Songwriting laws have changed since the 70s and 80s and what was acceptable then became not acceptable now. Common place then is different than now. But if you really want to go there Quincy Jones himself said Michael Jackson has ripped off of people and not credited them. It’s the arrangement made between the songwriter, producer and singer who gets credited for what. Producers now want to make more money so they ask for songwriting credit. You saying only Beyonce fans say this is being ignorant. Look at Dr Dre he doesn’t write but only produces yet is credited as a songwriter on a lot of the music he’s involved in. Maybe listen to Quest Love Supreme podcast and listen to what Baby Face experienced when trying to work with Michael Jackson. Michael Jackson didn’t always write as much as he said he wrote.

If you breakdown every song though that’s 1 to 3 writers on a song. Does she write every single song by herself, No. However, since Destiny’s Child she has written, co-written, and produced the majority of her songs. For example, she wrote Dangerously In Love 2 by herself but credits the producer Errol as a writer and producer even though he didn’t write any lyrics. Oh and she was only 19 when she wrote that. In 2002, she was the first Black woman to win an ASCAP award for Song Writer of the Year for writing/co-writing songs. Many mainstream artists including Michael Jackson and Taylor Swift (one of the best songwriters of our generation) have been sued for allegedly stealing lyrics or songs. Ed Sheeran was just sued this year(2022) for allegedly stealing lyrics for “Shape of You” but he won the case. My point is recording artists are often sued by unknown artists sometimes rightfully and sometimes they just want money and clout, as Ed mentions in an NPR article. A musicians musical credibility should not be based on if they write every song or play every instrument. It’s nothing wrong with having co-writers, as long as they are being paid. Her having 60+ credits on Lemonade is not a testament to her lack of musicality but her integrity and making sure everyone who inspired her including writers, producers, engineers, etc.. receives their fair share. As a songwriter, here's some food for thought... I've written songs in under 5 minutes and others have taken years to complete, the creative process is unpredictable. Some artists are capable of songwriting but once they become a 'brand' there is no more room for authentic writing, because a lot of the inspiration comes from living a 'normal life'. They can make a choice, let's look at Adele for example, she takes several years out to ensure she can live and ultimately create songs that will truthfully reflect her artistry. This requires her to remove herself from the limelight, probably even rejecting potential contracts/income in order to maintain her privacy and lifestyle. We cannot expect this from every artist, as creatives aren't the same. If they were, then songwriters would consequently lose their income... Remember being a songwriter doesn't equate to wanting fame. There are many great songwriters who you probably won't know because they are out busking or singing in pubs. Ed Sheeran was 'discovered' whilst busking on the streets of London, imagine if he was never heard... Ultimately, all songwriters want is to be adequately credited for their work this could be financially or having their name added to a major artists album credits. If you really want to advocate for us, then look at the law, help us fight the archaic legal structures in place that affect our income. Streaming distributors, copyrights, KZbin (producer/songwriter credits)... Look out for us when you are searching for lyrics, or listening to songs on youtube... Songwriter's just want to be able to afford to use their gifts to keep a roof over their heads, 99% of us actually enjoy the freedom of not being boxed into the industry but rather being able to create freely.

It’s not only about samples, it’s also about interpolations; if Beyoncé says “I get my swag on” she has to credit Soulja Boy because that was written by him first, and each time she mentions a lyric from another artist she goes and adds it to the writing credits because that’s her integrity. Beyoncé is all about details and she is going to make sure each artist that influenced her even unconsciously gets their credit. That’s it, the reality is that 20-23 people were the actual writers and I wouldn’t be bothered because creating bodies of work like Lemonade requires a lot of thinking and talent from several people (I’m super late but I had to write it).

She also did write the entire Survivor album from Destiny’s Child by herself and co-wrote the Writings on the Wall. She wrote all the verses on Formation and Partition. She wrote Dangerously In Love the song all by herself. She wrote the bridge to Irreplaceable, Halo, and Crazy in Love. She never lied about writing. She is a songwriter but in recent albums she has decided to go on a more collaborative way which is fine so long as she credits the writers which she has. She even said Neyo wrote on her album.

It's fine. I think these group efforts are successes in themselves not something that should detract from what has been accomplished. I was going to be on board with Vanity Faire until they said racist, lol. I can explain that in the US and among some artists there's a strong DIY culture. DIY can be extraordinarily impressive, but it's generally difficult to get as good of results with DIY as with a group effort, though it's still not THAT hard. But with something like art one can be sure the product wouldn't be the same.

People need to understand that in hip hop and r & b and sometimes pop working with some producers you agree to give them writing credits even if they didn’t actually write any lyrics or melodies and just produced the beats. It’s become very common practice for producers to get writing credits even if they didn’t write the lyrics. And when you taken into consideration that some of the songs were sampled really each song has 1 to 3 writers at most. A lot of people in the comments here are saying Adele solely wrote 25. That’s not necessarily true. She didn’t produce most of her songs on any of her albums and the producers she worked with didn’t get writing credits, that’s just how whatever contracts/deal she had with the producers worked. Beyoncé has always given writing credit to her producers even if they didn’t write anything. Also Adele still had 1 to 3 writers on each song, most of the albums she had no sole writing credit. And some of you may come for Beyonce for using samples, but at the end of the day most if not all of the samples are used for the sound or instrumentation of the songs which most songwriters have no part in, Adele and Taylor Swift included. The sounds are part of the production and therefore the sampling is too, so if Adele has no part in the production how is she more creative than Beyoncé who is part of the production and uses a sample? Sampling can definitely affect artistic integrity at some point if you don’t use it correctly but it also is a great way to put money in the pockets of other artists or their families that came before you. Would it be better to sample an artist or make a song that’s inspired closely by the artist and slightly change it so you don’t have to offer writing credit legally? Because there are many songs that are similar to other songs where there aren’t any sampling credits but the artist clearly was inspired by.

the death of a singer/songwriter??? Many singers do not ... i repeat DO NOT write their own lyrics. Never have. Tell me how many songs Patti has written, Aretha, Whitney, Brandy, Monica, Rihanna, Janet Jackson, Gladys Knight, Phyllis Hyman, Faith Evans, Mary J. Blije, Toni Braxton. I mean the list goes on... It's a talent when singers write for themselves on every single record, plus Prince taught himself how to play instruments. The man is gifted in his own right. but the only thing singers really did was exactly what they did... Sing. I'm sure nobody is going to scold Whitney,Tina, or Mariah because they didn't write their own songs. Rappers is another story. If you are a rapper, you should be pushing the pen.

Xplicid100...they also never claimed to be songwriters. Why would they Scold Whitney or Mariah. Whitney has only claimed to be what she is a VOCALIST. Mariah literally wrote 15 of her 18 #1s, proven facts. She has written 97% of her songs. I like her music but Beyoncé has lied about writing songs(exNeyo+Keri Hilson,IIWAB), that’s why she is being discredited.
