It's literally all about where you were born and grew up. Black people in the Africa and in the predominantly black Caribbean countries seem to have that strong foundation of being comfortable in their skin and knowing and understanding that they are beautiful. Issue of not liking dark skin tone seems to be more of an issue in countries with predominantly light or pale skinned people. It's sad. But it's all good.

As an Indian woman, I have always hated my skin complexion because it wasn’t pale or even just slightly tanned. I have grown up with colorist relatives and family members who have always made their hatred of any skin complexion that isn’t pale known. I’ve always felt undesirable and ugly because of it - and I say that as someone whose skin tone isn’t even very brown. I can’t imagine what other South Asian women who have darker skin might go through. I have always felt that my worth is less because of the South Asian community. I am so thankful for this song and Beyoncé for making this. Black women are helping me to slowly start to love my melanin, and I wouldn’t ever be able to thank Black women enough for helping me see that maybe I can be beautiful too. Thank you so much, really. You are all beautiful, and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

i am an Indian, and in India if you are a dark skinned women, you are looked down upon and considered ugly. I had always hated my complexion because i was told to by everyone. It was only in the western media that i saw women of my skin colour being called beautiful. Watching and listening to dark skinned girls being confident in their brown skin and embracing their melanin has made me love mine too. Edit: As an Indian, I am ashamed of the recent controversial song, "Beyonce Sharma Jayegi" (Translation: Beyonce will be ashamed *after seeing a fair skinned girl*) because it just shows how racist and colourist INDIAn Media is. but i am so very proud of the indians speaking against it. I had to come back here, because the moment i heard about the title of that colorist song, i was reminded of this song.

Do you know if you're going to Heaven? Are you a sinner? Repent, trust Jesus and God will give you everlasting life. @@mic-game6274 India's caste system is brutal despite its laws banning discrimination against "untouchables", etc. India is extremely colorist and life there made very openly difficult for dark-skinned people; much worse than what we Black Americans face here in the U.S. Although your response is well-meaning and true, consider these things before making such an "easy" comment to an extremely harsh and difficult situation. Very brave for Sia and anyone like her to comment and even more brave for them to decide to love themselves despite a world which hates them based off their skin color. Edit: *** It would be ignorant of me to assume that the originator of this comment section (Sia) is directly from or currently lives in India although that is her ethnicity (assuming East Indian and not Indigenous American). It would be patronizing of me to vote her or anyone like her as some sort of unwilling hero for merely speaking their truths; no human should have to be a hero when it comes to their skin complexion. The legacy of racism, colorism and misogyny are generationally passed down from centuries of oppression. As a Black woman I can relate and just try to offer some compassion sometimes so we don't feel alone. Thanks. ***

I made my daughter watch the gift with me. She kept asking me "mum why are you crying" the sense of freedom in this movie and all the complexities of being a mother raising daughters and sons was so real. Thank you Queen B. Thank you for including us South Asians in here too. You represented brown girls in general and in many of our cultures the more brown you are the more unattractive we have been called. You have touched souls on a whole other level with this movie!!! I thank you for letting me experience it in this life time.

“Same skin that was broken be the same skin taking over”. This is so accurate. Black empowerment is happening and I’m happy that black people are getting the recognition they deserve. P.S. The Gift album is monumental and this video is a masterpiece
