it, I like it because I'm less likely to accidentally hit one of the switches.

I have never used an ELAM 251 so I can't really determine any alternatives to it. I'd need to have it and be able to do side by side comparisons.

Sounds good - very neutral and I bet it takes EQ nicely. OK, the SM81 fits that too, at a lower cost, and the KM184 is pretty much the gold standard for SDC, albeit at a premium price. As others point out, there's not a lot of improvement vs. price with most mics once you pass a critical threshold. That's about $300. I think the selling point here is the extremely flat response, but you're gonna have to be careful with placement especially with voice, and it doesn't like to be knocked around. I really did like how it sounded on the electric guitar, but for acoustic I'd like something with a bit more upper air. SDC market is crowded and there are a lot of good choices these days.

The conclusion/recommmendation is absolutely true concerning the se electronics and the shure. It's like it seemed to be for myself while listening, before viewing the final impressions. Liked the beyer, it is made in Germany, so 😊.... but as mentioned, the se and the shure are very good too, the beyer with more base, fuller sounding, the other two slightly more "brilliant", at least for my ears, listening on YT.

Thanks very much for sharing your thoughts. The MC930 sounds a bit smoother than the sE electronics SDC's, and the MC930 and SM81 sound a bit different, but we're splitting hairs. Many people will be more than happy with one of the sE electronics mics or the Shure mic, while simultaneously if they have the money many people will love the Beyer.

That's very high praise for the microphone. I do think it sounds quite good. Gateron blue are pretty similar to Cherry MX Blue so it's kind of an apples to apple comparison, but one is a honey crisp while the other is a cosmic crisp.

Theres deminishing returns on good mics. You can generally tell that the things around $300+, maybe 200 ish, sound a lot less tinny than the $100 ish ones. But comparing the $300+ to the $1000+, the difference is insanely minimal. The best studios in the world may be able to make use of the benefits but definately not needed for normal use.

The differences tend to become a lot more noticeable when you build a multitrack arrangement track by track - using the same mic to lay down every part. Vocals and guitars ranging from 75-100 dB don't push these mics very far, either.

They sound great when they work. Lost signal on one. Had it repaired by Beyerdynamic warranty repair folks twice totaling over $400. One is still around 15db lower output than the other. (Matched pair). Beyerdynamic and the shop both said tough luck. So I’ll never buy a Beyer product again. But they do sound great lol.

The MC930 is a great mic when using it for choir recording. But I have four Shure SM81 and they are really very similar and very natural sounding. So I didn´t go for the Beyerdynamics.

Lovely mics when they work. I've got 2 pairs. I love them. Great for most acoustic instruments, and my favourite for recording acoustic guitar. However one of mine sounded faulty, andwas sent to Polar Audio, at the time the main UK repair agent, and has never worked properly since, leaving me very disappointed.

Ivan - That's terrible to hear that you ended up with a faulty mic. I also get that it just leaves a sour taste in your mouth in regards to the piece of gear. I had the same thing with the Manley Reference Cardioid, and I had to wait a few years for those feelings to abate before I reviewed it. Again, that sucks your mic is faulty and I hope that Beyerdynamic can do something to resolve it for you.

@@Markisbeatz355 Go with the AT2020 or the Lewitt. They're built to last and sound good. I recommend you give the 2020 another listen. It's a good mic that's also really versatile. Mac DeMarco used one to record the drums and vocals on his "Salad Days" album.

I have come to realize that I don't do well reviewing headphones, I don't have the standards that the headphone channels have and I don't have the technical know how that they have. They have measuring rigs that cost tens of thousands of dollars and they have golden ears. I'd suggested DMS, The Headphone Show, Crinacle, ElJefe, ThisIsTechToday. They all do a great job with this stuff.

if one want a mic one can sing with well and connect it to a camera preferably wireless or by 3.5 mm jack what mics to look for really? I am thinking of buying an Insta 360 X3 camera but the sound is horrible in that camera,. some people say, get the Rode Wireless Go ll.. but other people that are musicians tell me, Noooo, the sound to sing through Rode Wireless Go ll is useless... ok. fine... but then, what mic shall one connect to such a camera or any camera that use 3.5. mm jacks? I wanna interview people on the street and sing with them or record them play their music and broadcast it live directly with no need to sit at home later to sync things as I wanna broadcast live more often than not.. What mic can do the job? thanks all creatives that been out n' about and tried these things! :)

On cameras I use either a Sennheiser MKE200 or the MKE400. I tried others including Røde but found the Sennheiser mics to be better.

They're too different for either one to be better for anyone and everyone. SE8 has a more clinical and obviously transformerless sound imho, with a strong upper-mid presence bump. The M930's is also transformerless but the highs are sweet enough that it could have fooled me into believing that there's one inside.
